Alternative liming blends for fish culture Animal Sciences
Nobre, Mikaely Karine Barbosa; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Magalhães, Frederico Batista; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
Calcium carbonate (limestone) is a safe but slow-acting product for aquaculture liming. Calcium oxide (lime) is a fast-acting but dangerous product. It would be interesting to have simultaneously a safe and fast-acting liming product. The present work aimed to evaluate two alternative liming blends for tilapia culture. The culture water was initially acidified with HCl. Next, the same quantity of CaCO3 (control), Na2CO3+CaSO4 or Na2CO3+CaCl2 was applied to the culture water. There were also non-limed tanks. One hundred and twenty Nile tilapia juveniles (1.6 ± 0.1 g) were stocked in twenty 250-L culture tanks for 10 weeks. All products used were similarly efficient in increasing the alkalinity of water. The probable better environment for algal growth in...

The potential of denitrification for the stabilization of activated sludge processes affected by low alkalinity problems BABT
Hoffmann,Heike; Costa,Tatiana Barbosa da; Wolff,Delmira Beatriz; Platzer,Christoph; Costa,Rejane Helena Ribeiro da.
In this study, the problems provoked by nitrification of wastewater with low alkalinity were analyzed in a pilot sequencing batch activated sludge reactor (SBR). Decrease in pH resulted in disappearence of protozoa. De-flocculation of the activated sludge floc started below pH 6.5, resulting in enhanced effluent turbidity and loss of bacteria. Nitrification efficiency was affected below pH 6.2. The denitrification activity was not sufficient to keep up the pH, due to a low C/N ratio of the wastewater. Based on alkalinity and ammonia concentration of the wastewater and the necessary denitrification rate to prevent operational problems, was developed a prognostic diagram. The applicability of this diagram was tested for the SBR with excellent results. The...

EFFECT OF ORGANIC LOAD AND ALKALINITY ON DAIRY WASTEWATER BIOMETHANATION REA
Kispergher,Eduardo M.; D'Aquino,Camila A.; Costa Junior,Luis C. da; Mello,Thiago C. de; Weinschutz,Regina; Mathias,Alvaro L..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of variations in organic load (hydraulic retention times - HRTs: from 2 to 0.5 day) and in alkalinity (NaHCO3 from 4,000 to 1,000 mg.L−1) on methane production. Biomass of sewage sludge was inoculated and stabilized on 1" polypropylene rings. The rings were immersed in the liquid phase (8.41 L) of an upflow anaerobic filter reactor (12.22 L). A solution of 5 g of whole milk powder per liter was used to simulate effluent from the dairy industry. Process effectiveness was measured by chemical oxygen demand reduction, biogas production, and biogas methane content. Biogas production started at a 2-day HRT and synthetic effluent alkalinization with 4,000 mg.L−1 NaHCO3. The best operation condition was at 1-day...

Ocean Circulation Drives the Variability of the Carbon System in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic ArchiMer
Lefèvre, Nathalie; Mejia, Carlos; Khvorostyanov, Dmitry; Beaumont, Laurence; Koffi, Urbain.
The carbon system in the eastern tropical Atlantic remains poorly known. The variability and drivers of the carbon system are assessed using surface dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), alkalinity (TA) and fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) measured in the 12° N–12° S, 12° W–12° E region from 2005 to 2019. A relationship linking DIC to temperature, salinity and year has been determined, with salinity being the strongest predictor. The seasonal variations of DIC, ranging from 80 to 120 mol kg−1, are more important than the year-to-year variability that is less than 50 mol kg−1 over the 2010–2019 period. DIC and TA concentrations are lower in the northern part of the basin where surface waters are fresher and warmer. Carbon supply dominates over biological carbon uptake...

