| The assessment of body composition provides a basis for evaluating changes in adults as they age. If the fat content is shown to be too high, intervention to reduce storage fat is warranted. The purpose of this paper is to report differences in body composition in men and women across three age groups (young, middle aged, older) to describe potential changes in both fat and muscularity. In addition, if fat storage is shown to be located in the visceral area (around the internal organs), then an addition risk to health would be evident. | Entre los meses de julio y septiembre de 1995 se realizaron 15 viajes a bordo de embarcaciones comerciales turísticas que hacen viajes entre Puerto López y la isla de La Plata para estudiar las ballenas jorobada. Un total de 102 ballenas en 45 grupos fueron observados en este período. Los grupos estuvieron formados por 1 a 5 individuos (X=2.26, DS=0.95). En 16 grupos se pudo establecer su composición por clases: 8 estuvieron compuestos solo por adultos (X=2.25, DS=0.82), 4 por adultos y subadultos (X=2.75, DS=0.82), 3 grupos por adultos y crías (2.33, DS= 0.47) y 1 por un subadulto solo. | The age-class distribution of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis in relation to environmental variables in spring and winter, and the growth of both sexes, were studied in the SW Atlantic Coastal System (SACS)(34°S-31° S). Growth was studied from 1449 individuals (n=853, spring (1998 + 2000), n=596, winter (2004)) to which size (TL), sex, and age were determined. Age was determined considering that an opaque plus a hyaline band (present in the transverse section of the sagitta otolith) represented 1 year of life. | El presente estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar el stock de merluza de tres aletas (Micromesistius australis) a través del método hidroacústico, entre las latitudes 47° 00' S y 51° 00' S. Como parte del proyecto, se realizó entre el 2 y el 14 de septiembre de 2004 un crucero de prospección a bordo del B/C Abate Molina, orientado a evaluar mediante un método de evaluación directa (evaluación acústica) su biomasa, abundancia y distribución, junto con estimar la composición de tallas, edad y proporción sexual del stock desovante en el área de estudio. |
