Pesticide risk perception and use of personal protective equipment among young and old cotton growers in northern Greece Agrociencia
Damalas,Christos Asterios; Hashemi,Seyyed Mahmoud.
Conventionally grown cotton receives many pesticide treatments each year, but protective measures of growers during pesticide handling may vary considerably. A survey to cotton growers was conducted in northern Greece to study the perception risk to pesticide and the use of personal protective equipment in young (below 35 years old) and old (above 50 years old) growers. Both groups showed high acceptability about using pesticides, considering them necessary for high yield, product quality and pest management for cotton in Greece. Young growers revealed higher levels of risk perception due to adverse effects of pesticide on users' health than old growers, who felt that pesticides are safe if used according to the manufacturer's instructions and less...

Kidney health for everyone everywhere – from prevention to detection and equitable access to care BJMBR
Li,P. Kam-Tao; Garcia-Garcia,G.; Lui,Siu-Fai; Andreoli,S.; Fung,W. Wing-Shing; Hradsky,A.; Kumaraswami,L.; Liakopoulos,V.; Rakhimova,Z.; Saadi,G.; Strani,L.; Ulasi,I.; Kalantar-Zadeh,K..
The global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rapidly increasing with a projection of becoming the 5th most common cause of years of life lost globally by 2040. CKD is a major cause of catastrophic health expenditure. The costs of dialysis and transplantation consume up to 3% of the annual healthcare budget in high-income countries. However, the onset and progression of CKD is often preventable. In 2020, the World Kidney Day campaign highlights the importance of preventive interventions – be it primary, secondary, or tertiary. This article focuses on outlining and analyzing measures that can be implemented in every country to promote and advance CKD prevention. Primary prevention of kidney disease should focus on the modification of risk factors and...

Socio-economic determinants of the awareness and adoption of citrus production practices in Pakistan Ciência Rural
Ashraf,Saleem; Khan,Ghazanfar Ali; Ali,Shoukat; Iftikhar,Muhammad.
Citrus is the leading fruit of Pakistan and famous worldwide especially kinnow cultivar because of its pleasant taste and remarkable quality. The yield of citrus per hectare in Pakistan is almost half of potential due to non-adoption of recommended horticultural practices by citrus growers. Adopting a decision regarding the improvement of practices is usually influenced by various factors including farmers' socio-economic attributes. In order to determine the relationship between socio-economic aspects and the awareness and adoption of recommended citrus production practices the present study was carried out in Sargodha district from central Punjab, Pakistan. The Study was based upon cross sectional survey research design due to availability of sampling...

Evaluating Responses in Complex Adaptive Systems: Insights on Water Management from the Southern African Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (SAfMA) Ecology and Society
Bohensky, Erin; University of Pretoria; ebohensky@zoology.up.ac.za; Lynam, Timothy; University of Zimbabwe; tlynam@science.uz.ac.zw.
Ecosystem services are embedded in complex adaptive systems. These systems are riddled with nonlinearities, uncertainties, and surprises, and are made increasingly complex by the many human responses to problems or changes arising within them. In this paper we attempt to determine whether there are certain factors that characterize effective responses in complex systems. We construct a framework for response evaluation with three interconnected scopes or spatial and temporal domains: the scope of an impact, the scope of the awareness of the impact, and the scope of the power or influence to respond. Drawing from the experience of the Southern African Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (SAfMA), we explore the applicability of this framework to the example of...

Awareness of e-learning resources in contrast to actual usage at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine OAK
Campbell, David; KUBOTA, Miyuki; キャンベル, ディビッド; 久保田, 美由紀.
In 2001, e-learning, as a part of the government’s e-Japan initiative, began to be introduced in universities throughout Japan. Now almost ten years later it is necessary to evaluate how successful this strategy has been by looking at the awareness and usage of e-learning at one small agriculture university. This was done by conducting a survey to gauge student, faculty, and staff awareness of e-learning resources and talking to people in different departments responsible for e-learning on campus. From this research it was discovered that individuals are familiar with the term"elearning", but not sure what it entails. Also it was found that even though there have been a variety of e-learning resources available for 4 years (2006-2010) very few people have...

