Variations in recruitment of benthic invertebrate species with pelagic larvae, which inhabit estuaries, can be reduced by the vertical distribution of larvae. In fact, they may be located in water masses in which net transport favours retention in the vicinity of estuaries. Such a hypothesis can explain the Pectinaria koreni population stability in the western bay of Seine. The vertical distribution of P. koreni larvae is in relation to the turbulence level. When turbulence is low, strong water stratification is present, and larvae are then most abundant under the halocline (in water masses where salinity is more than 30.5). Moreover, a strong ontogenetic migration is observed : young larvae occupy the upper part of the water column and old larvae the... |

The dynamics and growth of Owenia fusiformis juveniles were studied over a period of three months under different edaphic conditions in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine. Post-larval settlement was synchronous and showed the same high densities in different communities with or without adult populations. There was a rapid disappearance at the juvenile stage in the unfavourable bottoms. The distribution of the juveniles was gregarious. Growth was slow during the first month ; it was also highly variable. Growth differences were observed between stations: growth was higher in the station located just seaward of the Seine estuary. The relationships between edaphism, recruitment and growth of juveniles are discussed in relation to the changes in space and... |

Cd and V were analyzed in planktonic species (zooplankton and diatoms), in flocks and in total seston (suspended materials) collected at eleven stations for seven sampling periods in the eastern area of the bay of Seine. Cd concentrations measured in planktonic species of the bay of Seine are identical to those measured in other oceanic areas, but V concentrations are generally higher. In the conditions of sampling, the role of both planktonic species and flocks in the horizontal fluxes of Cd and V in the bay of Seine appears not to be important (Cd) or negligible (V) compared to non-living materials (tripton). Nevertheless, this study should be continued in periods of diatom blooms. Flocks which present high Cd and V concentration probably have an... |
