Modeling Distribution and Abundance of Antarctic Baleen Whales Using Ships of Opportunity Ecology and Society
Williams, Rob; Sea Mammal Research Unit; rmcw@st-andrews.ac.uk; Hedley, Sharon L.; University of St. Andrews; slc@st-andrews.ac.uk; Hammond, Philip S.; University of St. Andrews; psh2@st-andrews.ac.uk.
Information on animal abundance and distribution is at the cornerstone of many wildlife and conservation strategies. However, these data can be difficult and costly to obtain for cetacean species. The expense of sufficient ship time to conduct design-unbiased line transect surveys may be simply out of reach for researchers in many countries, which nonetheless grapple with problems of conservation of endangered species, by-catch of small cetaceans in commercial fisheries, and progression toward ecosystem-based fisheries management. Recently developed spatial modeling techniques show promise for estimating wildlife abundance using non-randomized surveys, but have yet to receive much field-testing in areas where designed surveys have also been conducted....

Сезонная изменчивость количественного развития фитопланктона у Аргентинских островов (Антарктика). IBSS Repository
Кузьменко, Л. В.; Игнатьев, С. М..

Variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current intensity during the past 500 ka ArchiMer
Mazaud, A.; Michel, Elisabeth; Dewilde, F.; Turon, J. L..
We examine the past variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) by using variations in size and abundance of the magnetic grains deposited by this current at a site east the Kerguelen-Crozet plateau. Core MD00-2375G was taken at a midlatitude site during the ANTAUS cruise conducted in 2000 by the French R/V Marion Dufresne. Marine isotope stages (MIS) down to MIS 13 are identified, and an age model is derived from a correlation to the ice core isotopic record obtained from EPICA in Antarctica. Continuous records of abundance and size of the magnetic grains were obtained using environmental magnetism methods. Results show a strong modulation of the ACC flow intensity in response to glacial and interglacial cycles. The low abundance and the small...

Influence of snow depth and surface flooding on light transmission through Antarctic pack ice ArchiMer
Arndt, Stefanie; Meiners, Klaus M.; Ricker, Robert; Krumpen, Thomas; Katlein, Christian; Nicolaus, Marcel.
Snow on sea ice alters the properties of the underlying ice cover as well as associated physical and biological processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean. The Antarctic snow cover persists during most of the year and contributes significantly to the sea-ice mass due to the widespread surface flooding and related snow-ice formation. Snow also enhances the sea-ice surface reflectivity of incoming shortwave radiation and determines therefore the amount of light being reflected, absorbed, and transmitted to the upper ocean. Here, we present results of a case study of spectral solar radiation measurements under Antarctic pack ice with an instrumented Remotely Operated Vehicle in the Weddell Sea in 2013. In order to identify the key...

Interannual variations in euphausiid life stage distribution in the Dumont d'Urville Sea from 2004 to 2008 ArchiMer
Vallet, Carole; Labat, Jean-philippe; Smith, Martina; Koubbi, Philippe.
Euphausiid larvae were caught by oblique tows of a double-framed bongo net at 118 stations along the coast of Terre Adelie during every summer from 2004-2008. Larvae of Euphausia crystallorophias Holt and Tattersall and Thysanoessa macrura G.O. Sars were observed in the study area every year in contrast to larvae of Euphausia superba which were absent during the entire period of sampling. Highest abundances of both species were observed during the summer of 2005 and the lowest in the summer of 2004. Larvae of E. crystallorophias dominated every year and comprised more than 80% of the total abundance of euphausiid larvae. Within species, the calyptopis stages especially calyptopis 1 of E. crystallorophias dominated compared to furcilia stages of T. macrura...

A preliminary account of the Cambridge expedition which was at work during the summer of 1938 in West Spitsbergen , under the leadership of L. H. McCabe, was given in The Polar Record, No. 16. The object of the expedition was to carry out geomorphological work in continuation of W. V. Lewis's investigations in cirque development in Iceland in 1937. Six weeks were spent in the Campbell Range on the east side of Billefjorden, Klaas Billen Bay. One party then visited the Stubendorff Mountains, and another visited Gips Valley, inland from the Campbell Range. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Can we generate robust species distribution models at the scale of the Southern Ocean? ArchiMer
Fabri-ruiz, Salomé; Danis, Bruno; David, Bruno; Saucède, Thomas.
Aim Species distribution modelling (SDM) represents a valuable alternative to predict species distribution over vast and remote areas of the ocean. We tested whether reliable SDMs can be generated for benthic marine organisms at the scale of the Southern Ocean. We aimed at identifying the main large‐scale factors that determine the distribution of the selected species. The robustness of SDMs was tested with regards to sampling effort, species niche width and biogeography. Location Southern Ocean. Methods The impact of sampling effort was tested using two sets of data: one set with all presence‐only data available until 2005, and a second set using all data available until 2015 including recent records from campaigns carried out during the Census of...

Sedimentation pathways in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during a production regime dominated by regeneration ArchiMer
Cailliau, C; Belviso, S; Goutx, M; Bedo, A; Park, Y; Charriaud, E.
During summer 1994, the production regime at 2 sites located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, one in the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (POOZ) at 52 degrees S, and a second in the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ) at 63 degrees S, was dominated by regeneration (0.3 < f-ratio < 0.4). Two time series, each of about 4 d, were performed over pre-determined time intervals of 4 h using a free-floating sediment trap set at 200 m at the 2 sites. Hourly variations of C, N, chlorophyll a (chl a) and its degradation products, taxon-specific pigments, lipid classes and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured simultaneously. Measurements in the water column were done during the sediment trap drifting. Fucoxanthin, a typical diatom pigment, was the major...

Redescription of Echinomunna horrida Vanhöffen, 1914, a highly derived and rare species from the Antarctic (Crustacea, Isopoda, Munnidae) Naturalis
Brandt, Angelika.
During an expedition with RV Polarstern (1998) a male specimen of Echinomunna horrida was collected in the supranet of an epibenthic sledge in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Due to an incomplete and poor description by Vanhöffen (1914) a redescription is necessary on the basis of the male from the Weddell Sea and the female syntypes from the East Antarctic.
