BEHAVIOR OF BROILERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LED LIGHTING AND MICROMETEOROLOGICAL ELEMENTS REA
Rodrigues,Tatiana P. N. da S.; Pandorfi,Héliton; Guiselini,Cristiane; Almeida,Gledson L. P. de; Morrill,Waldirene B. B..
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to analyze the differences between the food behaviors observed under the factors of production environment, sex and lighting system, using stochastic tools of multivariate analysis. As for the thermal characteristics of the environment, air temperature (T, °C), enthalpy (H, kJ kg-1), and black globe temperature and humidity index (BGTHI) showed high positive correlation with each other and strong negative correlation with relative humidity (RH, %). The “male drinking” behavior was positively associated with thermal characteristics of the environment in the three periods of the day, that is, the act of drinking more water would be a way to alleviate thermal stress. Birds subjected to red LED showed a strong...

Nocturnal thermal comfort in facilities for growing swines REA
Sarubbi,Juliana; Rossi,Luiz A.; Moura,Daniella J. de; Oliveira,Rafael A. de; Maia,Ana Paula de A.
In most of Brazilian pig farms, the environmental acclimatization systems run manually. For night and early morning periods, this practice isn't appropriate, because, in general, there are not employees available to run these manual systems. This research aimed to compare the bioclimatic profile of two differently constructed facilities to the external environment, considering the period from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the spring, in order to show that night and early morning temperatures do not coincides with growing pig's thermoneutral zone. For this reason, acclimatization must be also carried out at these periods. It was analyzed the dry bulb temperature, relative air humidity, temperature-humidity index (THI) and enthalpy data of the sheds and external...

MORTALITY, PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF EGGS OF DIFFERENT REARING SYSTEMS REA
Tavares,Bartira de O.; Pereira,Danilo F.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro; Mac-Lean,Priscilla A. Bustos.
ABSTRACT The conventional production of eggs in cage systems is intense and compromises the laying hens welfare. More demanding consumer markets have been pushing to abolish the use of cages and thus provide better welfare in poultry laying. This research evaluated the mortality, production, and egg quality of two alternative production systems (free-range and organic free range free-range) and compared them with the conventional system. The research was carried out in two commercial poultry farms and the variables egg weight, shell egg resistance, Haugh unit, mortality and production were recorded during eight months. The results showed that the conventional system presented better production, lower mortality and better shell egg quality. The alternative...

EFFECT OF TRANSPORTATION DISTANCE ON WEIGHT LOSSES IN PIGS FROM DEHYDRATION REA
Machado,Sivanilza T.; Nääs,Irenilza De A.; Mollo Neto,Mario; Vendrametto,Oduvaldo; Reis,João G. M. Dos.
ABSTRACT: The increasing of global demand for food has required more efficiency in the production process. Transportation represents a source of body dehydration for pigs transported from farm to slaughterhouses. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the distances on the body dehydration of pigs transported to slaughter in tropical conditions. We analyzed 350 pigs shipments with a total of 68,588 heads using statistical software SAS by anova, means and corr procedures. The results showed a liveweight loss estimated at 12% which was increased gradually as the distance increased as pigs were deprived of water for a long time. The most cost-effective distance for the pigs' transportation under tropical condition is within the range below 100 km, where...

COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF LOAD VENTILATION IN BROILER TRANSPORT REA
Pinheiro,Daniel G.; Machado,Nítalo A. F.; Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Silva,Iran J. O. Da.
ABSTRACT The characterization of ventilation during the transport of broiler chickens is essential for identifying and characterizing the potential problems of a convective heat flow and its effects on the welfare and the health and production conditions of the chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ventilation patterns in two layout models of a live transport load: conventional (LC) and alternative (LA) with spacers placed between the chicken transport crates. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests were performed using small scale models. The results showed that the use of spacers between crates (LA model) modified the ventilation patterns and increased the wind circulation between crates. However, wind...

