This study simulated acidic habitat for different life stages of Clarias gariepinus to know the effect on survival, mortality, morphology and behaviour. The fish were exposed to pHs 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.01 (control) for 35 days. 100% mortality was recorded for all the life stages in pH 3, and 80, 62 and 36% of mortality of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded in pH 4. In pH 5, 30, 26 and 12% mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded and at pH 6 mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults were 12, 10 and 4% respectively. Control pH mortalities were 10, 6 and 2% for fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively. Mortality was due to lack of oxygen uptake, stress and circulatory collapse. All these... |

A key to the Brazilian genera of Ephemerelloidea, nymphs and adults, belonging to the families Coryphoridae, Leptohyphidae and Melanemerellidae is presented. Currently, seven genera of this superfamily are known in Brazil. The Leptohyphidae is the most representative family, with five genera registered from the country, Leptohyphes Eaton, 1882, Leptohyphodes Ulmer, 1920, Traverhyphes Molineri, 2001, Tricorythodes Ulmer, 1920 and Tricorythopsis Traver, 1958. The families Coryphoridae and Melanemerellidae are monotypic, represented by Coryphorus Peters, 1981and Melanemerella Ulmer, 1920. |

Due to the incipient state of knowledge of the caddisflies of Brazil, faunistic inventories are extremely important. An inventory of the Trichoptera fauna of Campos do Jordão State Park (CJSP), São Paulo State, based on adults and larvae, is presented here, as well as comments on its taxonomic composition and the implications this poses for the value of conserving the Araucaria Forest. The samples were taken between August 2005 and February 2007. Larvae were collected with a Surber sampler in several kinds of mesohabitats, in 1st to 4th order streams throughout CJSP. Adults were sampled with light and Malaise traps, and also entomological nets. In all, 40 genera of Trichoptera belonging to 15 families were recorded. The CJSP fauna include 60% of the genera... |

The bacteriological and clinical efficacy and the safety of gatifloxacin for the treatment of non-complicated acute rhinosinusitis was evaluated in 49 adult patients in an open-label multicenter study in Brazil. Patients under age 18, or with associated systemic diseases, were excluded. Diagnosis was based on symptoms, otorhinolaryngological examination, and X-rays of the sinus. At the first visit, all patients were treated with a single daily dose of 400 mg gatifloxacin for 10 days. Middle nasal meatus secretion was collected and sent for culture before and after treatment. Patients were all reevaluated at days 3 to 5; days + 1 to + 5 and 18 to 25 days + 7 to + 14 . Ninety three percent of the patients were considered clinically cured at the end of the... |

Objectives:The aim of this study was to monitor rotavirus (RV) infections in adults >18 years with acute gastroenteritis during 2004–2011 national Brazilian RV surveillance. In addition, to characterize the RV group A (RVA) strains in order to gain insight into the supposed vaccine selective pressure imposed to Brazilian children population. Methods:A total of 2102 convenient fecal specimens were investigated by ELISA, PAGE, and RT-PCR.Results:RV was detected in 203 (9.6%) of 2102 specimens, and showed a marked peak of detection in September. RVA infection was detected in 9.4% (197/2102) and RV group C (RVC) in 0.3% (6/2102). The most frequent genotypes detected in 2004 and 2005 were G9P[8] (38.5%; 5/13) and G1P[8] (54.5%; 6/11), respectively. The... |

Abstract The World Health Organization influenza forecast now includes an influenza B strain from each of the influenza B lineages (B/Yamagata and B/Victoria) for inclusion in seasonal influenza vaccines. Traditional trivalent influenza vaccines include an influenza B strain from one lineage, but because two influenza B lineages frequently co-circulate, the effectiveness of trivalent vaccines may be reduced in seasons of influenza B vaccine-mismatch. Thus, quadrivalent vaccines may potentially reduce the burden of influenza compared with trivalent vaccines. In this Phase III, open-label study, we assessed the immunogenicity and safety of Southern Hemisphere inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (Fluarix™ Tetra) in Brazilian adults (NCT02369341). Cat-scratch disease warrants extensive investigation, from an epidemiological, a diagnostic, but especially a therapeutic point of view. Two suggestive episodes of Bartonella henselae-caused cat-scratch disease are reported, and discussed in the light of the most recent literature evidence. The first case occurred in a 60-year-old man, thus suggesting that it is important to maintain an elevated level of suspicion for this disease in adults as well. Both episodes were characterized by a very prolonged and complicated disease course (with the involvement of three lymph node sets in the first case), a need for lymph-node drainage, and apparently negligible activity of many antimicrobial courses, with a very slow local cure. While specific culture and... |

