Coupled Fe and S isotope variations in pyrite nodules from Archean shale ArchiMer
Marin-carbonne, Johanna; Rollion-bard, Claire; Bekker, Andrey; Rouxel, Olivier; Agangi, Andrea; Cavalazzi, Barbara; Wohlgemuth-ueberwasser, Cora C.; Hofmann, Axel; Mckeegan, Kevin D..
Iron and sulfur isotope compositions recorded in ancient rocks and minerals such as pyrite (FeS2) have been widely used as a proxy for early microbial metabolisms and redox evolution of the oceans. However, most previous studies focused on only one of these isotopic systems. Herein, we illustrate the importance of in-situ and coupled study of Fe and S isotopes on two pyrite nodules in a c. 2.7 Ga shale from the Bubi Greenstone Belt (Zimbabwe). Fe and S isotope compositions were measured both by bulk-sample mass spectrometry techniques and by ion microprobe in-situ methods (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, SIMS). Spatially-resolved analysis across the nodules shows a large range of variations at micrometer-scale for both Fe and S isotope compositions, with...

Comparing orthomagmatic and hydrothermal mineralization models for komatiite-hosted nickel deposits in Zimbabwe using multiple-sulfur, iron, and nickel isotope data ArchiMer
Hofmann, Axel; Bekker, Andrey; Dirks, Paul; Gueguen, Bleuenn; Rumble, Doug; Rouxel, Olivier.
Trojan and Shangani mines are low-grade (<0.8 % Ni), komatiite-hosted nickel sulfide deposits associated with ca. 2.7 Ga volcano-sedimentary sequences of the Zimbabwe craton. At both mines, nickel sulfide mineralization is present in strongly deformed serpentinite bodies that are enveloped by a complex network of highly sheared, silicified, and sulfide-bearing metasedimentary rocks. Strong, polyphase structural–metamorphic–metasomatic overprints in both the Trojan and Shangani deposits make it difficult to ascertain if sulfide mineralization was derived from orthomagmatic or hydrothermal processes, or by a combination of both. Multiple S, Fe, and Ni isotope analyses were applied to test these competing models. Massive ores at Shangani Mine show...

U-Pb evidence for late Neoarchean crustal reworking in the Southern São Francisco Craton (Minas Gerais, Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Campos,José C.S.; Carneiro,Maurício A.; Basei,Miguel A.S..
The Passa Tempo Metamorphic Complex is one of several metamorphic complexes that form the Archean sialic crust of the southern São Francisco Craton. It encompasses hypersthene-bearing gneissic rocks, with subordinateNW- or EW-trending mafic-ultramafic bodies and granodioritic to alkali-granitic, weakly foliated, and light-colored granitoids. These granitoids are the product of generalized migmatization that followed granulite-facies metamorphism. To determine the ages of the granulite-facies metamorphism and granitoid genesis, we obtained U-Pb ages on zircon extracted from the mesosome and leucosome of the migmatitic gneisses. For the mesosome, a discordia that intercepts Concordia at 2622 ± 18 Ma is interpreted as a minimum age for granulite-facies...

Campo Belo Metamorphic Complex: tectonic evolution of an Archean sialic crust of the southern São Francisco Craton in Minas Gerais (Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,ARILDO H.; CARNEIRO,MAURÍCIO A..
Systematic geological studies performed in the study area allowed the characterization of six lithodemic units: three gneissic, one amphibolitic, one supracrustal and one fissure mafic. The mineral assemblage and the structural record of these lithodemic units indicate that the study area was affected by five tectonothermal events. The structural pattern of the first and oldest event occurred under granulite facies conditions and reveals essentially a sinistral kinematic pattern. The second event, showing dominant extensional characteristics, is related to the generation of an ensialic basin filled by the volcano-sedimentary sequence of the supracrustal lithodemic unit. The third event, which is the most expressive in the study region, is characterized by...

Carbon isotope fluctuations in Precambrian carbonate sequences of several localities in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
SIAL,ALCIDES N.; FERREIRA,VALDEREZ P.; DEALMEIDA,AFONSO R.; ROMANO,ANTONIO W.; PARENTE,CLOVIS V.; DACOSTA,MARCONDES L.; SANTOS,VICTOR H..
Carbon isotope fluctuations in Precambrian sedimentary carbonates between 2.8 Ga and 0.60 Ga in Brazil are examined in this study. The carbonate facies of the BIF of the 2.8 Ga-old Carajás Formation, state of Pará in northern Brazil, has rather homogeneous delta13C (-5 o/ooPDB), compatible with carbonatization of a silicate protolith by a CO2-rich fluid from mantle degassing. The Paleoproterozoic Gandarela Formation, state of Minas Gerais, displays a narrow delta13C variation (-1.5 to +0.5 o/oo) compatible with carbon isotope signatures of carbonates deposited around 2.4 Ga worldwide. The Fecho do Funil Formation has probably recorded the Lomagundi delta13C positive anomaly (+6.4 to +7.1 o/ooPDB). The magnesite-bearing carbonates of the Orós mobile belt,...

Breves Notícias Sobre a Geologia dos Estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina BABT
Maack,Reinhard.
The present short survey of the geology of the States of Paraná and Santa Catarina was written as a text to accompany sketches for the revision of the GEOLOGICAL MAP OF SOUTH AMERICA. It contains the results of geologic research up to the year 1947 in most concise form, without going into detail. As requested, the occurrence of useful minerals was not considered in the summary, and the list of bibliographical references has been condensed to the uttermost. Inasmuch as the author treated the Passa Dois Series in more detail, due to the reorganization of the Gondwana beds, the Archean and the Algonkian had to be reduced to the minimum. This was possible, since the innumerable details of the phenomena in the crystalline complex could not be represented in a...
