Human aging and somatic point mutations in mtDNA: a comparative study of generational differences (grandparents and grandchildren) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Marinho,Anderson Nonato do Rosário; Moraes,Milene Raiol de; Santos,Sidney; Santos,Ândrea Ribeiro-dos-.
The accumulation of somatic mutations in mtDNA is correlated with aging. In this work, we sought to identify somatic mutations in the HVS-1 region (D-loop) of mtDNA that might be associated with aging. For this, we compared 31 grandmothers (mean age: 63 ± 2.3 years) and their 62 grandchildren (mean age: 15 ± 4.1 years), the offspring of their daughters. Direct DNA sequencing showed that mutations absent in the grandchildren were detected in a presumably homoplasmic state in three grandmothers and in a heteroplasmic state in an additional 13 grandmothers; no mutations were detected in the remaining 15 grandmothers. However, cloning followed by DNA sequencing in 12 grandmothers confirmed homoplasia in only one of the three mutations previously considered to...

Lack of functional KL-VS polymorphism of the KLOTHO gene in the Korean population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Kim,Hee-Kwon; Jeong,Byung-Hoon.
Abstract The functional variant of the Klotho "KL-VS" stretch, which includes six polymorphisms in linkage disequilibrium, is reportedly associated with healthy aging and longevity in European and American populations. Among Asian populations, this variant has been observed in the Indian population but not in the Iranian population. An association between KL-VS polymorphism and aging has not been reported in Koreans. To investigate whether the KL-VS polymorphism could be associated with healthy aging and longevity in a Korean population, we analyzed genotype and allele frequencies of the KL-VS variant in a large Korean population sample. The KL-VS variant was not found in 874 Korean individuals. Thus, it is not possible to test its association to aging in...

Influence of water on the short and long term mechanical behaviour of polyamide 6 (nylon) fibres and yarns ArchiMer
Humeau, Corentin; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Jacquemin, Frédéric.
Polyamide fibres are known to be sensitive to water, and this has limited their marine applications. However, their low stiffness and high strength could be attractive for shallow water mooring line ropes, particularly for floating wind turbines. Such applications require the influence of water on mechanical behaviour to be fully understood, and this paper presents results describing how water affects static and creep response of polyamide 6 fibre yarns. First, the effect of water on fibre Tg is quantified, then tensile behaviour is examined. Finally, a model based on Schapery’s non-linear creep analysis is identified for different humidity conditions. The results show that while moisture has a small effect on short-term tensile behaviour, long term...

Influence of Finish Treatment on the Durability of Aramid Fibers Aged Under an Alkaline Environment ArchiMer
Derombise, Guillaume; Van Schoors, Laetitia Vouyovitch; Messou, Marie-fleur; Davies, Peter.
Aramid fibers are high-performance materials which have been used in ropes and protective clothing for many years. They are also now being proposed in geo-textiles for ground reinforcement. The influence of the surface finish composition and content has been studied in the field of cables and textiles, but there is no published data concerning the effect of a finish treatment on the hydrolytic degradation. Aramid fibers with different finish contents have been aged in an alkaline environment. The degradation has been identified by FTIR, viscosimetry, TGA, SEM, and tensile tests. For Technora fibers, the presence of finish appears to limit the tensile strength loss of aramid fibers at pH 11 by limiting abrasion, as well as bulk and surface degradation. For...

Prediction of long term strength of adhesively bonded steel/epoxy joints in sea water ArchiMer
Bordes, Melanie; Davies, Peter; Cognard, J. -y.; Sohier, L.; Sauvant-moynot, V.; Galy, J..
This study is concerned with the development of a tool to predict the long term behaviour of adhesively bonded steel joints aged in sea water. First, diffusion kinetics and the mechanisms governing the degradation of mechanical properties of an epoxy adhesive are described. These two sets of data were used in a Coupled finite element (FE) analysis to determine the stress state in double lap shear (DLS) specimens before and after aging. However, subsequent tests on DLS specimens indicated an adhesive and not cohesive failure mode, so this approach could not be used to predict failure in the present case without introducing an interfacial damage parameter. A second approach was therefore employed, in which modified Arcan samples were designed in order to...

