The Adaptation Policy Paradox: the Implementation Deficit of Policies Framed as Climate Change Adaptation Ecology and Society
Dupuis, Johann; Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP), University of Lausanne; dupuis.johann@gmail.com; Knoepfel, Peter; Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP), University of Lausanne; Peter.Knoepfel@idheap.unil.ch.
The implementation of adaptation policies suffers from barriers and limits; even though adaptation is now set on the political agendas of developed and developing countries, surprisingly few examples of concrete policy realizations are found in comparative assessments. We investigate how the framings of adaptation as a policy problem can relate to tractability issues in implementation. We distinguish three framings of adaptation: climate change adaptation (CCA), climate variability adaptation (CVA), and vulnerability-centered adaptation (VCA) that imply conflicting interpretations of the collective problem to be solved and the goals to be attained through policy solutions. Through the methodology of comparative case studies, we conduct an empirical...

Cumulative Effects of Barriers on the Movements of Forest Birds Ecology and Society
St. Clair, Colleen Cassady; University of Alberta; cstclair@ualberta.ca.
Although there is a consensus of opinion that habitat fragmentation has deleterious effects on animal populations, primarily by inhibiting dispersal among remaining patches, there have been few explicit demonstrations of the ways by which degraded habitats actually constrain individual movement. Two impediments are primarily responsible for this paucity: it is difficult to separate the effects of habitat fragmentation (configuration) from habitat loss (composition), and conventional measures of fragmented habitats are assumed to be, but probably are not, isotropic. We addressed these limitations by standardizing differences in forest cover in a clearly anisotropic configuration of habitat fragmentation by conducting a homing experiment with three species...

Terrestrial mammals of the Jequitinhonha River basin, Brazil: a transition area between Atlantic Forest and Cerrado Mastozool. neotrop.
Geise,Lena; Pereira,Luciana G; Astúa,Diego; Aguieiras,Marcia; Lessa,Leonardo G; Asfora,Paulo H; Dourado,Francisco; Esberárd,Carlos E. L.
Here we present an extensive survey for non-volant mammals along the margins of the Jequitinhonha River, which represents a contact area between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes. Our data were obtained after 13 trapping expeditions (from 2005 to 2012) on both banks of the river, from its source to its mouth, enriched by data obtained from a literature review and voucher specimens deposited in six mammal collections. All collected specimens were identified through their karyotypes and/or morphology. We obtained data for 75 localities (34 at the rigth margin, 42 at the left margin; 30 in the Cerrado and 45 in the Atlantic Forest). We obtained voucher records for 91 species, ca. 17% of all known Brazilian terrestrial non-volant mammals. Our results...

Culverts in paved roads as suitable passages for Neotropical fish species Neotropical Ichthyology
Makrakis,Sergio; Castro-Santos,Theodore; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Wagner,Ricardo Luiz; Adames,Maurício Spagnolo.
Improperly installed or poorly maintained culverts can pose a serious threat to fish by disrupting their habitat and endangering spawning success. Road culverts that are not designed for fish passage frequently can become obstacles. This can be especially problematic for migratory species, but can lead to fragmentation of resident populations as well. This study evaluated 40 culverts of 29 sites within a 25-km radius from Toledo city, Paraná State, southern Brazil, with respect to their likely effects on movement of the local ichthyofauna. We collected data on the shape and length of culverts, culvert material, waterfall height, water column depth, slope, and estimated flow velocity. Culverts were categorized by level of barrier risk for upstream...

Nutritional & Health Claimed Products Market Development in Serbia: Exploration of Findings Obtained from In Depth Interviews AgEcon
Stojanovic, Zaklina; Ognjanov, Galjina; Dragutinovic-Mitrovic, Radmila.
The main objective of this paper is to present the most relevant findings obtained from in depth interviews with processors and retailers about the N&H claimed products market in Serbia. In our research we addressed the following set of topics: motivations and barriers to offer N&H claimed products at domestic market and perception of consumer demand toward N&H claimed products in Serbia. Significant differences between Serbia and other WBC are explored. Statistical testing includes nonparametric test based on two independent samples (Mann- Whitney test). Findings support overall conclusion that this market segment in Serbia is underdeveloped and rather producer than consumer driven.

Liberalizing Agricultural Trade: Will It Ever Be a Reality? AgEcon
McCalla, Alex F..
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Agriculture was signed in June 1994. It accomplished two things: it brought agricultural trade under the rules of WTO, and it set schedules for reducing barriers to trade under the three pillars of liberalization--market access, export assistance, and domestic support. Nine years later there has been precious little liberalization. The new Doha Round has ambitious objectives for agricultural trade liberalization. However, given recent behavior by rich developed countries, it seems unlikely that developing countries will get increased access to Northern markets or reduced competition from subsidized exports, despite their now representing a majority of WTO members.

Geometric morphometrics of Aedes aegypti populations and study of transmission of arboviral diseases in Barreiras, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Arcanjo,Danielle Beatriz Marques Campos; Vidal,Paloma Oliveira; Santos,José Yure Gomes dos; Venancio,Larissa Paola Rodrigues; Suesdek,Lincoln; Amorim,Jaime Henrique.
Abstract Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (A. aegypti) transmits arboviral diseases of high public health importance, including those caused by Zika virus (ZIKV), Dengue virus (DENV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Yellow fever virus (YFV). Barreiras is a city with 157,638 inhabitants in the West of the State of Bahia, Northeast of Brazil. The climate is dry, with well-determined and concentrated seasons of rains. The city is crossed by a Federal Highway and by the Rio Grande river. In this study, we aimed to understand the dynamics of mosquito vectors and arboviral diseases in Barreiras. We used correlation statistics to investigate a possible relationship among rains, mosquito abundance and transmission of diseases. In addition, as a preliminary population...
