Growing straight versus growing decumbent: soil quality and allometry in Syagrus glaucescens Becc. (Arecaceae), an endemic and threatened palm of the Espinhaço Mountains, Brazil Acta Botanica
Miola,Deise Tatiane Bueno; Fernandes,G. Wilson.
ABSTRACTSyagrus glaucescens is an endemic palm found in the rupestrian grasslands of the Espinhaço Mountains in southeastern Brazil. It is highly associated with quartzitic soils and exhibits strong intra-specific morphological variation in the different areas where it occurs. Allometric traits were used to verify whether there are any significant differences in the morphological traits between populations of this species located in two distinct areas. In the region of the Serra do Cipó individuals exhibit decumbent stems whereas on the Diamantina Plateau stems are straight and perpendicular to the ground. Soil quality was related to plant morphological traits to test the hypothesis that allometric variation is influenced by soil nutritional differences....

Crop Response to Gypsum Application to Subtropical Soils Under No-Till in Brazil: a Systematic Review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tiecher,Tales; Pias,Osmar Henrique de Castro; Bayer,Cimélio; Martins,Amanda Posselt; Denardin,Luiz Gustavo de Oliveira; Anghinoni,Ibanor.
ABSTRACT The use of gypsum to improve the root environment in tropical soils in the southeastern and central-western regions of Brazil is a widespread practice with well-established recommendation criteria. However, only recently gypsum began to be used on subtropical soils in South of Brazil, so available knowledge of its effect on crop yield is incipient and mainly for soils under no-till (NT) systems. Avaiable studies span a wide range of responses, from a substantial increase to a slight reduction in crop yield. Also, the specific conditions leading to a favorable effect of gypsum application on crop yield are yet to be accurately identified. The primary objectives of this study were to examine previously reported results to assess the likelihood of a...

Correction of soil acidity in the subsurface of an oxisol with sandy loam texture under no-tillage Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rossato,Otavio Bagiotto; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto; Silva,Leandro Souza da; Brunetto,Gustavo; Adorna,Jaqueline Cristiane; Girotto,Eduardo; Lorenzi,Cledimar Rogério.
In Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Southern Brazil, aluminum saturation in many areas under no-till system is high and base saturation low in the 0.10-0.20 m layer (subsurface), which may reduce the grain yield of annual crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the occurrence of high aluminum saturation and low base saturation in the subsurface, under a no-till system, represents a restrictive environment for crop production, as well as to evaluate forms of lime incorporation for soil acidity correction in the subsurface. For this purpose, an experiment was carried out with soybean (2005/2006), corn (2006/2007), wheat (2007) and soybean (2007/2008) crops, in a Rhodic Hapludox (USDA, 1999) with sandy loam texture, under no-till for four years in...

Changes in soil acidity and organic carbon in a sandy typic hapludalf after medium-term pig-slurry and deep-litter application Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Brunetto,Gustavo; Comin,Jucinei José; Schmitt,Djalma Eugênio; Guardini,Renato; Mezzari,Célito Pescador; Oliveira,Bruno Salvador; Moraes,Marcel Pires de; Gatiboni,Luciano Colpo; Lovato,Paulo Emilio; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto.
Successive applications of liquid swine waste to the soil can increase the contents of total organic carbon and nutrients and change acidity-related soil chemical properties. However, little information is available on the effects of swine waste application in solid form, as of swine deep-litter. The objective of this study was to evaluate alterations of organic carbon and acidity-related properties of a soil after eight years of pig slurry and deep-litter application. In the eighth year of a field experiment established in Braço do Norte, Santa Catarina (SC) on a sandy Typic Hapludalf samples were taken (layers 0-2.5; 2.5-5; 5-10; 10-15; 15-20 and 20-30 cm) from unfertilized plots and plots with pig slurry or deep-litter applications, providing the simple...
