First record of breeding of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) in Southern Brazil Hornero
Joenck,Cristian M; Zilio,Felipe; de Mendonça-Lima,André.
We provide the first record of breeding of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) for southern Brazil. In September 2005 a nest was found inside the reservoir of the Barra Grande Hydroelectric Power Station, northern Rio Grande do Sul. On the nest there was a nestling around two months old. Based in prey remains collected on the nest, birds were the main item in diet. This is an endangered species in the Atlantic Rain Forest biome in Brazil and the presence of the nest and nestling offer evidence of reproduction in Southern Brazil.

A associação de Philopota sp. Wiedemann (Diptera, Acroceridae) com flores do Gervão-Azul, Stachytarphetta cayenensis (Verbenaceae) na Ilha da Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Entomología
Luz,José Roberto Pujol.
The acrocerids (small headed-flies) form a small group of flies, which are difficult to find and observe. They are rare in collections. Their larvae are heteromorphic parasitoids of many families of spiders and their imagoes show a great deal of morphological variation. Little is known about the biology and systematics of this group in the Neotropical region, especially the Philopotinae. Most studies are based on species from Europe and North America. The Philopotinae occurs througout the world, and are characterized by the strongly developed postpronota, which form a shield dorsally in front of the scutum. Fifty specimens of Philopota sp. were collected from branches of Stachytarphetta cayenensis (Verbenaceae) in the Ilha da Marambaia (23º 04' S - 43º 53'...

Genetic structure and conservation of Mountain Lions in the South-Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Castilho,Camila S.; Marins-Sá,Luiz G.; Benedet,Rodrigo C.; Freitas,Thales R.O..
The Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems worldwide, is also among the most important hotspots as regards biodiversity. Through intensive logging, the initial area has been reduced to around 12% of its original size. In this study we investigated the genetic variability and structure of the mountain lion, Puma concolor. Using 18 microsatellite loci we analyzed evidence of allele dropout, null alleles and stuttering, calculated the number of allele/locus, PIC, observed and expected heterozygosity, linkage disequilibrium, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, F IS, effective population size and genetic structure (MICROCHECKER, CERVUS, GENEPOP, FSTAT, ARLEQUIN, ONESAMP, LDNe, PCAGEN, GENECLASS software),we also determine whether there...

The tadpole of Hypsiboas atlanticus (Anura, Hylidae) from northeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nascimento,Filipe A. C. do; Lima,Marcelo G. de; Skuk,Gabriel O; Sá,Rafael O. de.
The tadpole of Hypsiboas atlanticus (Caramaschi & Velosa, 1996) is described from the municipality of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil. At stage 36 the larvae have an overall elliptical body in lateral and dorsal views, oral disc anteroventral, spiracular tube sinistral, and labial tooth row formula 2(1,2)/3(1). The oral disc is surrounded, almost completely (anterior medial gap present) by a single row of marginal papillae. Described tadpoles of the H. punctatus species group can be differentiated by a combined disc oral features. Additional descriptions of H. punctatus (Schneider, 1799) tadpoles from populations throughout South America may be helpful in determining the status of these populations.

Endemism analysis of Neotropical Pentatomidae (Hemiptera, Heteroptera) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ferrari,Augusto; Paladini,Andressa; Schwertner,Cristiano Feldens; Grazia,Jocelia.
The definition of areas of endemism is central to studies of historical biogeography, and their interrelationships are fundamental questions. Consistent hypotheses for the evolution of Pentatomidae in the Neotropical region depend on the accuracy of the units employed in the analyses, which in the case of studies of historical biogeography, may be areas of endemism. In this study, the distribution patterns of 222 species, belonging to 14 Pentatomidae (Hemiptera) genera, predominantly neotropical, were studied with the Analysis of Endemicity (NDM) to identify possible areas of endemism and to correlate them to previously delimited areas. The search by areas of endemism was carried out using grid-cell units of 2.5° and 5° latitude-longitude. The analysis...

Diversity of harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones) in Parque da Onça Parda, southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Resende,Leonardo P. A.; Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo; Bragagnolo,Cibele.
The environment most diverse in harvestmen species is the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo. However, there remains a lack of studies regarding their communities in certain regions. Among these regions is one south of the Paranapiacaba mountain range in the state of São Paulo, the Parque da Onça Parda (POP). Through nocturnal collections and pitfall traps, the region's harvestmen community has been studied. The observed richness of this site included 27 species, with dominance of three species: Holcobunus nigripalpis Roewer, 1910, Neosadocus maximus (Giltay, 1928) and Munequita sp., accounting for 68.4% of harvestmen abundance. This makes the diversity of POP more similar to the semideciduous Atlantic Forest communities of the interior than to those of the...

Mazzoni,Rosana; Araújo,Raphaella Rangel da Silva; Santos,Gardênia Carolina Tosta dos; Iglesias-Rios,Ricardo.
In the present work, we determined the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous food items as well as seasonal and ontogenetic variation in the feeding habits of Phalloceros anisophallos from córrego Andorinha, Ilha Grande. Quantitative analysis, based on alimentary index (IAi) and food volume (Vo), revealed that P. anisophallos fed on detritus, autochthonous algae (diatoms, unicellular and filamentous Chlorophyceae algae), autochthonous animals (aquatic insect larvae: Trichoptera, Chironomidae and other Diptera) and allochthonous animals (terrestrial insects: Hymenoptera). Ontogenetic variations were recorded for the consumption of each food category. Adults used a larger amount of algae and detritus, and juveniles used a higher amount of...

