Última Geographic variation in skull shape of the water rat Scapteromys tumidus (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae): isolation-by-distance plus environmental and geographic barrier effects? ABSTRACT The geographic variation in skull size and shape of the swamp rat Scapteromys tumidus was examined in samples from eight geographic clusters in almost of its distribution in southern Brazil and Uruguay. For analysis we used two-dimensional geometric morphometric methods for dorsal, ventral and lateral views of the skull. The geometric descriptors showed no significant differences in skull size between geographic clusters, while differences in shape were highly significant. We found a significant and moderate correlation between geographic and morphological distances, corroborating the isolation-by-distance model. Tentativamente, ambas formas son consideradas sinónimos a la espera de una revisión detallada de la diversidad del género. El nuevo género pertenece a la División Akodonde la diversa tribu Akodontini donde, sobre la base de evidencia molecular, resulta hermano de Thaptomys, otro akodontino especialista de selva. There are several kinds of anomalies related to the teeth reported in mammals, and one of them is known as supernumerary teeth and is commonly noticed in the literature, being reported in nearly all orders of mammals. Here, we report the occurrence of supernumerary molars in the sigmodontine rodent Necromys lasiurus, a common and widespread small rodent of tribe Akodontini. In order to assess the patterns of morphometric variation of N. lasiurus in eastern South America, we examined the skulls of 1763 specimens. The supernumerary molars were found in 2 individuals, which represent a frequency of 0.11%. The origin of super­numerary teeth started a long discussion on tooth homology, whether this anomaly is a result of heredity, a mutation or an atavism.... Estos, en orden cronológico de nominación, son: Akodon azarae (Fisch.), A. iniscatus Thos., A. iniscatus collinus Thos., A. neocenus Thos., A. nucus Thos. y St. Leger y A. molinae Contreras. Sus estatus taxonómicos y distribuciones son críticamente revisados. Las incertidumbres respecto del género en el área patagónica son destacadas. Revisando brevemente su registro fósil postulamos que dicha especie sufrió una marcada retracción reciente. Sobre la base de unos pocos individuos colectados pertenecientes a B. chacoensis y B. torresi, describimos algunos rasgos externos como la dotación mamaria compuesta por 2 pares localizados más atrás en el cuerpo, 1 de ellos lateralmente a la genitalia. Combinando morfología con observaciones directas de un individuo en libertad postulamos que Bibimys no es una forma fosorial o semifosorial sino un sigmodontino especializado en la búsqueda activa de alimento empleando mayormente la nariz.
