A compilation of phycological literature published on Bolivian algae is presented together with an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, and needs in this field of investigation. An analysis of the nationality of authors, type, content, and geographic focus of the references shows that literature is largely produced by foreign scientist, concentrated on just a few areas of the country, or are biased toward particular algal groups, leaving ample room for more exploration. The Altiplano (high mountain plateau) and Amazon concentrate most of the publications, the phytoplankton and algae found in sediment cores, being the communities that have received more attention from scientists. Taxonomic references focus more on phytoplankton and tychoplankton communities... |

Nutrient analyses were done in melted ice, frazil and sea water of the upper part of the water column, where as major constitutive elements of micro-algae were analysed. Measurements of nutrient uptake were carried out with frazil algae incubated at -1.5 degree C in a field incubator. Differential-enrichment bioassays and mean N/P ratio (5.9) demonstrated that actual growth of the cultures was nutrient-limited. Nitrogen governed the algal yield when illumination and grazing allowed the microalgae to grow. It concluded that the epontic dynamics is not only controlled from above, by the seasonal (climatic) changes in light intensity as generally assumed, but also from below, by the short-term (hydrodynamic) events of vertical mixing that replenish the... |

Background Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA sequences known as drivers of genome evolution. Their impacts have been widely studied in animals, plants and insects, but little is known about them in microalgae. In a previous study, we compared the genetic polymorphisms between strains of the haptophyte microalga Tisochrysis lutea and suggested the involvement of active autonomous TEs in their genome evolution. Results To identify potentially autonomous TEs, we designed a pipeline named PiRATE (Pipeline to Retrieve and Annotate Transposable Elements, download: https://doi.org/10.17882/51795), and conducted an accurate TE annotation on a new genome assembly of T. lutea. PiRATE is composed of detection, classification and annotation steps. Its... |

Phosphorated nutrition of the red alga Chondrus crispus Stackh. is studied is two morphologically very dissimilar forms of the thallus. Phosphorus measurements, which were monthly carried out at different parts of the alga, showed first that the distribution of this element is not homogeneous along the thallus, and second that seasonal variations occur. It is suggested that the classical polymorphism of the species can be taken into account as concerns its physiology. Besides, from absorption and exsorption experiments which were performed with super(32)P as a tracer, it is shown that the high concentration factor of phosphorus in the alga as compared to the environmental seawater (up to 17.9 x 10 super(4)) can be explained as an effect of metabolic process. |

The commercial culture of Haliotis tuberculata has recently started in Europe. As abalone is herbivorous, the use of local collected algae as feed may appear advantageous. The nutritional value of eight monospecific seaweed diets was studied using Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), filamentous algae, mainly Gracilaria sp. (Rhodophyta), Enteromorpha sp. and Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), together with Saccharina latissima, Saccorhiza polyschides, Laminaria digitata and Laminaria hyperborea (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae) and a mixed macroalgal diet. An integrative approach consisted in monitoring the seasonal composition changes of these algae in terms of protein, lipid, soluble carbohydrate, fatty acid and amino-acid contents, and to relate it to seasonal growth and... |

The research has shown that interspecific and intergeneric hybridization is possible in the Laminariales with variable rates according to the species used; these rates were determined precisely only following preliminary study where the rate of parthenogenetic development was evaluated for each particular species. Besides, the results obtained concerning the ecophysiology of the Laminariales and especially the effect of temperature and light on the fertility of the gametophytes, prompt to undertake experimental cultures of the hybrids in order to obtain algae with qualities superior to those of the parents, particularly regarding alginic acid content and growth. The experiments carried out in 1983 concern together the rearing ashore of isolated... |

Based on Coulter Counter data, a new method is proposed to study the influence of the polymorphous variability in size as well as in shape of the diatom species Skeletonema costatum on the physiological performances of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum . Three conditions are required in order to convert volumetric data determined with the Coulter Counter into metric data, i.e. (1) stability of the pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, (2) statistical independence between length and pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, and (3) negligible level of coincident passages through the aperture orifice. Under these three conditions, the mean length (l) of a S. costatum chain can be related to the mean pervalvar diameter (d) of diatom chains and to the... |

An initial surveillance system of Ostreopsis ovata was set Lip along the Mediterranean coast in the summer of 2007. To Strengthen and adapt this system, we reviewed the information available for a health risk assessment of this monocellular species of algae that produces palytoxin and is increasingly observed in the Mediterranean Sea. Since 2002, this species has been reported to be responsible for many human cases of irritation, Cough, fever and respiratory problems in Europe. It is not Currently possible to determine if palytoxin causes these health effects, which follow aerosol inhalation. Ingestion of contaminated seafood may lead to very serious poisoning, but no such case has yet been described in Europe. A "dose-response' relation cannot be... |

Haptophytes are a diverse monophyletic group with a worldwide distribution, known to be significantly involved in global climate regulation in their role as a carbon sink. Because nitrogen is a major limiting macronutrient for phytoplankton in oceans and for cultures of microalgae, understanding the involvement of nitrogen availability in haptophyte carbon partitioning is of global and biotechnological importance. Here, we made an ecophysiological study coupled with comprehensive large scale proteomic analysis to examine differences of behavior in reaction to nitrogen availability changes between a wild type strain of Tisochrysis lutea (WTc1) and a mutant strain (2Xc1) known to accumulate more storage lipids. Strains were grown in chemostats and studied... |

Background: Studying transcription factors, which are some of the key players in gene expression, is of outstanding interest for the investigation of the evolutionary history of organisms through lineage-specific features. In this study we performed the first genome-wide TF identification and comparison between haptophytes and other algal lineages. Results: For TF identification and classification, we created a comprehensive pipeline using a combination of BLAST, HMMER and InterProScan software. The accuracy evaluation of the pipeline shows its applicability for every alga, plant and cyanobacterium, with very good PPV and sensitivity. This pipeline allowed us to identify and classified the transcription factor complement of the three haptophytes... |
