The value of public health research and the division between basic vs. applied science BJID
Almeida-Filho,Naomar; Goldbaum,Moisés.
We question the movement towards exclusion of population and social health research from the field of science. The background under analysis is contemporary Brazil, where the scientific field that hosts this kind of research is known as Collective Health. First, the problem is formalized on logical grounds, evaluating the pertinence of considering unscientific the many objects and methods of public health research. Secondly, the cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and external causes are brought in as illustrations of the kind of scientific problem faced in health research today. The logical and epistemological basis of different forms of "scientific segregation" based on biomedical reductionism is analyzed, departing from three theses: (i) the ethics of the...

Multidisciplinary Approach in the Teaching of Dental Sculpture and Anatomy International Journal of Morphology
Buchaim,Rogério Leone; Andreo,Jesus Carlos; Rodrigues,Antonio de Castro; Gonçalves,Jéssica Barbosa de Oliveira; Daré,Letícia Rossi; Rosa Júnior,Geraldo Marco; Buchaim,Daniela Vieira; de Oliveira,José Américo.
The purpose of the Dental Sculpture and Anatomy discipline is to introduce undergraduate students to the study of the anatomic and morphological characteristics of permanent and primary human dentition, through classes, books and cognitive and psychomotor activities. This discipline supports the teaching of specific knowledge necessary for a more extensive education, involving interdisciplinarity as a means of knowledge exchange among several areas of dentistry, to achieve comprehensive professional education. Students must recognize the dental morphology from samples of preserved teeth, and reproduce the morphology through three-dimensional models made of stone or wax blocks. In this article, the authors describe the process for producing teeth collars...

Future Perspectives of Anatomy in Dental Education: Quo Vadis? International Journal of Morphology
Balcioglu,H. A; Kokten,G; Guven,Y.
Anatomists have become familiar with an ongoing debate about the integration of basic sciences into the clinical context or vice versa. Although various educational modalities in dental school curricula and changes in curricular strategies challenge anatomists, the priorities in teaching anatomy and the emergency of presenting fundamental concepts in order to integrate students' basic science skills into the clinic led educators to develop new teaching methods. A search for improved efficiency and impact of the presentation of knowledge to the students in order to foster positive feedback should be one of the major responsibilities of the educators in basic sciences. New gold standards, such as computer-based learning tools and computer-assisted...