USING SOUNDS PRODUCED BY PIGS TO IDENTIFY THERMONEUTRALITY ZONES FOR THERMAL ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT RATIOS REA
Amaral,Pedro I. S.; Campos,Alessandro T.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Cecchin,Daiane; Leite,Evandro M.; Dias e Silva,Nhayandra C..
ABSTRACT Although dry bulb temperature (T) is the environmental variable most commonly used to classify thermal comfort in pigs, environmental assessment ratios provide more accurate information. The objective of this study was to correlate the sound pressure levels (SPL) produced by piglet vocalization with the thermal environment observed during the nursery phase, and subsequently establish thermoneutrality ranges. The experiment was conducted on a pig farm where T, relative humidity (RH), and SPL data were recorded between 9 am-5 pm for 42 days. The association between SPL and T in nursery phase piglets was verified; for thermal comfort to be possible, SPLs were 56.3 to 60.3 dB. The SPLs were subsequently used in predictor equations of ratios, and...

Logistic regression to estimate the welfare of broiler breeders in relation to environmental and behavioral variables REA
Pereira,Danilo F; Oliveira,Sandra C. de; Penha,Nárima L. J.
The increasing demand of consumer markets for the welfare of birds in poultry house has motivated many scientific researches to monitor and classify the welfare according to the production environment. Given the complexity between the birds and the environment of the aviary, the correct interpretation of the conduct becomes an important way to estimate the welfare of these birds. This study obtained multiple logistic regression models with capacity of estimating the welfare of broiler breeders in relation to the environment of the aviaries and behaviors expressed by the birds. In the experiment, were observed several behaviors expressed by breeders housed in a climatic chamber under controlled temperatures and three different ammonia concentrations from...

Determination of piglets’ rectal temperature and respiratory rate through skin surface temperature under climatic chamber conditions REA
Mostaço,Gustavo M.; Miranda,Késia O. da S; Condotta,Isabella C. F. da S; Salgado,Douglas D’Alessandro.
ABSTRACT In animal farming, an automatic and precise control of environmental conditions needs information from variables derived from the animals themselves, i.e. they act as biosensors. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) are good indicators of thermoregulation in pigs. Since there is a growing concern on animal welfare, the search for alternatives to measure RT has become even more necessary. This research aimed to identify the most adequate body surface areas, on nursery-phase pigs, to take temperature measurements that best represent the correlation of RT and RR. The main experiment was carried out in a climate chamber with five 30-day-old littermate female Landrace x Large White piglets. Temperature conditions inside chamber were varied...

Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Baracho,Marta dos S.; Salgado,Douglas D.; Sonoda,Lilia T.; Carvalho,Victor R. C.; Moura,Daniella J. de; Paz,Ibiara C. L. A..
Brazilian poultry production nowadays occupies important position in world's economy due to its technological advancement, which associated to the development of genetic strains of high growth may cause deviation in the growth rate and harm production. Morphological asymmetry has been pointed as an indicator of welfare, as maintained the pattern that leads to balance, the broiler chicken would have its normal locomotion characteristics, freely reaching water and feed. Thus, the objective of this research was to verify the possibility of using morphological asymmetry for evaluating walking ability of broiler chicken. The research was done in the Technology Center, at UNICAMP. The experiment was made using biomechanics analysis and following, the toes were...

Transport of broilers: load microclimate during Brazilian summer REA
Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Queiroz,Marília L. V.; Brasil,Daniel de F.; Vieira,Frederico M. C.; Silva,Iran J. O..
The objective of this study was to characterize the microclimatic profile of broiler transport trucks under commercial conditions, in the summer, by continuous monitoring of environmental variables (temperature and air relative humidity). Three loads were monitored from farm to slaughterhouse, considering factors such as distance and day periods (morning, afternoon, and night). To obtain the profile of the environmental variables during journey, data loggers, that determined the microclimate to which birds were submitted, were installed in the trucks; data loggers also allowed visualization of the Enthalpy Comfort Index (ECI) so that load regions could be classified according to heat comfort limits for 6-week old poultries. Temperature, relative humidity,...
