Turkey Meat. Seasonal Effect on Meat Quality and on Dead on Arrival Index in a Commercial Plant BABT
Carvalho,Rafael Humberto de; Soares,Adriana Lourenço; Guarnieri,Paulo Donizete; Oba,Alexandre; Ida,Elza Iouko; Shimokomaki,Massami.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of Pale, Soft, Exudative (PSE) meat and to characterize the Dark, Fim, Dry (DFD) meat as well as the Dead on Arrival (DOA) index in a commercial turkey slaughterhouse in southern Brazil during the summer and winter seasons. The journeys (n=64) were over a distance of 36 ± 20 km and took approximately 95 ± 20 min. Color (L*) and pH distribution of turkey breast meat (n=5,352) were evaluated from different farms (n=64) during the 2015-2016 years. The pH, water-holding capacity, color (L*, a*, b*) were used to establish cutoff values for DFD meat (L* < 44.0 and pH > 5.90) and presented correlation among them. The L* value was the highest during the summer (P<0.01), indicating the...

Impacts of labour on interactions between economics and animal welfare in extensive sheep farms AgEcon
Vosough Ahmadi, Bouda; Dwyer, Cathy M.; Erhard, H.W.; Morgan-Davies, Claire; Waterhouse, A.; Milne, Catherine E.; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata; Ringrose, Sian; Goddard, Pete; Phillips, Kate; Stott, Alistair W..
This study quantified interactions between animal welfare and farm profitability in British extensive sheep farming systems. Qualitative welfare assessment methodology was used to assess welfare from the animal's perspective in 20 commercial extensive sheep farms and to estimate labour demand for welfare, based on the assessed welfare scores using data collected from farm inventories. The estimated labour demand was then used as a coefficient in a linear program based model to establish the gross margin maximising farm management strategy for given farm situations, subject to constraints that reflected current resource limitations including labour supply. Regression analysis showed a significant relationship between the qualitative welfare assessment...

Effect of Advocacy Information on Consumer Preferences for Cage Free Eggs: A Neuroeconomic Analysis AgEcon
McFadden, Brandon R.; Lusk, Jayson L.; Crespi, John M.; Cherry, J. Bradley C.; Martin, Laura E.; Bruce, Amanda S..
Understanding how consumers respond to information about animal production systems is important both for animal activist groups and for agricultural producers alike. This is particularly true as information conveyed over platforms such as YouTube both decrease the cost of communication and increase the speed at which interested parties can communicate with the public. The emerging field of neuroeconomics, which integrates the findings of economics, psychology, and neuroscience, can provide unique insights into consumer responses. The purpose of this research is to enhance understanding of consumers’ perceptions of farm animal welfare by capitalizing on recent developments in economics and neuroscience.

Media Advertising and Ballot Initiatives: An Experimental Analysis AgEcon
Allender, William J.; Richards, Timothy J.; Fang, Di; Doyon, Maurice.
Spending on political advertising increases with every election cycle, not only for congressional or presidential candidates, but also for state-level ballot initiatives. There is little research in marketing, however, on the effectiveness of political advertising at this level. In this study, we conduct an experimental analysis of advertisements used during the 2008 campaign to mandate new animal welfare standards in California (Proposition 2). Using subjects' willingness to pay for cage-free eggs as a proxy for their likely voting behavior, we investigate whether advertising provides real information to likely voters, and thus sharpens their existing attitudes toward the issue, or whether advertising can indeed change preferences. We find that...

Is it getting better? Animal welfare aspects in subsidised dairy and pig stables AgEcon
Bergschmidt, Angela; Schrader, Lars.
In Germany, many stables are constructed with subsidies from the Farm Investment Scheme (FIS), a measure of the EU Rural Development Programme. The FIS is considered to be “the most important measure for the promotion of investments into welfare friendly housing systems” by the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. We evaluated the effect of the FIS on animal welfare in dairy and pig farms, applying and adapting an environment based method. Information on animal housing conditions before and after the investments was gathered in a telephone survey carried out in 2007. The farms were selected in a random disproportional sample, stratified according to the federal states. The sample sizes amount to 18 % of the population of assisted...

Labour Management for Profit and Welfare in Extensive Sheep Farming AgEcon
Kirwan, Susanne; Thomson, Kenneth J.; Edwards, Ian E.; Stott, Alistair W..
Sheep welfare is an emerging topic in research and food marketing, and recent studies suggest that farm labour is a key factor for both animal welfare and productivity in extensive sheep farming systems, although little research has been done into labour utilisation in these systems. This paper reports field data collection on two commercial farms and the use of a linear programming (LP) model to link labour economics and animal welfare analysis. The model maximises the number of ewes to clooked after over the lambing period, when constrained by labour availability for various key tasks and by a pre-determined level of sheep welfare. The results show a trade-off between welfare level and labour input per sheep. Dropping tasks with less significant welfare...
