Sequential use of ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources during growth of Geotrichum candidum on a glucose based medium Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Adour,Lydia; Bude,Florence; Amrane,Abdeltif.
Geotrichum candidum growth on ammonium and leucine as nitrogen sources and glucose as a carbon source was examined. A clear preference of G. candidum for ammonium over leucine as a nitrogen source was shown. Indeed, ammonium was completely exhausted at the end of exponential growth after less than 35 hrs of culture; in contrast only 5% of leucine was concomitantly assimilated. Growth continued at slower rates on glucose and leucine as carbon and nitrogen sources respectively, and at the end of culture (185 hrs), leucine was completely exhausted.

IBSS Repository

Improvement of feed intake through supplementation with an attractant mix in European seabass fed plant-protein rich diets ArchiMer
Dias, Jorge; Gomes, Ef; Kaushi, Sj.
The incorporation of an attractant mixture by substitution of an equivalent amount of basal dietary mixture was studied in terms of feed intake and growth performance in European seabass juveniles (mean initial weight : 17 g) fed plant-protein rich diets during 21 days. Three diets had as main protein sources; fish meal, or one of two soy protein concentrates (S and E). To the basal mixture of these last two diets, as well as to a corn-gluten based diet, an attractant amino acid mixture was added at a 2.5% level. Daily feed intake was measured throughout the experimental period. Feed intake and weight gain were highest in seabass fed the fish meal based diet. In those fed the soy protein concentrate diets, the addition of the attractant mixture improved...

A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

Protein sources in feed for farmed fish ArchiMer
Medale, Francoise; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
Fish require diets containing 30 to 55% of crude protein and an amino acid supply precisely adapted to meeting the needs for optimal growth. Fish meal is an ideal protein source for aquafeed because it has a high protein level (65% to 72%) with an ideal proportion of all ten indispensable amino acids that meet the requirements of all fish species. However, finding alternatives to fish meal has become an absolute necessity in order to reduce the reliance of aquaculture on marine ingredients. Animal by-product meals (meat meal, bone meal, blood meal, poultry by-product meal, hydrolysed feather meal) are used as alternative protein sources in aquafeed in extra-European countries. Since the use of animal protein in aquafeed is forbidden in Europe (except non...

The nutritional requirements of the Japanese shrimp Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer
Guillaume, Julien.
Penaeus japonicus is probably the best known species among penaeids or even among shrimps. In juveniles, the protein requirement was best studied and Japanese shrimp appears as the most demanding penaeid species. They may be related to several factors such as energy level of the diet, digestibility or biological value of protein or other nutritional factors. The essential amino acids are well known, however from a quantitative point of view the requirements in each of these amino acids remain to be determined.

Hermin, M; Daumas, R; Drogue, N.
The bacterial activity of the superficial sediment layer was evaluated by incorporation super(14)C-labelled amino-acids mixed an hydrolysate of chlorella cells. Estimation of super(14)C-CO sub(2) super(14)C and super(14)C-A.A. by H.P.L.C. give some informations on the utilization of free dissolved. A.A. and on the transport of labelled compounds from water to sediment. The adsorption mechanism of A.A. on the mineral particles draw to the sediment a larger part of A.A. in the first period; but 28% of this adsorbed A.A. were discharged by an acid treatment. A part of super(14)C-A.A. was incorporated in unhydrolysable organic matter. Di-COOH A.A. are more resistant to bacterial degradation than the other A.A., but arginine is completely metabolized in ten...

Organic matter in sediments in the mangrove areas and adjacent continental margins of Brazil .1. Amino acids and hexosamines ArchiMer
Jennerjahn, Tc; Ittekkot, V.
The nature of sedimentary organic matter from mangroves and the continental margin of eastern Brazil (8 degrees-24 degrees S) has been investigated in order to obtain information on sources and diagenetic processes. The organic matter content of mangrove sediments is three to four times higher than the maximum content of continental margin sediments. Downslope distribution of organic carbon, nitrogen, amino acids and hexosamines shows an enrichment in water depths between 800 m and 1000 m. The distribution of individual amino acids and hexosamines is highly variable in sedimentary organic matter from mangroves and the continental margin, and the observed compositional differences are mainly due to diagenetic alteration. Organic matter is highly reactive in...

Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.

Release of dissolved amino acids by flagellates and ciliates grazing on bacteria ArchiMer
Ferrier-pages, C; Karner, M; Rassoulzadegan, F.
Release of amino acids was examined in the laboratory in the form of dissolved primary amine (DPA) by two marine planktonic protozoa (the oligotrichous ciliate, Strombidium sulcatum and the aplastidic flagellate Pseudobodo sp.) grazing on bacteria. DPA release rates were high (19-25 x 10(-6) and 1.8-2.3 x 10(-6) mu mol DPA cell(-1) h(-1) for flagellates and ciliates, respectively) during the exponential phase, when the ingestion rates were maximum. Release rates were lower during the other growth phases. The release of DPA accounted for 10 % (flagellates) and 16 % (ciliates) of the total nitrogen ingested. Our data suggest that the release of DPA by protozoa could play an important role in supporting bacterial and consequently autotrophic pico- and...

Ounais-guschemann, Nadia.
This study defines rearing parameters for mass products of 30-day old post larvae. Continuous lighting (600 lux) optimizes the predatory activity and suppresses the feeding rhythm. For 4-5 mm larvae (15 days), food ingestion slows down if the prey concentration in the tank is below 5 rotifers/ml, while there is no such threshold for 6-7 mm larvae (22 days). The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis , between 100 and 200 mu m, is an adequate initial prey, it can be replaced by Artemia salina for 7-8 mm larvae (30 days). It is observed that free amino acids and essential fatty acids contents have a prominent role in larvae growth; docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) content could be determined. Finally, the development of the swim bladder is facilitated by the renewal...
