Soil penetration resistance analysis by multivariate and geostatistical methods REA
Medina,Cecilia; Camacho-Tamayo,Jesús H.; Cortés,César A..
The penetration resistance (PR) is a soil attribute that allows identifies areas with restrictions due to compaction, which results in mechanical impedance for root growth and reduced crop yield. The aim of this study was to characterize the PR of an agricultural soil by geostatistical and multivariate analysis. Sampling was done randomly in 90 points up to 0.60 m depth. It was determined spatial distribution models of PR, and defined areas with mechanical impedance for roots growth. The PR showed a random distribution to 0.55 and 0.60 m depth. PR in other depths analyzed showed spatial dependence, with adjustments to exponential and spherical models. The cluster analysis that considered sampling points allowed establishing areas with compaction problem...

Changes in water availability in the soil due to tractor traffic REA
Gómez-Rodríguez,Katherine; Camacho-Tamayo,Jesús H.; Vélez-Sánchez,Javier E..
Frequent traffic of tractors in agricultural soils, promotes soil compaction and affects the flow and water availability. The aim of this research was to study the effect of compaction induced by tractor traffic on water availability in the soil under different traffic intensities on the same path (0, 1, 3, 6 and 10 passages), to two tractors with 3.3 and 2.6 ton of weights, over three different surface conditions. The study was conducted in an Andisol, representative soil of the study area. It was determined the behavior of the water retention curve, obtaining the gravitational water, available water and hygroscopic water, to 10 and 30 cm of depth. The hygroscopic water is the most prevalent with values of up to 80% of the total water present in the...

NITROGEN RUNOFF AND LEACHING LOSSES IN BEEF PRODUCTION SYSTEMS UNDER TWO DIFFERENT STOCKING RATES IN SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Alfaro,Marta; Salaza,Francisco; Iraira,Sergio; Teuber,Nolberto; Ramírez,Luis.
The Lakes Region of Chile produces 60% of the country's milk and 45% of its meat. Production is expected to increase in the near future, yet there are few data on the environmental impact of local livestock systems. A field experiment was carried out during 2004 to measure nitrogen (N) runoff and leaching losses in beef cattle-grazing production systems near Osorno. Grazing was carried out with Holstein-Friesian steers of 220 kg of initial live weight, with stocking rates of 3.5 and 5 steers ha-1. Water samples were collected during 6.5 months with surface lysimeters and ceramic cups, and were analyzed for nitrate and ammonium. Total losses were calculated as the product of N concentration and accumulated drainage at each sampling date. A significant...

BIOSTIMULATION OF AGRICULTURAL BIOBEDS WITH NPK FERTILIZER ON CHLORPYRIFOS DEGRADATION TO AVOID SOIL AND WATER CONTAMINATION J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Tortella,G.R; Rubilar,O; Cea,M; Wulff,C; Martínez,O; Diez,M.C.
Degradation of the insecticide chlorpynfos (160 a.i mg kg-1) using a biomix of a biobed system biostimulated with inorganic fertilizer (NPK) was investigated. Three concentrations of the fertilizer (0.1%, 0.5% and 1.0% ww-1) were evaluated on chlorpynfos degradation, TCP (3, 5, 6-trichloro-2-pyrinidol) accumulation and biological activity of the biomix. The chlorpynfos was dissipated efficiently (>75%) after 40 days of incubation and no additional dissipation was obtained with increasing concentration of NPK after 20 days of incubation. TCP accumulation occuned in all evaluated NPK concentrations and its concentration increased with the increment of NPK addition raising the probability of leaching of this compound. Biological activity (FDA and...

ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAE IN AGRICULTURAL AND FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN CHILE J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Borie,Fernando; Rubio,Rosa; Morales,Alfredo; Curaqueo,Gustavo; Cornejo,Pablo.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association plays a key role in the sustainability of terrestrial plant ecosystems, in particular those presenting limitations for the establishment and subsequent growth of plants. In Chile, more than 50% of arable soils are originated from volcanic ashes, showing in general several constraints to crop production, such as low pH, high exchangeable aluminum content and low levels of available P. Under these conditions, the management of AM fungal propagules using adequate cultural management practices emerges as a successful alternative in order to maximize the positive effects of AM symbiosis on plant growth in these types of soil. This review presents the results of several years of research about the effect of different...