Carbon sink potential of multistrata agroforestry systems at Atlantic Rain Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Froufe, Luís Cláudio Maranhão; Rachwal, Marcos Fernando Gluck; Seoane, Carlos Eduardo Sicoli.
Carbon storage of agroforestry systems, regenerated areas, conventional agriculture and pasture was evaluated at Alto Ribeira Valley region, São Paulo State, Brazil, in different compartments of Land-use systems (LUS). In soil, classified as Entisols and Inceptisols, we found similarities among all LUS, dued to their low contents of organic carbon, and similar values of bulk density. The total carbon stocked on land-use systems, greater amounts were determined on regenerated areas (115.78 Mg ha-1), followed by agroforestry systems (75.38 Mg ha-1), agriculture (47.07 Mg ha-1), and pasture (36.01 Mg ha-1). Despite their conservative characteristic, the silvicultural practices of multistrata agroforestry systems have to be improved for forest production and...

The Herpetofauna from Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil): updating species composition, richness, distribution and endemisms Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte; Telles,Felipe Bottona da Silva; Vrcibradic,Davor; Nogueira-Costa,Paulo.
Abstract Ilha Grande is a large continental island (total area of 19,300 ha) situated at the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in southeast Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest Biome. Here we provide an update to the previous knowledge of the fauna of amphibians and reptiles occurring in Ilha Grande, based on primary data from our own fieldwork and on secondary data (from institutional collections and from the literature). We report the occurrence at Ilha Grande of a total of 74 species, being 34 amphibians (all of them anurans) and 40 reptiles (27 snakes, 11 lizards, one amphisbaenian and one crocodylian). Our survey added 14 species to the herpetofaunal list of Ilha Grande (three of amphibians and eleven of reptiles) and removed one species...

Reproductive biology of the herkogamous vine Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc. (Rubiaceae) in the Atlantic Rain Forest, SE Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Castro,Cibele Cardoso de; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio Alves Macedo de; Pimentel,Rejane Magalhães de Mendonça.
The family Rubiaceae comprises a wide spectrum of floral mechanisms and two of them seem to be common in certain groups, e.g., distyly in Rubioidae and styllar pollen in Ixoroidae. These mechanisms include herkogamy, which is interpreted as a strategy that avoids self-pollination. This is the first report on the reproductive biology of Chiococca alba, a species that is widely distributed in America. We studied floral biology and the mating system, which were evaluated through fruit set comparisons after controlled crosses (self- and cross-pollinations and test for apomixis), as well as through the evaluation of pollen tube growth resulting from these controlled crosses. Flowers of C. alba are herkogamous, cream, protandrous and lasted for two days. No...

Growth and leaf demography of two Cecropia species Rev. Bras. Bot.
SANTOS,FLAVIO A.M..
Allometry, growth and leaf demography of two Cecropia species, one with ant mutualist (C. glazioui) and another without it (C. hololeuca), were studied in an Atlantic Rain Forest area in the State of Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. Stem diameter was allometrically related to height in both species. Cecropia glazioui showed higher annual growth rates and longer internodes than C. hololeuca. Leaf phenology showed a seasonal pattern in both species, but the number of leaves on each plant was more variable along the year in C. hololeuca than in C. glazioui. Survivorship curves for leaves were intermediate between Deevey's Type I and Type II curves, with young leaves of C. glazioui showing a greater survival rate and life expectancy than those of C. hololeuca. Drosophilids (Diptera) from an Atlantic Forest Area in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Döge,Jonas S.; Valente,Vera L. S.; Hofmann,Paulo R. P..
The present work aims at knowing the faunal composition of drosophilids in forest areas of southern Brazil. Besides, estimation of species richness for this fauna is briefly discussed. The sampling were carried out in three well-preserved areas of the Atlantic Rain Forest in the State of Santa Catarina. In this study, 136,931 specimens were captured and 96.6% of them were identified in the specific level. The observed species richness (153 species) is the largest that has been registered in faunal inventories conducted in Brazil. Sixty-three of the captured species did not fit to the available descriptions, and we believe that most of them are non-described species. The incidence-based estimators tended to give rise to the largest richness estimates while...

Taxonomic status and redescription of Flectonotus ulei (Anura: Hemiphractidae), with a key for the species of Fritziana Rev. Bras. Zool.
Folly,Manuella; Hepp,Fabio; Carvalho-e-Silva,Sergio P.; Duellman,William E..
Based on preserved specimens from the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Flectonotus ulei Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 is resurrected from its synonymy with Flectonotus fissilis (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920) and is redescribed. Analysis of osteological characters and brood pouch structure confirms that F. ulei belongs to Fritziana. The species is small for the genus (snout-vent length in males, 19.2-26.9 mm, n = 2; in females, 20.3-21 mm, n = 4) and was found in bromeliads. Flectonotus ulei is characterized by dorsal pattern consisting of interorbital pentagon or hexagon-shaped mark delimited by heavy dark line, diameter of tympanum smaller than that of disc of third digit, and a brood pouch covering the eggs dorsally except for a narrow longitudinal slit; eggs...

Vocalizações de Scinax perpusillus (A. Lutz & B. Lutz) e S. arduous Peixoto (Anura, Hylidae), com comentários taxonômicos Zoologia
Pombal Jr.,José P.; Bastos,Rogério P..
Herein, the advertisement and territorial calls recorded from topotypes of Scinax arduous Peixoto, 2002 and S. perpusillus (A. Lutz & B. Lutz, 1939) are described. These two species belong to the Scinax perpusillus species group and show acoustic parameters of territorial calls similar to the catharinae species group, suggesting that they are phylogenetically related. The acoustic parameters of advertisement calls of S. arduous and S. perpusillus suggest a monophyletic origin for the Scinax perpusillus species group.