When can ocean acidification impacts be detected from decadal alkalinity measurements? ArchiMer
Carter, B. R.; Frolicher, T. L.; Dunne, J. P.; Rodgers, K. B.; Slater, R. D.; Sarmiento, J. L..
We use a large initial condition suite of simulations (30 runs) with an Earth system model to assess the detectability of biogeochemical impacts of ocean acidification (OA) on the marine alkalinity distribution from decadally repeated hydrographic measurements such as those produced by the Global Ship-Based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP). Detection of these impacts is complicated by alkalinity changes from variability and long-term trends in freshwater and organic matter cycling and ocean circulation. In our ensemble simulation, variability in freshwater cycling generates large changes in alkalinity that obscure the changes of interest and prevent the attribution of observed alkalinity redistribution to OA. These complications from...

Analysis of global surface ocean alkalinity to determine controlling processes ArchiMer
Fry, Claudia H.; Tyrrell, Toby; Hain, Mathis P.; Bates, Nicholas R.; Achterberg, Eric P..
The export of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) from the surface ocean is poorly constrained. A better understanding of the magnitude and spatial distribution of this flux would improve our knowledge of the ocean carbon cycle and marine biogeochemistry. Here, we investigate controls over the spatial distribution of total alkalinity in the surface global ocean and produce a tracer for CaCO3 cycling. We took surface ocean bottle data for total alkalinity from global databases (GLODAP, CARINA, PACIFICA) and subtracted the effects of several processes: evaporation and precipitation, river discharge, and nutrient uptake and remineralization. The remaining variation in alkalinity exhibits a robust and coherent pattern including features of large amplitude and spatial...

First comparison of French and Australian OsHV-1 mu vars by bath exposure ArchiMer
Burge, Colleen A.; Reecez, Kimberly S.; Dhar, Arun K.; Kirkland, Peter; Morga, Benjamin; Degremont, Lionel; Faury, Nicole; Wippel, Bryanda J. T.; Macintyre, Alanna; Friedman, Carolyn S..
Economically devastating mortality events of farmed and wild shellfish due to infectious disease have been reported globally. Currently, one of the most significant disease threats to Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas culture is the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), in particular the emerging OsHV-1 microvariant genotypes. OsHV-1 microvariants (OsHV-1 mu vars) are spreading globally, and concern is high among growers in areas unaffected by OsHV-1. No study to date has compared the relative virulence among variants. We provide the first challenge study comparing survival of naive juvenile Pacific oysters exposed to OsHV-1 mu vars from Australia (AUS mu var) and France (FRA mu var). Oysters challenged with OsHV-1 mu vars had low survival (2.5%a exposed to AUS...

Freshwater parameters in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and their influence on fish distribution and aquaculture Neotropical Ichthyology
Souza,Carine de F.; Pereira Junior,Waterloo; Garcia,Luciano de O.; Santos,Felipe C. dos; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT This study analyzed the relationship between several water quality parameters (pH, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity, iron and manganese) levels measured over a 16 year period with fish distribution and aquaculture in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. The mean pH values were within a neutral range (6.5-7.5), but the maximum and minimum values reached inappropriate levels for fish farming in some cities. Alkalinity levels were very low (except in the southwest region of the state), which may have contributed to pH variation. Hardness, turbidity, iron (except the region near Caçapava do Sul City) and manganese were within safe ranges for fish farming; however, turbidity levels occasionally increased to levels outside the safe range. In...

Factors controlling the total alkalinity in the Arabian Sea and Red Sea OceanDocs
Elageed, Salma.
Based on data obtained during the Geochemical Ocean Section Study (GEOSECS)1977, Mer Rouge (MEROU) 1982, and US Joint Global Ocean Flux (JGOFS)1995 studies we have analyzed the processes controlling the total alkalinity (TA) of the whole water column in the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. The main processes important for the TA variability in area of study are salinity variations, soft tissue production, calcium carbonate formation and dissolution, and sedimentation. For the subsurface waters different processes dominate in the different basins. Regarding spatial variations in surface TA, maximum values occur in the Red Sea and minimum in the upwelling region along the Omani coast in the Arabian Sea. These variations are mainly associated with physical...