Etude du vieillissement de composites verre resine en milieu marin ArchiMer
Gutierrez, J; Lelay, F; Hoarau, P.
Evolution of glass fibre-resin composites (polyester, epoxy and vinylester) after 30 years in a marine environment has been anticipated by the compilation of the Naval Construction Direction test results. This study showed that 120 degree C epoxy prepreg, in spite of improved initial performance, was more affected by water environment aging than other composites. Post-curing of epoxy and vinylester composites does not significantly improve resistance to water degradation except in the case of high temperature aging (60-70 degree C).

Thermoplastic composite cylinders for underwater applications ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Riou, Luc; Mazeas, Florence; Warnier, Philippe.
A study of thermoplastic matrix composites has been performed to investigate their use in underwater applications such as oceanography, submarine, and sub-sea offshore structures. This article first presents six candidate materials. Results from simple mechanical and seawater aging screening tests on flat specimens are then described. Glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy composites are used as reference materials. Two materials emerged from this process, glass/PEI and carbon/PEEK. Cylinders of both were manufactured and subjected to hydrostatic pressure tests, and results are compared to those for glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy cylinders of similar geometry. The carbon/PEEK material appeared most promising. It resisted pressures in excess of 90 MPa and was retained...

Etude du vieillissement de liaisons adhésives en milieu marin pour application offshore ArchiMer
Bordes, Melanie.
This thesis work was performed with a view to offshore applications, and the aim is to improve understanding of the the long term behaviour of adhesive bonding in a marine environment, in order to replace welding by adhesive bonding on offshore platforms. An experimental method has been developed to collect the data required for a numerical model, to predict the life expectancy of adhesively bonded structures. There are several objectives, the first is to understand the mechanisms of failure of adhesively bonded joints and to evaluate the kinetics of their degradation. So, in a first step, the water absorption of bulk adhesives has been studied under different aging conditions, and its influence on the mechanical and physico-chemical properties of the...

Evaluation of Basalt Fibre Composites for Marine Applications ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Verbouwe, W..
Basalt fibres offer potential for use in marine structures, but few data exist to evaluate the influence of seawater immersion on their mechanical behaviour. This paper provides the results from a study in which basalt fibre reinforced epoxy composites were aged in natural seawater at different temperatures. Tests were performed under quasi-static and cyclic loading, first in the as-received state then after saturation in natural seawater. Results are compared to those for an E-glass reinforced composite with the same epoxy matrix. They indicate similar mechanical performance for both materials after seawater saturation.

Evolution des propriétés mécaniques de matériaux composites verre/polyester gelcoates en milieu marin ArchiMer
Castaing, P; Tsouvalis, N; Lemoine, Lionel.
Glass-fiber reinforced polyester composites with gelcoat are widely used in nautical construction despite the lack of knowledge concerning their durability when immersed in water. This study deals especially with the influence of the osmotic process of degradation on the evolution of the mechanical properties of orthotropic materials, subjected to accelerated ageing tests. This evolution is experimentally evaluated by performing a non destructive test procedure, the vibrational modal analysis, whose results are additionally confirmed by quasi-static mechanical tests (bending and shear). Although gelcoat blistering has no effect on the mechanical properties of the structure, considerable changes are observed in the elastic moduli and in the ultimate...

Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...

Alves,Janice Chaim; Wafae,Gabriela Cavallini; Coelho,Daniela de Paula; Wafae,Nader; Coelho,Viviane de Assis; Pereira,Eduardo; Ruiz,Cristiane Regina.
The observation of the stage of ossification of the sagittal suture has been adopted as possible approach of age evaluation in anthropology and legal medicine, as area of cranial pathologies: craniosynostosis and scaphocephaly and as diagnosis resource in tomographies. Regarding it, we found many controversies in the specialized literature, thus we decided to accomplish this research with the following objectives: to examine the ossification of the external surface of the sagittal suture, observing eventual differences due to age, sex and ethnic group. Our material consists of 88 dry craniums of variable ages, both sexes belonging to the ethnic groups: white and black. In that material we observed that: with progression of age, the relation between age and...

Report of the second horse mackerel otolith reading workshop OceanDocs
Age estimation of commercially exploited fish species in the Benguella region. Stocks of the two species of horse mackerel that occur in the Benguela region, namely Cape (Trachurus trachurus capensis) and Cunene horse mackerel (Trachurus trecae) are being exposed to increasing levels of commercial exploitation, highlighting the requirement for effective management measures to ensure their sustainable utilization. Such measures can only be implemented with confidence if they are based on reliable stock assessment procedures. Sizestructured stock assessment models have been found to be unsuitable for Southern African horse mackerel stocks, and the decision has recently been made to move to an age-structured VPA approach. A fundamental requirement for this...

