Summer mortality associated with juveniles of the oyster Crassostrea gigas is probably the result of a complex interaction between the host, pathogens and environmental factors. Genetic variability in the host appears to be a major determinant in its sensitivity to summer mortality. Previously, divergent selection criteria based on summer survival have been applied to produce oyster families with resistant and susceptible progeny. In this paper, we describe the use of suppression subtractive hybridization to generate 150 C gigas clones that were differentially regulated between resistant and susceptible F2 progeny. The nucleotide sequence of these clones was determined. In 28%, the inferred amino sequence was found to match the products of known genes, 14%... |

The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of probiotic (Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, X34 strain) treatment on the complete development (from veliger to metamorphosis) of Pecten maximus larvae in the context of a bacterial challenge and in conditions more representative of hatchery practices. To that effect, the present study was divided into two main steps. In the first, we used in vitro analyses (antibiograms and microplate assays) to validate the inhibition abilities of X34 on the growth of four Vibrio pathogen species. During the second step, we added pathogens (Vibrio pectenicida) into rearing tanks after two weeks of pre-treatment with the probiotic and then followed the larval development of Pecten maximus through the monitoring of survival... |

ABSTRACTIn fish farmings, diseases can be reduced by using immunostimulants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunostimulant potential of Mentha piperita in tambaqui fed with 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of oil per kg of commercial fish feed. The fish were inoculated with Aeromonas hydrophila to challenge them. Hematological and biochemical parameters were determined after 30 days of feeding and seven days after the challenge. There was no mortality and M. piperita oil did not influence fish production parameters. However, blood hemoglobin concentration (Hb) increased in the fish fed with 0.5 and 1.5% of oil per kg of diet; albumin increased in those fed with 1.0%; cholesterol increased in all groups with oil; and triglycerides increased in those fed... |
