Short scale (6 h) temporal variation of sinking fluxes of planktonic and terrigeneous lipids at 200 m in the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

Drifting sediment trap measurements were carried out at high temporal frequency in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea in the course of the DYNAPROC 2 campaign, during the transition between late summer to autumn conditions. Molecular biomarkers were analyzed in selected subsets of consecutive samples collected for 6 h at 200 m depth. Fluxes of n-alkanes, long-chain alkenones, sterols and steroid ketones show high variability between consecutive 6-h samples, comparable in range to seasonal variability. n-Alkane export ranges from 1.4 to 29.7 mu g m(-2) d(-1), fluxes of C(37) alkenones varies from 0 to 14.2 mu g m(-2) d(-1). Fluxes of sterols, steroid ketones and C(30) alkane diol respectively range from 31 to 377, 2.2 to 46 and 0.3 to 9.3 mu g m(-2) d(-1)....

Variations of zooplankton in the frontal area of the Alboran sea (Mediterranean sea) in winter 1997 ArchiMer

Zooplankton from the upper 200 m of the Almeria-Oran frontal region, (east of the Alboran sea, western Mediterranean) was sampled during winter 1997, using two nets equipped with 200 and 80 mum mesh. Eight sites representative of the different hydrodynamic structures (Mediterranean water, geostrophic Atlantic jet, associated anticyclonic gyre) were investigated over 2 d, using two day- and two night-samples per site. Zooplankton biomass was correlated to chlorophyll abundance, with lowest values in the oligotrophic Mediterranean water and highest in Atlantic water. Respiration, excretion (NH4 and PO4) and feeding of zooplankton from the upper 200 m of the Almeria-Oran frontal region (western Mediterranean), were studied during winter 1997. Eight sites belonging to the three main hydrodynamic structures of the area (Mediterranean water, geostrophic Atlantic jet and associated anticyclonic gyre) were considered. Lowest values of respiration, PO4 excretion, O/P atomic ratio and particle ingestion were found in Mediterranean waters. At the frontal limit, respiration and ammonium excretion were enhanced compared to the adjacent structures (Mediterranean water and Atlantic jet).
