Carryover of tembotrione and atrazine affects yield and quality of potato tubers Agronomy
Reis, Marcelo Rodrigues; Aquino, Leonardo Ângelo; Melo, Christiane Augusta Diniz; Silva, Daniel Valadão; Dias, Roque Carvalho.
Crop rotation improves potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crops; however, in some cases, it can have some negative effects due to the herbicides previously used in crops under rotation. These effects are the decline in the yield and the appearance of physiological disorders, including cracked tubers, which impair the quality and economic value of the potato. Two field experiments were performed with applications of tembotrione and atrazine, alone or in combination. In the Rio Paranaiba (Minas Gerais State) area, in clay soil, the herbicides were applied at post-emergence in corn (Zea mays L.). After corn harvest and soil preparation, the potatoes were planted. In the Serra do Salitre (Minas Gerais State) area, in the medium texture soil, the herbicides were...

Morphological abnormality in a Longnose Stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) Biota Neotropica
Schmid,Kurt; Andrade,Marcelo; Machado,Fabiola; Araujo,Juliana; Corrêa,Eglé; Giarrizzo,Tommaso.
Abstract: A Longnose stingray Hypanus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) embryo with a major asymmetrical morphological abnormality to its pectoral fin was obtained from commercial shrimp fisher's bycatch, off the coast of the Amazon River Mouth in northern Brazil. The specimen and the deformity, which would presumably have impeded its long-term survival, are described and documented in detail. We herein provide the first report of an abnormal individual of this species for the Brazilian coast.

Effect of potassium sources on potato tuber yield and chip quality Horticultura Brasileira
Silva,Giovani O; Bortoletto,Antonio C; Carvalho,Agnaldo DF; Pereira,Arione S.
ABSTRACT Many potato producers for fry industry changed from the use of potassium chloride to potassium sulfate, as there is a concept that the use of this source improves tuber quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of these two potassium sources on yield, specific gravity and chip color of potato chipping cultivars. The experiment was carried out on a Dystrophic Red Latosol, in Canoinhas, Brazil, in spring season 2016. Treatments consisted of two potato cultivars, BRSIPR Bel and Atlantic, and two sources of potassium, chloride and sulfate, applied in the furrow at the planting time, in rates based on soil analysis. Experimental design was a randomized complete block in a split-plot arrangement with four replications. Main plots were...

Argo, the international array of profiling floats, is a major component of the global ocean and climate observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of the French “Investissements d’Avenir” Equipex program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to Argo’s core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2000 m), and also to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes how NAOS has met its objectives. The project significantly boosted France’s contribution to Argo’s core mission by...

Characterization and standardization of the Atlantic albacore French pelagic trawl fishery ArchiMer
Nikolic, Natacha; Lauretta, Matthew; Patucca, Audrey; Morandeau, Gilles.
We compiled and analysed logbook data from the French trawl albacore fishery covering the period 1991–2015. The dataset comprised catch and effort data for the French fleet operating in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea, as well as spatiotemporal and gear characteristics. Generalized linear modelling was used to model spatial, seasonal, environmental, and gear covariates of fleet CPUE rates. A long-term index of relative abundance is provided that can be integrated into the stock assessment of North Atlantic albacore. The analysis revealed higher albacore CPUE associated with relatively low sea surface temperature and distinct seasonal effects. The derived abundance trend for the French trawl fishery agreed with the estimated time series of stock abundance...

Répartition des foraminifères benthiques actuels sur le plateau continental sénégalais au sud de Dakar ArchiMer
Redois, F; Debenay, Jp.
Two hundred and twenty four benthic foraminiferal species were recognized in the total assemblages of fifty samples collected from the Senegalese continental shelf south of Dakar (down to a depth of 200 m). A factor analysis based on nineteen dominant species shows three main factors. The first two seem to be associated with temperature and its seasonal variations; they are depth-related and determine two main faunal changes. The third factor is substrate-related. The main depth-related species are: i) Cribrononion gerthi, Quinqueloculina akneriana, Quinqueloculina lamarckiana, Cribrolinoides curtus, Elphidium fichtellianum and Textularia sagittula in th coastal zone; ii) Discorbinella bertheloti, Cancris aff. Le " faux-poisson " d'Abidjan et la peche sous DCP derivants dans l'Atlantique tropical Est: circuit de commercialisation et role socio-economique ArchiMer
Romagny, B; Menard, Frederic; Dewals, P; Gaertner, Daniel; N'Goran, N.
Abidjan is the biggest fishing harbour of tropical tunas in the Gulf of Guinea (around 100 000 mt per year). Three canneries work on four species (yellowfin, skipjack, bigeye and albacore). Small size tuna, minor tuna and by-catches are refused by the canneries and are sold on the local market fish. It is the only part of the industrial purse seine catches directly sold in Abidjan. Since 1990, fishing operations on schools of tuna associated with artificial drifting FADs has become widespread. Log fishery allow to catch a majority of small tunas, and generates by-catches of various other pelagic species associated to the logs. The landed amounts of local market fish have increased: from 8 500 Mt per year estimated between 1987 and 1990, 21 000 Mt is...

