Shopping Centers as Panther Habitat: Inferring Animal Locations from Models Ecology and Society
Maehr, David S; University of Kentucky; dmaehr@uky.edu; Larkin, Jeffery L; ; jllark0@uky.edu; Cox, John J; ; coyote1701@yahoo.com.
A recent model of Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) habitat erred in arbitrarily creating buffers around radio locations collected during daylight hours on the assumption that study animals were only at rest during these times. The buffers generated by this method likely cause an overestimation of the amounts and kinds of habitats that are used by the panther. This, and other errors, could lead to the impression that unfragmented forest cover is unimportant to panther conservation, and could encourage inaccurate characterizations of panther habitat. Previous 24-hour monitoring of activity and activity readings made during routine telemetry flights indicate that high levels of activity occur in the early morning hours. Literature on the behavior of the...

Characterization of biofilm extracts from two marine bacteria ArchiMer
Passerini, Delphine; Fecamp, Florian; Marchand, Laetitia; Kolypczuk, Laetitia; Bonnetot, Sandrine; Sinquin, Corinne; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Hervio Heath, Dominique; Colliec Jouault, Sylvia; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine.
In the marine environment, biofilm formation is an important lifestyle for microorganisms. A biofilm is comprised of cells embedded in an extracellular matrix that holds them close together and keeps the biofilm attached to the colonized surface. This predominant lifestyle and its main regulation pathway, namely quorum-sensing (QS), have been shown to induce specific bioactive metabolites. In this study, we investigated the biofilm formation by two marine bacteria belonging to the Vibrio species to discover potentially innovative bioactive compounds. We proposed a protocol to isolate biofilm extracts, to analyze their biochemical composition, and to compare them to planktonic cell extracts. Cells were grown attached to a plastic surface; extracts were...

Recent studies indicate that ammonia is an important electron donor for the oxidation of fixed nitrogen, both in the marine water column and sediments. This process, known as anammox, has so far only been observed in a large range of temperature habitats. The present study investigated the role of anammox in hydrothermal settings. During three oceanographic expeditions to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, hydrothermal samples were collected from five vent sites, at depths ranging from 750 to 3650m from cold to hot habitats. Evidence for the occurrence of anammox in these particular habitats was demonstrated by concurrent surveys, including the amplification of 16S rRNA gene sequences related to known anammox bacteria, ladderanes lipids analysis and measurement of a...

Experimental study of filtration activity in Ditrupa arietina (Annelida Polychaeta) using an automated image analysis system ArchiMer
Duchene, Jean Claude; Jordana, Esther; Charles, François; Gremare, Antoine; Amouroux, Jean Michel.
An automated image analysis system designed to assess the activity of benthic organisms is described. This system is used to study filtration in the serpulid polychaete Ditrupa arietina. The video sensor of the system is composed of a black and white charged coupled device, a microprocessor, a memory and an interface board. It is driven by real-time routines, which are downloaded in permanent memory prior to each experiment. These routines control picture acquisition frequency and compute the differences in grey levels between the image recorded at a given time and a reference image (corresponding to no filtration in the case of D. arietina). These differences are used to detect numerical objects, which are stored in the memory board. At the end of each...

Circadian behaviour of Tectus (Trochus) niloticus in the southwest Pacific inferred from accelerometry ArchiMer
Jolivet, Aurelie; Chauvaud, Laurent; Thebault, Julien; Robson, Anthony A.; Dumas, Pascal; Amos, George; Lorrain, Anne.
Background : Behaviour and time spent active and inactive are key factors in animal ecology, with important consequences for bioenergetics. For the first time, here, we equipped the gastropod Tectus (= Trochus) niloticus with accelerometers to describe activity rhythms at two sites in the Southwest Pacific with different temperature regimes: New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Results : Based on a 24-hour cycle, T. niloticus activity began at dusk and gradually stopped during the night, before sunrise. This nocturnal behaviour was characterised by short (duration <30 s), low intensity (acceleration < 0.12 ɡ) movements and was probably associated with foraging behaviour. We assumed that activity ceased once the animal was satiated. Our analysis of two size...

