Strategies and Challenges of Internationalisation in BRIC-Countries: Empirical Results from the German Agribusiness 31
Heyder, Matthias; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The objective of this paper is to identify the strategies and instruments that agribusiness companies currently use to cope with the globalisation of agricultural markets. This aim is achieved by means of presenting the empirical results of an online and telephone survey that was undertaken between April and August 2010 with the participation of 113 German agribusiness firms. The majority of respondents expect that the importance of the markets in the BRIC countries will increase remarkably in the future. For developing international business activities, comparatively simple strategies such as direct and indirect exports via domestic and international traders are most widely used. This may be the result of challenges the agribusiness companies are facing...

Structural Breaks and Financial Volatility: Lessons from BRIC Countries 31
Morales, Lucia; Gassie, Esmeralda.
Despite the fact that there is a substantial literature on the analysis of volatility spillovers between stock returns and domestic exchange rates, surprisingly, little empirical research has examined volatility spillovers between oil prices and emerging economies, where a clear gap of research have been found regarding to the BRIC financial markets and the effects of the 2007-2009 World economy crisis. This lack of research might appear as surprising given that energy markets are of particular interest as they are considered a fundamental reference for economic recovery and growth. Therefore, this work aims to address this gap on the literature by looking at the BRIC financial markets and their co-movements with regard to some energy markets (oil, natural...

Status and Development in the Dairy Sector in the BRIC 31
Ramanovich, Mikhail; Ndambi, Asaah; Hemme, Torsten.
Milk production is a very important element of the whole dairy chain. The BRIC countries are among the top 6 milk producing countries and produce nearly one third of the world’s total milk volume. A large number of dairy animals and a relatively low milk output per animal show a great potential of the BRIC for a further growth of production. In the same time the BRIC countries comprise 42% of world’s population. Expected population and prosperity growth will lead to a further growth in milk demand. The BRIC countries have a competitive level of milk production cost in international comparison. The success of the BRIC counties in the international milk market will depend on the contribution of all stakeholders in the dairy chain: farmers, processors,...

Trends and Prospects of Lithuania's Trade in Agricultural and Food Products with BRICs 31
Bogdanov, Andrej; Petuchova, Tamara.
This study explores trends and perspectives of Lithuania’s trade in agricultural and food products with the BRIC countries. Agriculture is one of the priority sectors of Lithuania’s economy and plays an important economic and social role. The share of agricultural and food products within the overall foreign trade of Lithuania is significant, and exports to the BRIC countries account for nearly one third of the Lithuanian agricultural and food products exports. BRICs economic development and growing population leads to the increasing food consumption. The potential of these markets is attractive for Lithuania’s foreign trade. Therefore, consideration of trade flow in food and agricultural products between Lithuania and the BRIC countries is currently very...
