Development of an improved modified Fitch apparatus for application in technologically less developed countries CIGR Journal
nwakaire, joel; Ezeoha, Louis; Ugwuishiwu, Boniface.
This study was conducted to assist in reducing post harvest losses in Africa and contributing to increased technology availability for agro-material testing. Principles considered in design of thermal conductivity probe include the heat transfer methods like conduction and convection. Fitch apparatus was reviewed and found to be deficient on heat transfer through convection and radiation. A modified Fitch apparatus was constructed and tested. It was designed based on radiative-convective-conductive heat transfer using non steady state heat transfer through non-line heat sources. The major components include an electric bulb, the casing, a digital thermometer and a sample hanger. The standard temperature of the system was kept at 81.50C for testing of...

DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW COST AUTOMATIC WATER LEVEL MONITORING SYSTEM CIGR Journal
Okoro, Gideon Onyekachi.
Water is a very necessary and important factor in agricultural and farm production and is a key of our quality of life as well. Monitoring water level of a water source, such as dams, water tank or bore-well etc., plays a key role in agricultural management and development. If a water level drops below the threshold level for pumping in a water body, the pump motor may get damaged due to dry running. In such case monitoring water level becomes necessary task. Water engineers and so many other disciplines that study water, rainfall and so many other things related to water resources especially rivers, seas, lakes are faced with the challenge of acquiring quality and accurate data which is one of the motivations of this research. This work aimed at...

Moisture dependent physical properties of Detarium microcarpum seed CIGR Journal
AVIARA, NDUBISI A.; Onaji, Mary E.; Lawal, Abubakar A..
Physical properties of Detarium microcarpum seed were investigated as a function of moisture content with a view to exploring the possibility of developing its bulk handling and processing equipment. In the moisture range of 8.2%–28.5% (d.b.), the major, intermediate and the minor axes increased from 2.95–3.21 cm, 1.85–2.61 cm, and 0.40–1.21 cm respectively. The arithmetic mean, geometric mean and equivalent sphere effective diameters determined at the same moisture level were significantly different from each other with the arithmetic mean diameter being of the highest value. The seed can be described as an irregularly shaped spherical disc. In the above moisture range, the surface area, one thousand seed weight, particle density and porosity increased...

Spatial Distribution of Rainfall and Reference Evapotranspiration in Southeast Nigeria CIGR Journal
Okechukwu, Michael Emeka.
Spatial trends of rainfall and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) are crucial for sustainable water resources management. Rainfall and ETo trends were evaluated and estimated using FAO Penman-Monteith model and their spatial distributions were mapped across Southeast Nigeria. Two spatial interpolation techniques, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Kriging in ArcGIS were employed for monthly, annual and seasonal rainfall and ETo. Results showed that rainfall increased gradually from North to South while ETo increased from South to North of the study area. ETo was found to be higher during dry seasons as the average rise in temperature within the period of study stood at 1.1%. There was a positive correlation of the predicted results obtained by the IDW...

Energy requirements for drying of sliced agricultural products: A review CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald; Asoegwu, S.N.; Nwaigwe, K.N..
This work presented a review of energy requirement for drying sliced agricultural crops in order to produce high quality and shelf-stable products.  Work on the estimation of energy requirement for drying different sliced crops such as potato, carrot, garlic, onions, mango, banana, apple, tomato etc. and factors affecting their energy requirement were reported.  From the review, programming models for drying sliced fruits, as well as different empirical equations adopted by some researchers for estimating the energy requirements of different sliced crops at specific drying parameters were reported. Obtained results showed that crop functional characteristics, initial and desired moisture contents, slice thickness, air temperatures, specific heat capacity,...