Feet, heat and scallops: what is the cost of anthropogenic disturbance in bivalve aquaculture? ArchiMer
Robson, Anthony A.; Halsey, Lewis G.; Chauvaud, Laurent.
The effects of unnatural disturbances on the behaviour and energetics of animals are an important issue for conservation and commercial animal production. Biologging enables estimation of the energy costs of these disturbances, but not specifically the effect these costs have on growth; a key outcome measure for animal farming enterprises. We looked at how natural and anthropogenically induced activity and energy expenditure of king scallops Pecten maximus varies with temperature. These data were then used to model growth time of king scallops reared in an aquaculture facility under different temperatures and anthropogenic disturbance levels. The scallops exhibited a typical total metabolic rate (MR)-temperature curve, with a peak reached at a middling...

First insight into personality traits in Northern pike (Esox lucius) larvae: a basis for behavioural studies of early life stages ArchiMer
Pasquet, Alain; Sebastian, Anthony; Begout, Marie-laure; Ledore, Yannick; Teletchea, Fabrice; Fontaine, Pascal.
Personality traits have been studied for some decades in fish species. Yet, most often, studies focused on juveniles or adults. Thus, very few studies tried to demonstrate that traits could also be found in fish larvae. In this study, we aimed at identifying personality traits in Northern pike (Exos lucius) larvae. Twenty first-feeding larvae aged 21 days post hatch (16.1 +/− 0.4 mm in total length, mean +/− SD) were used to establish personality traits with two tests: a maze and a novel object. These tests are generally used for evaluating the activity and exploration of specimens as well as their activity and boldness, respectively. The same Northern pike twenty larvae were challenged in the two tests. Their performances were measured by their activity,...

The Jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) in the Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park, Santa Cruz, Bolivia Mastozool. neotrop.
Maffei,Leonardo; Noss,Andrew; Fiorello,Christine.
Jaguarundis are felids that inhabit almost all habitat types below 2200 m, but basic aspects of their biology and behaviour are still unknown. This study was carried out using camera traps to register the species' activity pattern in dry Chaco habitats. Jaguarundis were exclusively diurnal with a decline in activity during the warmer hours. Also, photographs showed a coat color ratio of two grey individuals for one orange.

Impact of climate and moonlight on a venomous mammal, the Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus Geoffroy, 1812) Naturalis
Rode-Margono, E.J.; Nekaris, K.A.-I..
Predation pressure, food availability, and activity may be affected by level of moonlight and climatic conditions. While many nocturnal mammals reduce activity at high lunar illumination to avoid predators (lunarphobia), most visually-oriented nocturnal primates and birds increase activity in bright nights (lunarphilia) to improve foraging efficiency. Similarly, weather conditions may influence activity level and foraging ability. We examined the response of Javan slow lorises (Nycticebus javanicus Geoffroy, 1812) to moonlight and temperature. We radio-tracked 12 animals in West Java, Indonesia, over 1.5 years, resulting in over 600 hours direct observations. We collected behavioural and environmental data including lunar illumination, number of human...

Intertidal life: field observations on the clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pires,Tiago H. S; Gibran,Fernando Z.
The clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus shows nocturnal feeding activity, spending most part of the day stationary and adhered to the inferior part of stones. To feed, this species uses the sit-and-wait and particulate feeding tactics. It shows a carnivorous feeding habit mostly consuming small benthic crustaceans. It can move in two ways: (1) "stone-by-stone", sliding its ventral sucker disc across each stone and (2) "surf", when it takes advantage of the energy of the ebbing tide to quickly cross a distance up to four times its body length. Its reproductive season occurs between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, during which time it lays about 2,000 adhesive eggs of 1 mm each in a single layer under stones. It has more than one egg-laying session...

Measuring the Economic Impact of Tourism and Special Events: Lessons from Mississippi AgEcon
Myles, Albert E.; Carter, Rachael.
With the use of this dynamic spreadsheet model, tourism managers can gain valuable insight into tourism and special events. This insight can help them plan future events or evaluate whether the costs of producing these events are justified by the benefits. Visitor spending from outside the county creates direct sales in the local economy. Each dollar of direct sales adds indirect and induced spending in the county. Besides these impacts, visitor spending produces labor income and jobs for residents in the county.

