Laboratory animal: biological reagent or living being? BJMBR
Cardoso,C.V.P.; Almeida,A.E.C.C. de.
The duties of humans toward non-human animals and their rights in society have been debated for a long time. However, a discussion on the terminology used for the identification of laboratory animals is usually not considered, although the employment of inadequate terminology may generate disastrous consequences for the animals before, during, and after the experiment. This study intends to defend the use of appropriate terminology, call attention to an unethical attitude of certain professionals when dealing with experimental animals, and also propose operational mechanisms, which allow for those distortions to be corrected.

Animal experimentation and scientific knowledge: a thought style? BJPS
Tréz,Thales de Astrogildo e.
Animal experimentation, besides a research method extensively applied in the production of scientific knowledge, is also considered essential to science and with undeniable historical relevance in advances in human health. In this survey, a questionnaire was applied to a group of researchers involved with research based on non-animal models (n =18), and to another group involved with research based on animal models (n =18). The data analysis was grounded in Ludwik Fleck (1896 -1961) epistemological assumptions. The results suggested that there are at least two thought styles operating in consonance on the same research problem (advances in human health conditions) with significantly different conceptions not only concerning the research practices involved,...

Classification of the coefficient of variation to variables in beef cattle experiments Ciência Rural
Vaz,Marcos André Braz; Pacheco,Paulo Santana; Seidel,Enio Júnior; Ansuj,Angela Pellegrin.
ABSTRACT: This research was conducted to propose a classification of the coefficient of variation (CV%) in many categories of variables of production and carcass of beef cattle experiments. The data was collected from theses and dissertations. We used the methods of classification considering mean and standard deviation, and considering median and pseudo-sigma. The two methods showed similar results so both can be used to classify CV%. We propose only three categories to rank CV%: low, medium and high.

Animal welfare in experimental orthopedic surgery of dogs: an analysis of the Brazilian view Ciência Rural
Sugauara,Rosângela Rumi; Sugauara,Elisângela Yumi; Kazue Otutumi,Luciana; Germano,Ricardo de Melo; Sugauara,Elaine Yae Yamashita; Quessada,Ana Maria.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper was to conduct a bibliometry search about Brazilian scientific publications that describe experimental orthopedic surgeries in dogs. It was analyzed 14 publications, and there was wide variation in the number of experimental animals, showing that there is no consensus on the appropriate number for science experiment with dogs. Most articles had been reviewed by an ethics committee (13/14, 92.85%) and only two articles (2/14; 14.28%) did not report the use of analgesic protocol. Among analgesics, morphine was the most widely used, noted in seven studies (7/14; 42.85%). In six of the articles (6/14; 42.85%), the final destination of animals was not informed, but in four experiments (4/14; 28.57%) the dogs were euthanized. In...

Evaluation of the Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Alveolar Wound Healing in Rats International Journal of Morphology
Yamamoto,Marcos Kazuo; Novelli,Moacyr Domingos; Corrêa,Luciana; de Sousa,Suzana Cantanhede M; Luz,João Gualberto C.
Opinions about the clinical utility of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) vary, as a large number of experimental studies have questioned its efficacy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of PRP on experimental alveolar wound healing in rats. Fifty young adult male Wistar rats were divided in control and PRP groups and submitted to extraction of the right maxillary incisor. In the PRP group, blood was collected by cardiac puncture, and the socket was filled with a PRP gel. Animals were euthanized after 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. Histological and histomorphometric analyses were performed at each experimental time point. Semiquantitative histological analysis showed that the PRP group exhibited significantly more collagen-matrix deposition and less...
