Evaluation of Relationship Between Prevalence of Palmaris Longus Muscle and Handedness in Turkish Population International Journal of Morphology
Karacan,Keziban; Akcaalan,Melike; Baylan,Hüseyin.
Palmaris longus (PL) is a fusiform muscle with a short belly and a long tendon that crosses superficially over flexor retinaculum. It flexes wrist and tenses palmar aponeurosis. The absence of PL prevalence varies from 0.6 % to 63.91 % in the literature. The existence of PL on the right hand is more common compared to the left hand. Thus, we aimed to determine the prevalence of PL in the Turkish population and the relation of PL absence with sex and handedness in this study. We evaluated 1050 students of Sakarya University between ages 18-28 who participated in the study (525 males, 525 females). After completing a questionnaire including handedness, the volunteers were examined on both hands using some standard tests to find out PL absences. Pearson...

Agenesis of the Medial Gastrocnemius and Plantar Muscle: Case Presentation International Journal of Morphology
Álvarez,María Fernanda; Bueno,Camilo Alfonso; Ballesteros,Luis Ernesto.
We present the case of a left medial gastrocnemius and plantar muscle agenesis in a 58-years old male cadaveric specimen from the Anatomy Laboratory at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga-Colombia). These unusual muscle absences and associated functional alterations, enrich anatomical knowledge and become important by the time the affected individual may need a reconstructive procedure.

Study of Frequency of the Palmaris Longus Musclem in Chilean Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton; Ramírez,Daysi; Figueiredo Deana,Naira.
The palmaris longus muscle (PLM) lies on the anterior region of the forearm, it is considered one of the most variable muscles in the human body, and its agenesis is the most frequent anatomic variation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of the PLM tendon in Chilean adults and also, to verify the agenesis symmetry according to sex. For this, we have analyzed the presence of the PLM tendon in 200 Chilean individuals, 114 female and 86 male. In this study, three different tests were used: Schaeffer's Test, Mishra's First Test and Thompson's Test. The obtained data were tabled and analyzed. It could be observed that 91% of the individuals had the PLM muscle tendon in at least one of the forearms and 80% in both forearms. The unilateral...

Agenesis of Palmaris Longus Muscle in Selected Population of School Children in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Adejuwon,Sunday Adeyemi; Salawu,Oyetunde Timothy; Ajibola,Bosede.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of agenesis of palmaris longus muscle tendon among school children in Ogun state, Southwestern Nigeria and also, to verify the symmetry of the agenesis of the muscle in relation to sex. The presence of the palmaris longus muscle tendon was determined in 564 individuals, 285 male and 279 female, with age varying from 2 to 20 years old. Four different tests were used; Schaeffer's test, Thompson's test, Mishra's test 1 and Pushpakumar's "two-finger sign" method. The data obtained were further analyzed statistically and the agenesis of palmaris muscle was found to be 26.7% (unilateral 13.0%; bilateral 13.7%). Prevalence was higher in female (32.3%) than male (21.4%) (P>0.05). Besides, we observed higher...

The Prevalence of Agenesis of Palmaris Longus Muscle amongst Students in Two Lagos-Based Medical Schools International Journal of Morphology
Enye,L. A; Saalu,L. C; Osinubi,A. A.
Palmaris longus (PL) muscle, although of little functional use to the human upper limb, assumes great importance when used as a donor tendon for transfer or transplant. The surgeon's awareness of the incidence in a population is therefore desirable. In the present study, 500 Medical students (242 males and 258 females) of ages 16 to 40 years from both College of Medicine of the University of Lagos, Idi-Araba and Lagos State University College of Medicine, Ikeja were examined for the presence or absence of the PL tendon, using the conventional (Schaffer's) test. The prevalence and pattern of PL agenesis was further analyzed statistically for differences in the prevalence or pattern of PL agenesis with regard to body side or sex. The prevalence of PL...

Facial Biotype and Mandibular Growth Adaptation in Maxillary Lateral Incisors Agenesis International Journal of Morphology
Pinho,Teresa; Carvalho,Patricia; Tallón,Victòria; Manzanares,M Cristina.
To verify the eventual relationship between maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA) and one of the clinically established facial biotypes. The analysis was performed in and between 3 groups: individuals with MLIA, their relatives and a control population defined as "normal" or unaffected. Among these, a comparison between adults and growing individuals was also carried out. The dolicofacial biotype was mainly found in children with bilateral agenesis, while the unilateral agenesis as well as the control population of unaffected children showed mainly a mesofacial pattern. The braquiofacial biotype was prevalent in children without agenesis but (family) related to patients with agenesis. This is the case also for all the adults studied, even if the...
