| Os tunicados da classe Appendicularia são organismos pelágicos, exclusivamente marinhos, caracterizados pela ausência da cavidade branquial e da cloaca, bem como pela retenção de notocorda e cauda muscular no estágio adulto. O corpo, delicado e transparente, é formado pelo tronco que raramente excede os 5 mm e pela cauda, várias vezes mais longa que o tronco. São hermafroditas protândricos, exceção feita à espécie Oikopleura dioica, que na época da reprodução lançam os gametas na água onde ocorre a fecundação. Os apendiculários se alimentam basicamente de pico-nanoplâncton, bem como de pequenas diatomáceas, vírus, bactérias e material coloidal. | A new appendicularian, Oikopleura gorskyi n. sp., recovered from numerous plankton samples taken at depths between 1200 and 400 m in Sognefjorden, western Norway, as well as in more shallow water in this and other western Norwegian fjords, is described. The species is easily identified by the limited extension of its oikoblastic epithelium, the small size of its right stomach lobe and the disposition of its subchordal cells in two segments of an antero-posterior line with some 13 and 8 plateshaped cells respectively. The unique pattern of its house rudiment inclusion body and the unique cell nuclear pattern in its oikoblastic epithelium are additional, although less easily observable, characters of this species. |

| This work provides a first taxonomic description of appendicularians collected during September and August of 1995 in the north coast of Chile (18º23'-31º00' S). Fifteen species were identified. They belong to the families Oikopleuridae (Oikopleura longicauda, O. cophocerca, O. dioica, O. rufescens, O. fusiformis, O. albicans, O. gracilis and Megalocercus abyssorum), and Fritillariidae (Fritillaria pellucida typica, F. pellucida omani, F. haplostoma F. tenella, F. formica digitata, F. venusta and F. fraudax). All the species are first records for waters of northern Chile, thus broadening their previous distribution in the southeast Pacific.