Influence des variations des facteurs environnementaux sur la croissance de poissons de l'Atlantique ArchiMer
Barrios, Alexander.
The impact of biotic factors such as density-dependent processes, recruitment, total mortality, and abiotic factors such as upwelling intensity, temperature and chlorophyll a concentration on the variation of growth parameters of pelagic and demersal fish were studied during the periods 1990 - 2008 (pelagic) and 1971 - 2015 (demersal). Life history parameters vary according to the species and from one region to another and over time within a given area because of their plasticity and the high fishing pressure. Interspecies and inter-regional comparison were carried out. Non-linear mixed effects models were used on different fish species of the Atlantic Ocean in order to estimate the growth parameters at the individual and population levels. Variations in...

Drifting FADs used in tuna fisheries: an ecological trap? ArchiMer
Marsac, F; Fonteneau, Alain; Menard, Frederic.
This paper discusses the hypothesis that small tunas and the various species found in association with drifting fads (such as "mahi-mahi", rainbow runner, wahoo, etc.) may be biologically trapped by such a strong association. Massive seeding of drifting artificial fads was observed worldwide during recent years. In this hypothesis, we suggest that fads may alter some biological characteristics of epipelagic populations associated with them: migration, growth, condition factors, predation and natural mortality. As fads are most often used in the equatorial currents, they tend to exhibit zonal drift. Therefore, the associated populations would be artificially transferred from one part of the ocean to another, when they would show different movement patterns...

Extreme wave activity during 2013/2014 winter and morphological impacts along the Atlantic coast of Europe ArchiMer
Masselink, Gerd; Castelle, Bruno; Scott, Tim; Dodet, Guillaume; Suanez, Serge; Jackson, Derek; Floc'H, France.
Studies of coastal vulnerability due to climate change tend to focus on the consequences of sea level rise, rather than the complex coastal responses resulting from changes to the extreme wave climate. Here we investigate the 2013/2014 winter wave conditions that severely impacted the Atlantic coast of Europe and demonstrate that this winter was the most energetic along most of the Atlantic coast of Europe since at least 1948. Along exposed open-coast sites, extensive beach and dune erosion occurred due to offshore sediment transport. More sheltered sites experienced less erosion and one of the sites even experienced accretion due to beach rotation induced by alongshore sediment transport. Storm wave conditions such as were encountered during the 2013/2014...

Spatial and temporal patterns of benthic macrofaunal communities on the deep continental margin in the Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer
Galeron, Joelle; Menot, Lenaick; Renaud, Nolwenn; Crassous, Philippe; Khripounoff, Alexis; Treignier, C.; Sibuet, M..
Density, taxonomic composition at higher taxon level and vertical distribution of benthic macrofaunal communities and sediment characteristics (pore water, nitrogen, organic carbon, sulfur, C/N ratio, n-alcohol biomarkers) were examined at three deep sites on the Congo-Gabon continental margin. This study was part of the multidisciplinary BIOZAIRE project that aimed at studying the deep benthic ecosystems in the Gulf of Guinea. Sampling of macrofaunal communities and of sediment was conducted during three cruises (January 2001, December 2001 and December 2003) at two downslope sites (4000 m depth), one located near the Congo submarine channel (15 km in the south) and the other one far from the channel (150km in the South). Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device ArchiMer
Hallier, Jean-pierre; Delgado De Molina, A.
The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges...

Glacial-to-deglacial 14C reservoir ages of surface and deep waters from the mid- and low-latitude Atlantic ArchiMer
Blamer, Sven.
The 14C reservoir age of ocean surface waters shows small-scale spatial and temporal variations. Accordingly, correct estimates of reservoir ages are crucial for any reconstruction of a precise radiocarbon-based chronology of marine sediments. To meet this target in the mid- and low- latitude Atlantic we obtained both 14C reservoir ages and an absolute age model for the glacial-to-deglacial sections of four marine sediment cores by means of the ‘14C Plateau Tuning Technique’. This method is independent of any common conversion scheme of 14C ages. The resulting empiric reservoir ages were compared with reservoir age estimates based on model simulations.
