Macrofaunal samples were collected regularly during springtime from 1978 to 1994 in the subtidal zone off Norderney, one of the East Frisian barrier islands. Sampling was carried out from a research vessel by means of a 0.2 m(2) van-Veen grab at five sites with water depths of 10-20 m. Abundances, biomasses and species composition were analysed by cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. The resulting patterns are discussed in terms of anthropogenic impact and varying meteorological conditions. Species survival is severely impaired by cold winters, whereas storms and hot summers have a minor impact. There is evidence that mild meteorological conditions and eutrophication have resulted in an increase in total biomass since 1989. In addition to... |

We reviewed the literature concerning fish aggregation devices (FADs) to determine areas of relative research deficiency. Using specific searches of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts ( ASFA) database from 1978 to December 2003 and a classical search of the pre-1978 literature, we collected 407 references on FADs. Publications before 1980 were predominantly peer-reviewed, although non-peer reviewed literature has dominated since 1980, due to the numerous technical reports produced as FADs became more widely used in artisinal and large-scale industrial. sheries in the 1980s. Most studies of the ecology of FAD-associated fish were descriptive, with few mensurative experimental studies and even fewer manipulative experimental studies that tested... |

This study was carried out among 144 individuals (18 years) from the Yoruba tribe of Southwestern Nigeria in order to determine the association between tongue rolling and folding. Participants were examined for the ability to roll and/or fold their tongues. The incidence of tongue rollers and folders were 59.7 % and 79.2 % respectively. Tongue rolling was higher in females than male but the difference was not significant (X2= 1.039, df = 1, p= 0.308). Tongue folding was significantly higher in females than males (X2= 4.211, df= 1, p= 0.04). Of the 144 participants, 76 (52.8 %) were tongue rollers and folders, 10 (6.9 %) were rollers and non-folders, 38 (26.4 %) were non-rollers and folders and 20 (13.9 %) were non-rollers and non-folders. These classes did... |

The Simian and Sydney creases are variant palmar creases which have now drawn medical attention as their presence correlates strongly with numerous chromosomal anomalies and diseases. Works on these creases have been done on several human communities, racial and ethnic but no specific study is focussed out on the Indian populations. In this study 1000 Central Indian subjects (500 males and 500 females) aged between 5 to 70 years were randomly selected and examined by the authors. We found the prevalence of Simian, Sydney and Suwon creases in studied population of Central India is 14.4%, 3.6% and 2.4% respectively, which is a little higher than the figures for Asians and Caucasians claimed by earlier studies. There is no any association between these... |

Soccer players are usually selected based on their anthropometry characteristics rather than their performances. Therefore, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between morphological and match performances among junior soccer players. Thirty seven junior soccer players were randomly selected using as stratification criteria age and playing role. Skinfolds (mm) were measured at six sites: triceps skinfold thickness, subscapular skinfold thickness, thigh skinfold thickness, calf skinfold thickness, supraspinal skinfold thickness and abdominal skinfold thickness. In addition, total distance covered during the match, as well as the distance traveled by walking, jogging, moderate and high intensity running and sprinting was... |

A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data... |

A new species of coral inhabiting barnacle Cantellius cardenae spec. nov. (Crustacea, Cirripedia: Pyrgomatinae) is described. This barnacle was found on the staghorn coral Acropora (Isopora) brueggemanni (Scleractinia: Acroporidae). It is characterized by having transversally elongated scuta and narrow terga with a spur length more than half of the total tergal length. This species belongs to the secundus group of Cantellius, which includes barnacles with transversally elongated scuta, and which are limited to the Acroporidae. The distribution of C. cardenae supports the hypothesis that structurally specialized pyrgomatines occupy a more limited variety of hosts than do morphologicaly generalized ones. |

The objective of this work is to verify the interest, among the farmers from the fruit and vegetable production units of the 4th Colony micro region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in participating in associations or cooperatives, which would allow them to participate in the increasingly competitive markets. A structured questionnaire, built in Likert scale, was applied through interviews to all the producers of the districts that best represented the socioeconomic and environmental conditions of the studied micro region. The data were treated with factorial analysis, descriptive statistics and rank tests. A pre-disposition to create company associations was observed among most of the producers; nevertheless, some important elements (for instance... |

ABSTRACT Animal lysozymes, which have been studied in many of invertebrate and vertebrate species, have been characterized and demonstrated to be immune-associated molecules, digestive enzymes and multifunctional molecules. The purpose of this study was to detect the connection between lysozyme-gene polymorphism and the production traits of a Chinese native chicken breed (Langshan chicken). Four single nucleotide mutation sites were identified: G345A, C1726T, G1836A, A1838G. By the linkage disequilibrium analysis, six haplotypes and 15haplotype combinations were depicted in the studied population. The statistical analysis demonstrated that the SNPs and the haplotype combinations are related to body weight at sixteen weeks of age in Langshan chickens... |

Studies on the sociality of heterospecific assemblages of birds have promoted a greater understanding of the types of interactions and survivorship between coexisting species. This study verified the group compositions in bird assemblages and analyzed the sociality of migratory and resident species on sandy beaches of southeastern Brazil. A transect was established on the median portion of beaches and all the groups of bird species (monospecific, heterospecific) and solitary individuals were registered four days per month from November 2006 to April 2007. The sociality of each species was calculated by its frequency in heterospecific groups, its proportional number of contacts with other species in heterospecific groups, and the number of species that it... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the productive capacity of orchard grass alone and associated with perennial ryegrass and white clover sown at different proportions. Treatments consisted of the following associations and monoculture: 100-00-00, 70-20-10, 50-00-50, 40-40-20, 40-20-40, 20-70-10, 20-40-40, and 00-50-50% of orchard grass, perennial ryegrass, and white clover, respectively. The eight treatments were randomly distributed into 24 experimental plots of 9 × 8 m according to a completely randomized block design with three replicates. On average, the associations that had the highest herbage yield in two years were 40-20-40, 20-70-10, and 20-40-40 with 21038, 20709, and 20073 kg DM ha−1, respectively, and the lowest herbage... |

A study about species composition, relative abundance, densities, size composition, reproductive and recruiting periods, sex proportion and species diversity of the decapod populations associated to worm reefs of P. caudata (Kröyer, 1856) was carried out. Monthly, samples of worm reef were obtained from August/1997 to July/1998 from Caiobá Beach, Matinhos (25º51 'S and 48º32'W), Paraná State, southern Brazil. Air temperature oscillated from 14.5ºC (July) to 31.0ºC (February), surface water from 18.0ºC (July) to 28.0ºC (January and February), and the salinity from 22%0 (February) to 34%0 (September). Eigth decapod species were found: Petrolisthes armatus (Gibbes, 1850); Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850); Panopeus americanus Saussure, 1857;... |