THE IMPACT OF THE YOUNG-OLD AND THE OLD-OLD ON A SMALL RURAL REGION: AN APPLICATION OF THE WISCONSIN ECONOMIC IMPACT MODELING SYSTEM AgEcon
Stallmann, Judith I.; Deller, Steven C.; Shields, Martin.
The literature on the economic and fiscal impacts of in-migrating retirees on rural communities concentrates on the young, newly-retired. An issue not systematically addressed are the impacts on the communities as these retirees age. The Wisconsin Economic Impact Modeling System, a county level conjoined input-output/econometrics simulation model, is used to assess the impact of an aging rural population. Using data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Expenditure Survey, profiles of two household types are constructed and used to simulate the economic impact of an additional 500 elderly households into a small rural economy. Household types vary by age and, as a result, have different income levels and expenditure patterns. As...

Demographic Determinants of Savings: Estimating and Interpreting the Aggregate Association in Asia AgEcon
Schultz, T. Paul.
Life cycle savings is proposed as one explanation for much of the increase in savings and economic growth in Asia. The association between the age composition of a nation’s population and its savings rate, observed within 16 Asian countries from 1952 to 1992, is reestimated here to be less than a quarter the size reported in a seminal study, which assumed lagged savings is exogenous. Specification tests as well as common sense imply, moreover, that lagged savings is likely to be endogenous, and when estimated accordingly there remains no significant dependence of savings on the age composition, measured in several ways. Research should consider lifetime savings as a substitute for children, and model the causes for the decline in fertility which changes...

O ENVELHECIMENTO E AS APOSENTADORIAS NO AMBIENTE RURAL: UM ENFOQUE BIBLIOGRÁFICO AgEcon
Augusto, Helder dos Anjos; Ribeiro, Eduardo Magalhaes.
This article analyzes the effect of the aging and the retirements in the Brazilian rural scene, which is a question of most importance for the current days, since the relative participation of the aging group in the total set of the Brazilian population is increasing. Thus, there exists a concern with the future of the Social Security sot that it must pass through reforms. Hence, the objective of this paper is to raise elements for the discussion on the importance of the social security in the agricultural sector, since it passes through significant demographic changes. With a sufficiently fragmented history, since the years of the Empire, the Social Security has been extending several segments of society, being one of the most important forms of inclusion...

Blood pressure, heart rate and its autonomic modulation in malnourished rats at different ages Biological Sciences
Sant’Helena, Bruna da Rosa Maggi; Brasileiro-Santos, Maria do Socorro; Falcão, Elis Pereira; Duarte, Denia Palmeira Fittipaldi; Pontes Filho, Nicodemos Telles de; Costa, Carlos Peres da.
Malnutrition is responsible for a number of alterations that occur in the organism, including alterations in the cardiovascular system. We hypothesize that long periods of malnutrition occurring after weaning may also be responsible for alterations in the cardiovascular system. Wistar rats were separated into the two following experimental groups: a labina® diet-fed control group (CG) and a malnourished group (MG), fed a multi-deficient diet. Results showed that the mg presented significantly lower body weight (p < 0.001) in rats of all ages, higher heart rate (HR) (p < 0.05) when rats were 3, 4 and 5 months old and lower HR in rats from 6 to 9 months of age, in relation to the CG. Spectral analysis showed a significant increase in the low...

STORING, DISTRIBUTION AND BLENDING OF BIODIESEL CIGR Journal
Micic, Radoslav.
Due to nature of biodiesel fuel (B100) as well as biodiesel and fossil diesel oil blends these fuels demands specific conditions of storage, handling, transportation and distribution. Although it is necessary to pay attention to each of the elements in the distribution chain, the most critical operations are related to storing. Tanks for biodiesel storinghave a dominant influence on the maintenance of stable quality, as may occur, issues that directly affect the degradation in quality and problems during distribution, blending and use. In the designing process of the tank space and the installations must be taken into account all specificities of biodiesel also that materials are resistant to the influence of biodiesel and does not affect it contamination....
