We investigated the effect of etoricoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, and indomethacin, a non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitor, on experimental periodontitis, and compared their gastrointestinal side effects. A ligature was placed around the second upper left molars of female Wistar rats (160 to 200 g). Animals (6 per group) were treated daily with oral doses of 3 or 9 mg/kg etoricoxib, 5 mg/kg indomethacin, or 0.2 mL saline, starting 5 days after the induction of periodontitis, when bone resorption was detected, until the sacrifice on the 11th day. The weight and survival rate were monitored. Alveolar bone loss (ABL) was measured as the sum of distances between the cusp tips and the alveolar bone. The gastric mucosa was examined... |

This study proposes to measure and compare anthropometric measurements between toothed and toothless maxillas. 26 human skulls were used with: 13 toothed and 13 toothless maxillas. The measurements were made between the distances of the alveolar ridge (AR): the anterior nasal spine (ANS), to the incisive foramen (FI) and the palatine foramen, greater (FPMA) and lower (FPME) on both sides by two evaluators. The data obtained showed that the average of the measurements were correspondingly higher in toothed maxillas than in toothless, for all measurements in any one of the evaluators. The AR-ANS (p = 0.001), IF-AR (p = 0.006), AR-FPMA right (p = 0.001) and AR-FPMA left (p <0.001) and AR-FPME on both sides (p = 0.001) demonstrating significant differences... |

Alveolar bone dehiscences, which were "V" shaped defects related the margin of the alveolar bone, were common findings in different populations and decreased bony support of teeth. It was difficult to detect dehiscence during direct clinical examination. All of the previous studies on the prevalence of dehiscences were based on dry human skulls. In the current article, we evaluated the prevalence of dehiscences occurring naturally in a Chinese subpopulation, and prepared a classification of dehiscences using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The high prevalence rate of dehiscences and different characteristics of each category suggest that it would be helpful for clinicians who perform periodontal surgery, endodontic surgery, implant surgery or... |