Studies on the assessment of heart rate variability threshold (HRVT) during walking are scarce. We determined the reliability and validity of HRVT assessment during the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) in healthy subjects. Thirty-one participants aged 57 ± 9 years (17 females) performed 3 ISWTs. During the 1st and 2nd ISWTs, instantaneous heart rate variability was calculated every 30 s and HRVT was measured. Walking velocity at HRVT in these tests (WV-HRVT1 and WV-HRVT2) was registered. During the 3rd ISWT, physiological responses were assessed. The ventilatory equivalents were used to determine ventilatory threshold (VT) and the WV at VT (WV-VT) was recorded. The difference between WV-HRVT1 and WV-HRVT2 was not statistically significant (median and... |

The ileal diverticulum (Meckel's diverticulum) is a congenital outpouching located in the distal ileum which occurs due to the failure of obliteration of the yolk stalk. The peak age in which this anomaly is mostly found is the pediatric age especially below the age of two. Hence it is noted as an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction and fatality in adult life. We present a case of a 26 year old man with abdominal pain and vomiting for 6 days associated fever for 3 days. Emergency laparotomy revealed ileal diverticulitis with small bowel obstruction. Ileal diverculectomy with ileal resection and ileoileal anastamosis was performed. However, the patient developed renal dysfunction leading to Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome and died on the fourth post... |

Macrocephaly has been reported as one of the few physiological markers of several syndromes which are identified during childhood. However, only a limited number of studies have investigated whether macrocephaly persists in adults in these conditions, due to an absence of up-to-date reference charts constructed for typically developing adults. Available adult head circumference reference charts either don't measure individuals beyond 21 years of age, are outdated, mostly use homogeneous samples and most importantly do not account for the individual's height and weight at the same time. Two hundred twenty-one male adults were recruited in a large urban community. For each participant, height, weight and head circumference were measured. A significant... |

Lumbar vertebral dimensions provide vital clinical information of immense diagnostic benefits to medical experts. The present study provides data for lumbar vertebral dimensions of a cohort of specimens of South African females and males. Measurements were obtained from lumbar vertebrae from the osteological collections in the Discipline of Clinical Anatomy, Nelson Mandela School of Medicine using a digital caliper. The antero-posterior body diameter (APD), interpedicular distance (IPD), midsagittal diameter (MSD) and pedicle length (PL) were measured while ratio of MSD to APD was calculated. Results showed gradual increase from L1 to L5 for mean APD and IPD, and a decrease for mean PL from L1 to L5. Mean MSD was observed to present a "U" curve pattern... |

This paper examines women’s and men’s decisions to participate in physical activity and to attain a healthy weight. These outcomes are hypothesized to be related to prices of food, drink and health care services and products, the respondent’s personal characteristics (such as education, reading food labels (signaling a concern for good health), adjusted family income, opportunity cost of time, occupation, marital status, race and ethnicity) and his or her BMI at age 25. These decisions are represented by a trivariate probit model that is fitted to data for adults in the NLSY79 panel with geocodes that have been augmented with local area food, drink and health care prices. Separate analyses are undertaken for men and women due to basic physiological... |

This paper explores socio-demographic, economic and behaviour factors influencing body mass index (BMI) amongst 20 to 64 year old adults in Canada. BMI scores in Canada have increased, with gains stemming from disproportionate increases in female BMI. Econometric results indicate higher BMI scores for males, those born in Canada, those in food insecure homes and whites. Age-gender interactions suggest different patterns of BMI adjustment over the life of males and females; a pronounced inverse quadratic relationship between with age and male BMI is noted, while female BMI increases with age. Education, used as a gauge of inequality, is inversely related to BMI, while income has a muted effect. BMI is inversely related to level of physical activity, an... |

Background: The nutrition transition occurring in many developing countries may invite the misconception that diets are moving entirely away from undernutrition toward problems of excess. But despite the sufficiency of energy in these countries, diet quality is poor and micronutrient deficiencies often remain. In this context, micronutrient deficiencies may actually contribute to the development and severity of diet-related chronic diseases. Objectives: This paper discusses the potential long-term effects of micronutrient malnutrition in early childhood on obesity and related disease outcomes. The links between early micronutrient malnutrition, stunting, and subsequent short adult stature— emerging risk factors for obesity and associated chronic... |

ABSTRACT The objective of our study was to assess the apparent digestibility of plant ingredients in diets for juvenile (50 g) and adult (220 g) Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Dietary dry matter and protein apparent digestibility coefficients of four plant-derived feedstuffs (chickpea, maize, high-quality maize protein, and beans) were tested. The beans diet had the lowest apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter (ADCDM) (69.41%), while no significant differences were detected in ADCDM among the other diets; ADCDM was significantly higher in adults compared with juveniles (77.02 vs. 73.76%). Apparent dry matter digestibility coefficient of ingredients (ADCI) was significantly higher in the chickpea (70.48%) and high-quality protein maize... |