South Chilean forest ecosystems represent one of the largest areas of old-growth temperate rainforests remaining in the Southern hemisphere and have a high ecological value, but suffer from deforestation, invasion by exotic species, fragmentation, and increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. To support sustainable forest management, more knowledge is required on nutrient cycling of these ecosystems. Therefore, a descriptive study of nutrient dynamics was done in four Valdivian rainforests in the lower Andes range of south Chile: old-growth and altered evergreen stands and unmanaged and managed secondary deciduous stands. Time series were measured for (i) mass (four year) and nutrient content (N, K, Ca, and Mg; one year) of litterfall, (ii)...

Effect Of pH, Phosphate and/or Malate on Sulfate Sorption on Andisols R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Pigna,Massimo; Jara,Alejandra A; Mora,María de la Luz; Violante,Antonio.
The sulfate sorption was studied on Andisols with variable mineralogical composition and low organic matter content in presence and absence of phosphate or malate ligands at different pH. Crystalline clay mineralogy was similar for all the studied samples, except for the 2C horizon of the pedon 2, which did not show crystalline minerals. The soil samples showed content of allophane ranging from 16% to 42%. The sulfate adsorption decreased when descending the first 3 horizons (A1, 2A2 and 3Bw1) of the pedon 1. This behavior was attributed to the decreasing organic carbon content. At different pH sulfate sorption was drastically decreased by increasing the pH from 4.0 to 7.0, precisely by 80% for sample 5 to 100% for sample 1. Experiments on the competitive...

Soil humidity and evapotranspiration under three coffee (Coffea arabica L.) planting densities at Naranjal experimental station (Chinchiná, Caldas, Colombia) Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Bermúdez-Florez,Leidy Natalia; Cartagena-Valenzuela,José Régulo; Ramírez-Builes,Víctor Hugo.
Abstract Coffee cultivation depends on water supplied by rain or irrigation, which, in turn, affect productivity and harvest distribution. Knowing the influence of plant spacing on the behavior of soil moisture and water consumption, is likely to determine a crop’s planting density, fertilization and planting times, all based on regional water availability. In this context, the study was conducted at Naranjal Experimental Station, municipality of Chinchiná (Caldas, Colombia) at 04° 58’ N, 75° 39’ W; 1,381 m a.s.l., aimed to describe moisture performance in a coffee plantation established on an Andisol, under three planting densities. This was done by estimating the evapotranspiration (ETo) and assessing crop evapotranspiration (ETc). Soil moisture was...

Temporal and spatial variability of structure dependent properties of a volcanic ash soil under pasture in southern Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Dec,Dorota; Dörner,José; Balocchi,Oscar.
Prairies are a main source for livestock feeding in southern Chile. The aim of this research was to define how grazing events and natural wetting and drying cycles (WD) affect the spatial and temporal variability of the soil’s structural properties. The investigation was conducted in a Duric Hapludand, Valdivia Series. Penetration resistance (PR) and volumetric water content (WC), measured in situ, were used to prepare maps which show i) temporal (1383 to 3047 kPa for 46 to 16% WC) and spatial changes, and ii) grazing events as an important factor influencing spatial changes in PR (differences of 3421 kPa between max and min values). Grazing and WD cycles induced changes in the soil’s mechanical stability and pore functions, which indicate that...

Effect of Nitrogen Inhibitors on Nitrous Oxide Emissions and Pasture Growth After an Autumn Application in Volcanic Soil Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Vistoso,Erika; Alfaro,Marta; Saggar,Surinder; Salazar,Francisco.
A range of technologies is available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems. Among these, applying N transformation inhibitors is promising in reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in both arable and pastoral soils. A randomized complete block design with six replicates was used to quantify the effect of urease (UI) and nitrification (NI) inhibitors on N2O emissions and pasture production from permanent pasture in an Andisol after autumn-applied urea. The N2O emissions were measured periodically for 8 wk with PVC stationary chambers. Mineral N, DM yield, N concentration, and N uptake were analyzed. Our results show that adding fertilizer (40 kg N ha-1) significantly increased N2O emissions by 281% over the control treatment (P <...

Chemical properties of volcanic soil affected by seven-year rotations Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hirzel,Juan; Undurraga,Pablo; González,Jorge.
Long-term crop rotation systems can benefit soil chemical-physical properties and crop productivity. The lack of information on the effect of long-term crop rotations on soil chemical-physical properties for volcanic soils in Chile could restrict reaping real benefits, and make it difficult to take agricultural management decisions, which could lead to possible negative consequences on some soil chemical-physical properties and the environment. The development of information associated with the effect on soil chemical-physical properties with respect to long-term rotation systems and their fertilization management contribute to improving agronomic management decisions for these soils. A study was carried out to assess the effect of six rotation systems...
