An information based sample-selection estimation model of agricultural workers' choice between piece-rate and hourly work AgEcon
Golan, Amos; Moretti, Enrico; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
This paper presents a new generalized maximum entropy (GME) approach to estimation of sample-selection models with small data sets, such as are found in many empirical agricultural economic analysis. For small samples, the GME approach produces more stable estimates and has smaller mean square error measures than other well-known estimators such as ordinary least squares, Heckman's two-step method, full-information maximum likelihood, and Ahn and Powell's method. The technique is used to analyze whether hired agricultural workers will work in piece-rate or time-rate jobs and to compare female-male wage differentials for both types of jobs.

There's no such thing as free housing for hired agricultural workers AgEcon
Perloff, Jeffrey M..
One-quarter of hired agricultural workers live in housing that is provided without rent. whereas few workers in other industries are provided with rent-free housing as part of their employment compensation. Workers who live in rent-free housing are paid more than comparable agricultural workers. possibly reflecting the low-quality and isolation of such housing.

Rising Food and Energy Prices: Projections for Labor Markets 2008-18 and Beyond AgEcon
Huffman, Wallace E..
The objective of this paper is to examine how the likely growth in the ethanol industry over the next decade will impact U.S. labor markets, especially migrant crop labor, which is largely immigrant labor. To build the background for making projections for 2008-2010 and beyond, the paper reviews and critiques: (i) the size and composition of the U.S. farm labor market, (ii) the demographics and wage of hired farm workers, (iii) the supply of farm workers, and (iv) the factors affecting the demand for farm labor, including new technologies. The final section provides some projections for agricultural labor markets, taking account not only of likely trends in energy prices but also new technologies that will affect labor demand in the future.

The effects of job site sanitation and living conditions on the health and welfare of agricultural workers AgEcon
Frisvold, George B.; Mines, Richard; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
The lack of field toilets on agricultural job sites increases the probability of gastrointestinal disorders by 60%. Adverse living conditions significantly increase the probability of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and muscular problems. These three health problems do not appear to increase the probability that a worker's family is on welfare or lower workers' earnings. Respiratory problems, however, substantially increase the probability that the worker receives unemployment compensation.

Skills, Partnership and Tenancy in Sri Lanka Rice Farms AgEcon
Desilva, Sanjaya.
This paper examines whether sharecroppers and fixed-rent tenants in the rice farms of South Asia are distinguished by their farming skills. The idea that fixed-rent contracts are typically given to relatively skilled tenants dates back to the agricultural (tenancy) ladder hypothesis of Spillman [1919]. The screening models [e.g. Hallagan 1978] that have attempted to formalize this idea assume that landlords do not observe the tenants’ skill levels. This assumption is restrictive, and has found little support in empirical studies. The principal-agent model proposed in this paper focuses on the differences between time-intensive and skillintensive labor tasks. I show that tenancy contracts are designed to match the provision of these tasks with the owners of...

Agricultural Labor Demand in Chile: A Cointegration Approach Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Saens N,Rodrigo; Lobos A,Germán; Rivera A,Edinson.
International evidence shows that the positive relationship between product and agricultural labor has weakened during the last 30 years, especially in emergent economies. Chilean agriculture has not been left out of this phenomenon The main purpose of this reseach was to estimate the causality relationships that govern the product, employment and salaries in the Chilean silviculture-agricultural-livestock sector, using a cointegration approach. Quarterly data from the 1996-2005 period were employed to estimate agricultural labor demand. A Cobb-Douglas agricultural production function was employed and from it were derived the minimum cost function and the labor demand as bases of this study; the latter was approximated log-linearly to find different...

Farmer strategies to face labor shortages in Chilean agriculture Ciência Rural
Aguirre,Verónica; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Olmedo,Clara; Blanco,Gustavo.
This study analyzes the strategies that farmers in the south of Chile use to face current labor shortages and identify the variables that determine each of these strategies. A multinomial logit model and odds ratios plots with predicted probabilities were applied to a sample of 384 farmers. Interviews and focus groups were applied to specific producers, professionals and public officials. The main results show that only 32.3% of farmers declared that labor shortage is a problem. Of this percentage 52% chose the strategy of paying better, 13.8% chose improve the workers' working conditions, 9.5% chose to mechanize, and 24.1% did not follow a strategy. The production of labor-intensive products (e.g., exportable fruit) determines the strategy of paying...
