Remotly Sensed Sea Surface Temperature from Aircraft Gayana
Kwon,B. H.; Benech,B.; Durand,P.; Kim,Y. S..
The experiment was conducted around south of the Azores islands, in the middle eastern part of the northern-Atlantic basin. The experimental area was situated between 31°N-38°N and 21°W-28°W. The experiment was performed in order to improve our knowledge of ocean-atmosphere interactions from the local-scale to the meso-scale. The sea surface temperature remotely measured by aircraft was corrected considering the radiation flux divergence. From the descending IR flux in function of the difference between the surface temperatures measured from the ship and the aircraft (SSTshipSSTaircraft), the difference decreases when the IR flux increases. The sea surface temperature was corrected of the radiation flux divergence of the atmosphere between the sea surface...

Comparison of the Sentinel-1B Synthetic Aperture Radar With Airborne Microwave Sensors in an Extra-Tropical Cyclone ArchiMer
Sapp, Joseph W.; Mouche, Alexis; Jelenak, Zorana; Chang, Paul S.; Frasier, Stephen J..
In Winter 2017, the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) was flown on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D Hurricane Hunter aircraft under the direction of scientists from Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) at NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) over the North Atlantic ocean out of Shannon, Ireland. IWRAP is a dual-frequency, conically scanning, profiling Doppler radar initially developed by Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst that is routinely installed on the NOAA WP-3D research aircraft. The flight on February 6, 2017, targeted a region of high winds (greater than 30...

Factors influencing the selection of communal roost sites by the Black Vulture Coragyps atratus (Aves: Cathartidae) in an urban area in Central Amazon Rev. Bras. Zool.
Novaes,Weber G.; Cintra,Renato.
Increasing populations of the Black Vulture, Coragyps atratus (Bechstein, 1793) and the capacity this bird has to live near humans has resulted in vulture-human conflicts. These conflicts increase the need for the effective management of vultures. Improved understanding of communal roosting dynamics is a key aspect of vulture biology that provides information for effective management that can mitigate conflicts. Here we investigated factors influencing roosting site selection by Black Vultures in Manaus. We monitored 40 native vegetation remnants (VR), visiting each VR twice (two independent observers) between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. once every two-three months from June to November 2011. Using maximum-likelihood analysis and information-theoretic...
