The Role of the Land Surface Background State in Climate Predictability OceanDocs
Dirmeyer, P.A..
Skill in ensemble-mean dynamical seasonal climate hindcasts with a coupled land-atmosphere model and specified observed sea surface temperature is compared to that for long multi-decade integrations of the same model where the initial conditions are far removed from the seasons of validation. The evaluations are performed for surface temperature and compared among all seasons. Skill is found to be higher in the seasonal simulations than the multi-decadal integrations except during boreal winter. The higher skill is prominent even beyond the first month when the direct influence of the atmospheric initial state elevates model skill. Skill is generally found to be lowest during the winter season for the dynamical seasonal forecasts, equal to that of the long...

Instructions to the Marine Meteorological Observers, 7th Edition. OceanDocs
The ocean meteorological program of the Weather Bureau has two separate and distinct parts. First, there is the daily service by radio. Owing to the need for brevity, the radio reports contain a limited amount of essential information. The daily weather reports from ships and islands reveal the conditions over the ocean; when assembled on a map, including continental reports, they give a picture of weather conditions existing momentarily over a large region. A collection of observations is immediately returned to the mariner by radio broadcast so that he may draw his own weather map on shipboard. By this process, the weather at the earth's surface is mapped and much can be inferred as to conditions above the surface. Formation and movement of storms are...

New Astronomy in the COLA Atmospheric General Circulation Model OceanDocs
Marx, L..
Two new astronomy packages, Naval Observatory Vector Astrometry Subroutines/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NOVAS/JPL) and Berger (1978), have been installed in the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). These provide much greater accuracy and flexibility in representing the Sun’s position as seen by the Earth’s atmosphere in both realistic settings as well as those involving paleoclimate simulations and constrained astronomical parameter experiments. Their computational efficiency provide low cost for any period of time being simulated. Details and implementation are discussed. The errors are also reviewed and comparisons are made with the original Spencer (1971) astronomy calculation. The accuracy and...

Modelado Numérico del Maremoto de Pisco 2007 OceanDocs
Moggiano Aburto, Nabilt Jill.
