Two kinds of short-term experiments were carried out on sea-water bacterial commun­ities of shrimp aquaculture in Polynesia at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (Tahiti). A 12 m3 sea-water tank was considered. The total number (AOC) and hétérotrophie activity of bacteria were studied during a 48 hours experiment with a 2 hours sampling time The total bacterial community was about 10? bacteria, and nitrifying bacteria were about 10 bacteria ml-1 and could showed doubling time of 7 hours. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. An automated image analysis system designed to assess the activity of benthic organisms is described. This system is used to study filtration in the serpulid polychaete Ditrupa arietina. The video sensor of the system is composed of a black and white charged coupled device, a microprocessor, a memory and an interface board. It is driven by real-time routines, which are downloaded in permanent memory prior to each experiment. These routines control picture acquisition frequency and compute the differences in grey levels between the image recorded at a given time and a reference image (corresponding to no filtration in the case of D. arietina).
