SST spatial anisotropic covariances from METOP-AVHRR data ArchiMer
Tandeo, Pierre; Autret, Emmanuelle; Chapron, Bertrand; Fablet, Ronan; Garello, Rene.
The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument on-board the METOP satellite is designed to provide very accurate measurements of Sea Surface Temperature (SST). In this work, using one year of METOP-AVHRR data and a geostatistical approach, we characterize the spatial anisotropy and non-stationarity of the SST variability using oriented ellipsoids. The method is also able to separate the true SST variability from the artificial error introduced by the METOP-AVHRR sensor. These spatial parameters are then used for producing variability atlases (available on-line) over the whole ocean.

Yielding and plastic behaviour of Boom clay ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Cui, Y. -j.; Delage, P..
An underground research laboratory (URL) has been excavated in a deposit of Boom clay at a depth of 223 m by the SCK-CEN Belgian organisation near the city of Mol. This URL is devoted to research into nuclear waste disposal. This paper presents the results of an investigation carried out in the triaxial apparatus on specimens that were trimmed from blocks extracted during excavation sequences in the URL. In order to characterise the mechanical behaviour of the natural Boom clay and to examine the effect of initial and induced anisotropy on its constitutive behaviour, two series of triaxial tests were carried out. Special attention was devoted to the yield behaviour and the effects of stress history. Experimental results showed a clear relation between the...

Monsoon variability and deep oceanic circulation in the western equatorial Pacific over the last climatic cycle: Insights from sedimentary magnetic properties and sortable silt ArchiMer
Kissel, Catherine; Laj, Carlo; Kienast, Markus; Bolliet, Timothe; Holbourn, Ann; Hill, Paul; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Braconnot, Pascale.
Magnetic and grain size properties of a sediment core located in the western equatorial Pacific, off the southeastern tip of the Philippine island of Mindanao, are presented in an effort to reconstruct past changes in the East Asian Monsoon and deep ocean circulation during the last 160 kyrs. The sedimentary concentration of magnetic particles, interpreted to reflect past changes in runoff from Mindanao, varies almost in antiphase with Northern Hemisphere insolation. This suggests that precipitation was lower in the western equatorial Pacific region during boreal insolation maxima and thus corroborates model results showing opposing trends in precipitation between land and the marine realm there. Variations in the grain size distribution of the inorganic...
