Contamination of shellfish by paralytic shellfish poisoning ( PSP) toxins poses an economic threat to shellfish farmers. Resource Competition Affects Plankton Community Structure; Evidence from Trait-Based Modeling ArchiMer

Understanding the phenology of phytoplankton species is still a challenge and despite a lot of theoretical work on competition for ressources this process is under-represented in deterministic models. To study the main driver of the species selection, we thus used a trait-based model that keeps phenotypic variability through physiological trait parameterization. We next validate the results by using a key species, the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum. Due to their monitoring, we show that harmful algae are ideal models for studying ecological niches and for contributing to this more global challenge. Sources of paralytic shellfish toxin accumulation variability in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

This study was designed to assess the contribution of feeding behavior to inter-individual variability of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) accumulation in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Phosphorus limitation might promote more toxin content in the marine invader dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum ArchiMer

Alexandrium minutum (strain AM89BM) has been grown in semi-continuous culture (0.2 vol. d super(-1)) in N-limiting (NO sub(3) super(-): PO sub(4) super(3-)=1.6 and 3.16), in P-limiting (N: P=160 and 80), and in N and P balanced (N: P=16) media. The toxin content in cells changed greatly according to the N: P ratio. Cells grown in N: P balanced condition showed an average total paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) content of 1.24 fmol cell super(-1). In N-limiting conditions, cells contained ca. 3 times less toxin with mean values of 0.41-0.45 fmol cell super(-1). Direct and fast detection of Alexandrium minutum algae by using high frequency microbalance ArchiMer

In this paper, a simple detection of a toxic algae, Alexandrium minutum, was developed using highly sensitive quartz crystal microbalance. In terms of performance, compared with other conventional analytical tools, the main interest of our immunosensor is based on a fast and direct detection of these living cells. This system requires the use of one monoclonal antibody directed against the surface antigen of A. minutum. We demonstrate that the whole living and motile algae are caught and detected. The high specificity of the biosensor is also demonstrated by testing several other dinoflagellate species. The frequency shift is correlated to the A. minutum cells concentration. This simple system is potentially promising for environmental monitoring purposes.

This study aimed to (i) characterize Nav sequences in Crassostrea gigas and (ii) investigate a putative relation between Nav and PST-bioaccumulation in oysters. Since 2010, planktonic algae Alexandrium minutum, cause of the PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) syndrome, has been proliferating in early summer in the bay of Daoulas, within the roadstead of Brest. During this internship, a model has been designed in order to derive these blooms from physical parameters (temperature, irradiance, nutrient supply, dilution rate …). In the model, A.minutum competes with 50 other plankton species with randomly attributed optimal temperature and nutrient uptake abilities. It turns out to reproduce well the bloom of 2012, with a correct date of maximum concentration and a relevant order of magnitude. The synthetic pathways responsible for the production of the polyunsaturated fatty acids 22:6n-3 and 20:5n-3 were studied in the Dinophyte Alexandrium minutum. The purpose of this work was to follow the progressive incorporation of an isotopic label (13CO2) into 11 fatty acids to better understand the fatty acid synthesis pathways in A. minutum. The Dinophyte growth was monitored for 54 h using high-frequency sampling. A. minutum presented a growth in two phases. A lag phase was observed during the first 30 h of development and had been associated with the probable temporary encystment of Dinophyte cells. An exponential growth phase was then observed after t30. A. minutum rapidly incorporated 13C into 22:6n-3, which ended up being the most 13C-enriched...