Who knows, Who Cares?: Determinants of Enactment, Awareness and Compliance With Community Natural Resource Management Bylaws in Uganda AgEcon
Nkonya, Ephraim M.; Pender, John L.; Kato, Edward; Mugarura, Samuel; Muwonge, James.
Community-based Natural Resource Management (NRM) is increasingly becoming an important approach for addressing natural resource degradation in low income countries. This study analyzes the determinants of enactment, awareness of and compliance with by-laws related to Natural Resource Management (NRM) in order to draw policy implications that could be used to increase the effectiveness of by-laws in managing natural resources sustainably. We found a strong association between awareness and compliance with NRM bylaws. This suggests the need to promote environmental education as part of the strategy to increase compliance with NRM bylaws. Econometric analysis of the survey data indicates factors that are associated with enactment of local NRM bylaws, and...

Estimation of Actual and Potential Adoption Rates and Determinants of Improved Rice Variety Among Rice Farmers in Nigeria: The Case of NERICAs AgEcon
Dontsop Nguezet, Paul Martin; Diagne, Aliou; Okoruwa, Victor O..
The article used the ATE estimation framework to derive consistent semi-parametric estimators of population adoption rates and their determinants of the NERICA (New Rice for Africa) rice varieties in Nigeria. Empirical evidence shows that the observed sample adoption rate does not consistently estimate the population adoption rate even if the sample is random. NERICA awareness was found to be a major constraint to NERICA adoption in Nigeria. Several socioeconomic/demographic characteristics were found to be important determinants of NERICA awareness and adoption. Among those factors are age, gender, major occupation, year of experience and vocational training. In particular, we have found that the NERICA adoption rate in Nigeria would have been up to 76%...

Finding tomorrow’s agricultural workforce AgEcon
Nelson, Sam.
The labour shortages which face the Australian agricultural sector could be described as having both acute and chronic aspects. Acute labour shortages can be related to short-term factors; examples include the impacts of extended drought and strong growth within the mining sector which has led to strong competition for labour and a decline in the available labour force. The potential emergence of chronic or long-lasting labour shortages related to a decline in new entrants seeking employment in the sector is a significant issue. While acute labour shortages have been a significant focus for the agricultural industries for many years, agricultural industries now need to invest in strategies to address chronic workforce shortages and emerging skills gaps....

Peasants’ Awareness of Land Property Rights — A Case Study of Dalu Town, Bishan County, Chongqing AgEcon
Zheng, Cai-gui; Qiu, Dao-chi; Ye, Gong-qiang; Zhang, Xiao-cheng; Liang, Qi-xue.
Taking Dalu Town, Bishan County, Chongqing as an example, general characteristics of peasants’ awareness of land property rights, as well as its differences at different ages, education degree and income level are discussed, according to the questionnaire survey on peasants’ awareness of land property rights in 14 villages. Four suggestions are put forward to improve the property right system, such as adhering to the reform direction of collective ownership, defining the owner of the collective, giving the complete ownership power to the owner, and ensuring the usufructuary right of land for peasants. Result shows that the understanding of land ownership is obscure and the tendency of land privatization is insignificant. Nearly 2/3 peasants think that...

Dynamic Processes in Contingent Valuation: A Case Study Involving the Mahogany Glider AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo; Swarna Nantha, Hemanath.
This paper reports the results of an experiment involving a sample of 204 members of the public who were assessed on three occasions about their willingness to pay for the conservation of the mahogany glider. They were asked this question prior to information being provided to them about the glider and other focal wildlife species; after such information was provided, and finally after participants had had an opportunity to see live specimens of this glider. The mean willingness to pay of the relevant samples are compared and found to show significant variations. Theories are considered that help explain the dynamics of these variations. Serious concerns are raised about the capacity of information provision to reveal ‘true’ contingent valuations of public...