Do broilers prefer to eat from a certain type of feeder? Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Neves,DP; Nääs,IA; Vercellino,R do A; Moura,DJ de.
This study compared three types of feeders for broilers: Fênix, Tube and Automatic feeders. Bird's feeding behavior and preference were considered in this the evaluation. Preference was assessed by examining birds' behavioral activities, such as eating, standing and lying around the equipments, and meal duration as function of the environmental variables. Data on the behavioral activities and meal size were collected in a broiler commercial farm using a portable video camera, and the direct footages were analyzed. The time spent in each activity, feeding bout duration and time spent near the trough were statistically analyzed using the test of means and medians. Pearson's correlation test was used to evaluate the relationship between ambient environmental...

Effects of moonlight on the capturability of frugivorous phyllostomid bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) at different time scales Rev. Bras. Zool.
Mello,Marco A. R.; Kalko,Elisabeth K. V.; Silva,Wesley R..
Some bat species seem to be lunar phobic, i.e., they avoid flying in bright areas or during bright periods of the night; however, the evidence is still controversial. We think that part of this controversy comes from pooling data on bat captures and moonlight intensity according to broad categories, such as moon phases, which conceal the high variability among nights. Therefore, we used detailed, long-term field data on three phyllostomid bat species, in order to test the hypothesis of lunar phobia at two different time scales: 1) among nights, by pooling data of different nights according to moon phases and testing for differences in the distribution of captures; and 2) within a night, by analyzing the relationship between capturability and moonlight...

Ecology of Ischnocnema parva (Anura: Brachycephalidae) at the Atlantic Rainforest of Serra da Concórdia, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Martins,Ana Cristina J. S.; Kiefer,Mara C.; Siqueira,Carla C.; Van Sluys,Monique; Menezes,Vanderlaine A.; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
Ischnocnema (Brachycephalidae) includes many species that are important members of the leaf litter frog communities in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. Ischnocnema parva (Girard, 1853) is endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest biome and is restricted to the forests of southeastern Brazil. Currently, the available information about the ecology of I. parva is scarce. We studied the diet, the habitat use, reproduction and density of I. parva in an area of Atlantic Rainforest at the Concórdia mountain range, Rio de Janeiro. Individuals of I. parva were captured in April 2005 using different sampling methods: time constrained search (transects), plots of 5 x 5 m (25 m²) on the litter, and pitfall traps with drift fences. We found 240 frogs; 35 females and 205...

Population dynamics of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) in the southeast coast of Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miranda,Marcel S.; Fontenelle,José H..
ABSTRACT. The population dynamics of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from Brazil's Southeast (Atlantic Forest) was studied between 2006 and 2009, at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. The study included biometry, weighing, and marking and recapture of adult individuals. The variables obtained from specimens were correlated with the environmental variables of the study period. The survival rate of the adult snail population was 96.7%. Recruitment showed several peaks during the year, and was concentrated between April and August, except in 2009, when there was only one peak in August. Specimen abundance progressively increased from 2006 on, with a trend towards relative...

A time-energy analysis of daytime surface activity in degus, Octodon degus RChHN
Kenagy,G.J.; Vásquez,Rodrigo A.; Nespolo,Roberto F.; Bozinovic,Francisco.
We present an analysis of time and energy allocation in a day-active caviomorph rodent, the degu, Octodon degus, in central Chile. We quantified components of surface activity in the field on a daily basis in individual degus near the time of the summer solstice, when conditions of heat and aridity were also at a seasonal extreme, in order to answer the following questions. Does the absolute time available for surface activity limit performance? Does the allocation of time and energy for locomotion place a functionally significant limitation on overall energy balance and performance? Degus spent about 2/3 of their above-ground time foraging; they remained stationary about 88 % of the time, walked around slowly about 10 %, and were running rapidly from one...
