Cultivation of Pleurotus sajor-caju on banana stalk and Bahia grass based substrates Horticultura Brasileira
Siqueira,Félix G de; Martos,Emerson T; Silva,Romildo da; Dias,Eustáquio S.
Banana stalks and Bahia grass were utilized as basic starting materials for the production of the mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju. Banana stalks were combined with other waste or supplement products (wheat bran, coast-cross hay, bean straw and cotton textile mill) to obtain different nitrogen concentrations. Since Bahia grass is relatively rich in protein, it was combined with other substrates (banana stalk, coast-cross hay and bean straw) to maintain a substrate nitrogen concentration of about 1.5%. Banana stalks and Bahia grass were both more efficient in the production of the mushroom P. sajor-caju when utilized without the addition of other substrates, with biological efficiencies of 74.4% and 74.12%, respectively. When combined with other substrates or...

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrate levels (40, 50, 60, and 70% on dry matter basis) on intake, digestibility of nutrients, and performance of heifers fed sugarcane bagasse as exclusive roughage. Twenty Girolando heifers, with an average body weight of 198±25.6 kg were assigned to a completely randomized design, established according to body weight. The intake of dry matter (5.12 to 7.73 kg d-1), organic matter (4.72 to 7.32 kg d-1), crude protein (0.71 to 1.05 kg d-1), and digestible organic matter (3.09 to 4.77 kg d-1) linearly increased with the inclusion of concentrate in the diets. The final weight (238 to 299 kg d-1), body weight gain (0.50 to 1.20 kg d-1), and total weight gain (35.2 to 83.6 kg...

Reuse of wastewater from pulp industry for the optimization of fungal xylanase production Biological Sciences
Queiroz-Fernandes, Geisiany Maria de; Martins, Bruna Letícia; Rustiguel, Cynthia Barbosa.
The production of enzymes using agro-industrial waste is a low cost alternative for the reuse of byproducts, with the subsequent impact decrease on the environment. Current analysis produced xylanase using fungus Aspergillus niger, with two types of wastewater generated during the pulp chemical bleaching phase as inducers. Xylanase was produced by submerged liquid fermentation and factorial design optimized parameters that influence production (concentration of wastewater and production period). Initial culture conditions (pH, temperature and agitation) were optimized independently. Alkaline wastewater was more effective than acidic wastewater for the induction of xylanase in optimized conditions: 50% of culture medium, 7-day production, 30°C, pH 6.0 and...

Jabuticaba (Plinia jaboticaba) skin extracts as inhibitors of phospholipases A2 and proteases Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARQUES,TAMARA R.; BRAGA,MARIANA A.; CESAR,PEDRO H.S.; MARCUSSI,SILVANA; CORRÊA,ANGELITA D..
Abstract: The phenolic extracts of jabuticaba skin flour (JSF) were characterized by HPLC, and evaluated for their modulating action upon phospholipases A2 and proteases of snake venom, aiming at their possible use in the treatment of the various diseases associated with the action of venom toxins. Two types of extracts were prepared from JSF: aqueous and methanolic. These extracts, evaluated at different ratios, (venom: extract, m/m), significantly inhibited the phospholipase activity induced by the venom of Bothrops moojeni and Crotalus durissus terrificus, except for Bothrops atrox venom. The greatest hemolysis inhibitory action was observed for the methanolic extract, when incubated with venoms of B. moojeni and C. durissus terrificus, with inhibitions...
