In an apiary composed of 14 hygienic and 7 non-hygienic colonies of Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 the presence of visible and capped mummies was recorded, one hygienic and 4 non-hygienic colonies showed symptoms of chalkbrood. Twenty-eight days after a massive contamination of the colonies with pollen patties containing Ascosphaera apis Olive & Spiltoir, 1955, the situation was almost identical to that at the beginning: the same 4 non-hygienic colonies still were infected and one hygienic colony that was healthy became infected. The high proportion of hygienic colonies that eliminated the disease symptoms suggests that they could maintain themselves healthy in spite of the presence of colonies with chalkbrood in the apiary. |

Ocorre... |

High quality of bee pollen for commercial purpose is required. In order to attend the consumer with the best identification of the botanical and floral origin of the product, 25 bee pollen batches were investigated using two techniques of pollen grain preparation. The first started to identify pollen loads of different colors in two grams of each well mixed batch, and the second to identify pollen grains in a pool made of all the pollen loads comprised in two grams. The best result was obtained by this last technique, when a pollen grain suspension was dropped on a microscope slide and circa 500 pollen grains were counted per sample. This analysis resulted in the recognition of monofloral and bifloral pollen batches, while the use of the first technique... |

This experiment was carried out to study the internal temperature regulation of a colony of Africanized honey bees (AFR), compared with hybrid Caucasian (CAU), Italian (ITA), and Carniolan (CAR) bees, during the period of one year and different size hives located in a sub-tropical region. The instant internal temperature, 33.7 ± 1.5° C for the AFR, 33.5 ± 1.4° C for the CAU, 33.7 ± 1.5° C for the ITA and 33.8 ± 1.4° C for the CAR, did not show any significant difference (P>0.05). The maximum temperature (36.1 ± 2.3° C) was statistically different (P<0.05) from the minimum (27.6 ± 5.3° C). There was no difference (P>0.05) in the mean internal temperature, between the nucleus (31.7 ± 6.3° C) and the brood nest (32.1 ± 5.3° C) measured... |
