High-resolution stable-isotope ratio data (delta O-18, delta O-18) were used to study growth strategies of two bivalve species, Pecten jacobaeus (calcitic shell) and Glycymeris pilosa (aragonitic shell) from the North Adriatic Sea. The principal objectives of this study were to identify the period of the year when the growth line is formed in the shell of two target species, to identify the main growing season of these two species, to identify the environmental drivers of shell growth, and to evaluate the potential applicability of delta O-18 and delta O-18 values for the reconstruction of environmental variability. Samples were collected from the North Adriatic Sea by commercial bean trawl (P. jacobaeus, December 2013 and January 2014, N = 4) and SCUBA... |

Clinoforms on modern shelves and slopes, as well as in ancient rock records, are widely recognized as a fundamental building element of continental margin growth. Regardless of their dominant lithology, clinoforms are composed of three geometric elements: topset, foreset and bottomset. Traditionally, much emphasis in the study of clinoforms was put on the geometry of the topset, viewed as the most energetic portion of a clinoform and studied to discern if aggradation was active rather than erosional truncation, and on the foreset, the area with the highest sediment accumulation rates. Here we focus on the factors forcing clinoforms to taper out and on the inferred mechanisms for bottomset creation. We base our analysis on muddy shelf clinoforms, a... |

Two lenses of cold water with core temperature 12.5 degrees C were observed in the central Ionian Sea between the thermocline and the salinity maximum due to Levantine Intermediate Water. The estimated salinity in the lenses is 37.8. The relevance of the observation is assured by the high number of expendable probes deployed. The lens diameters are estimated at 30 km. Analogy with a less spectacular feature contained in oceanographic measurements in the following year implies that the lenses rotate clockwise. The cold water lenses originate from the Adriatic Sea with a generation mechanism equivalent to meddy formation at the Iberian peninsula (eddy of Mediterranean water in the Atlantic Ocean). Year to year differences in cold lens generation are expected... |

The sessile hard bottoms zoobenthos community was studied in three northern Adriatic lagoons (Venice, Caorle and Grado-Marano). On the basis of previous researches (1993-1994 in Venice; 1997 in Grado-Marano), these lagoons had been subdivided into ecological sectors. The time consistency of such a subdivision has been assessed. The largest number of species was found in the lagoon of Venice, showing a high heterogeneity of environments and an intense shipping traffic, coupled with aquaculture activities that favoured the arrival of exotic species. A very poor community of obligate oligohaline species was found in Caorle. The natural and stable environment of Grado-Marano lagoon, with its large area of freshwater influence, hosted an intermediate number of... |

The catch per unit effort of the sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792), on the eastern Adriatic fishing grounds has greatly increased in recent years, notably during the past decade. We compared the relationship between annual mean total length and catch per unit effort (CPUE), as an index of population abundance. Decrease in fish size indicated the occurrence of a strong year class and led to an increase abundance in subsequent years. Long-term variations in catch per unit effort for 1963-1988 in relation to primary production, temperature, salinity and oxygen were analysed, with reference to the sardine, in the principal fishing grounds of the eastern part of the Adriatic. This correlation analysis confirmed the impact of these factors on... |
