Bacterial adhesion to inert surfaces is a complex process influenced by environmental conditions. In this work, the influence of growth medium and temperature on the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes to polystyrene surfaces was studied. Most bacteria demonstrated the highest adhesion when cultured in TSYEA, except S. marcescens, which showed to be positively influenced by the pigment production, favored in poor nutrient media (lactose and peptone agar). P. aeruginosa adhesion to polystyrene increased at low temperatures whatever the medium used. The culture medium influenced the surface properties of the bacteria as assessed by the MATS test. |

This study evaluated, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity and the anti-adherent property of xylitol (0.5, 2.5 and 5.0%, w/v) on two Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains (ATCC 9027 and clinical). The assay of antimicrobial activity was performed to determine a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the adhesion test was performed, by which the parameters regarding, growth in the culture medium, number of colony forming units (CFUs) released and slide evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were analyzed. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed for statistical analysis. Efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in reducing the cell number of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli K-12 adhered to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films was evaluated. The microorganisms were let to adhere to the surface of LPDE bags for 12h at 18ºC, and then submitted to UV radiation at an intensity 196 µW.cm-2, 254nm, for 2 seconds. Staphylococcus aureus was less resistant to UV radiation than E. coli, and the efficiency increased with the increase of the concentration of microbial suspension. After 1500 hours of use the UV radiation intensity of the lamp was reduced from 288 to 78 µW.cm-2, and the higher decrease occurred in the first 100 hours of use.
