Two cruises (April and June 1997) were carried out in the Bay of Seine, a nitrate- and ammonium-enriched ecosystem of Western Europe, to identify the major mechanisms that control delta(15)N and VC in spring particulate organic matter (POM). Particulate organic nitrogen (PON) delta(15)N ranged between 0.8 and 5.2parts per thousand in April and between 2.2 and 6.2parts per thousand in June, while particulate organic carbon (POC) delta(13)C ranged between -24.3 and -19.7parts per thousand, and between -20.0 and -16.2parts per thousand during the same periods. During spring 1997, POM was highly dominated by autochthonous phytoplankton. It is shown that the variation of PON delta(15)N is due to both nitrate mixing between river and marine waters and... |

New high-resolution seismic data complemented with bedrock samples allowed us to propose a revised geological map of the Bay of Seine and to better define the control by the geological substrate on the morphogenesis and evolution of the Seine River during Pleistocene times. The new data confirm previous works. The Bay of Seine can be divided into two geological parts: a Mesozoic monocline domain occupying most of the bay and a syncline domain, mostly Tertiary, in the north, at the transition with the Central English Channel area. The highlighting of Eocene synsedimentary deformations, marked by sliding blocks in the syncline domain, is one of the most original inputs of this new study in the Bay of Seine that underlines the significant role of the... |

The impact of 70 years of dumping harbour dredged material on ecosystem functioning was compared to a control site (non-impacted zone). A combination of indices (Shannon-Wiener diversity, Pielou evenness, BO2A, AMBI benthic indices) and modelling (Ecopath models) generated Ecological Network Analysis indices were used to detect the dumping operations effects. ENA indices showed that dumping operations appear to have a relatively limited impact on the structure and flow pattern of the local food web. In fact, only small variations between the two sites are revealed by a comparison of ENA indices between the impacted and non-impacted zone. This result could be explained by the fact that the Bay of Seine is historically characterized by a high level of human... |

The data of hydrology, nutrients and chlorophyll obtained in the Bay of Seine over the period 1978-1994, from 14 océanographie cruises, are synthetised and illustrated by an atlas. The Bay is a typical example of a coastal area influenced by a large river. In winter, the nutrient input is drained off into the eastern Channel. In spring, nutrients are consumed intensively. Silicate is the first that drops to limiting levels. The spring bloom generally begins in the centre-east of the Bay. Chlorophyll a can reach up to 40-70 µg/l during the year, values typical of eutrophic coastal areas. Despite the regular increase of nitrogen inputs, the biomass (as chlorophyll) has not significantly changed over a fifteen year period. |

Phytoplankton distribution and primary productivity were investigated in the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel, France) in spring and early summer of 1992 and 1994. In 1992, the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton species was determined over the whole Bay of Seine. In 1994, species distribution and primary productivity were studied along the salinity gradient of the Seine plume and in the neighbouring marine waters. Phytoplankton distribution was characterised by the permanent diatom dominance from early spring to early summer. The spring bloom did not occur uniformly over the bay, but was initiated in the marine waters, in the middle of the bay and progressed towards the coast where it developed, in June, in the diluted waters of the Seine plume.... |

Using recent indices developed, in part, for use under the European Water Framework Directive (AMBI, BENTIX, BOPA BQI, I2EC and the trophic index ITI), the ecological quality status of two highly contaminated environments-the Bay of Seine and the Seine estuary (Eastern English Channel)-was determined on several spatial and temporal scales. Data from 604 observations gathered over a 14-year period (1988-2002) were analyzed, and the results used to show the relationship between biotic indices, environmental variables and classic descriptors (e.g., number of species, total abundance, dominance index, ES(50) and Shannon/Brillouin diversities). Though the specific ecological quality (EcoQ) values calculated with the various indices were different, the overall... |

Asthenognathus atlanticus Monod, 1932, has been reported for the first time from the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel). A total of 30 specimens were collected between the years 2008 and 2011, along the Normandy coast from Ouistreham to Antifer, mainly on mud and muddy sand habitats, between 10 and 25 m depth. The distribution range of A. atlanticus has been previously known to cover eastern Atlantic coasts from Angola to the western English Channel, where it reached its northern limits. It is also present in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. The changes in the sediment composition of the eastern Bay of Seine have probably led to the development of a potentially favorable habitat for this species. However, the data... |

Since late 1990s the annelid polychaete Melinna palmata and the mollusc bivalve Ensis directus have been collected in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (English Channel), indicating changes in the benthic communities. Melinna palmata was never collected prior to 2002, whereas it was reported in the muddy fine sands of the western part of the Channel, along the French (e.g. Bay of Cherbourg) and southern UK (e.g. Southampton Waters) coasts. Ensis directus was first reported in 1998 and now appears to be well implanted, given the abundant population collected in 2006. The colonization of Melina palmata seems to be a consequence of recent increase of the fine sediment in the eastern part of the Bay, while that of the invasive Ensis directus seems more... |

This study, carried out from 1995 to 1997, within the framework of "Le Havre" harbour extension project, concerned halieutic populations and the characterization of a coastal nursery in the oriental part of the Seine bay and the Seine estuary . The main objective was to describe the specific and demographic composition of marine populations and their spatio-temporal distribution, and so assess the biological and halieutic role of this area. This study also included a research about the dietary needs of fish juveniles living in the estuary. Autumn and winter surveys results show that the estuary and area under direct influence are the richest from a biological and halieutic point of view. The mouth estuary isthe richest area in terms of diversity of... |

As part of the French National Programme for Coastal Oceanography, this paper focuses on improvement of biogeochemical modelling in the: Bay of Seine (Eastern Channel), by introducing phosphorus in nutrient cycles. The Bay of Seine receives the Seine river, which exhibits very high nutrient concentrations, and this coastal zone constitutes a typical case of eutrophication in a river plume area. In terms of analyses, sequential extraction and analysis of sedimentary phosphorus were used in order, to measure various forms of particulate phosphorus in suspended matter and sediment (calcium-bound phosphate, Fe/Al-bound phosphate, exchangeable phosphate and organic phosphorus). In the modelling approach, the Bay is divided into 42 boxes and a two-layer,... |

The assessment of the King scallop stock of the Bay of Seine (Pecten maximus) was carried out in July 2019, in the Bay of Seine sensu stricto, located in French territorial waters (from the Normandy coast to the south to the limit of 12 nautical miles to the North), as well as the bordering zone lying north of this 12-mile limit and up to a latitude of 49°48N to the North, called "Extérieur Baie de Seine". For this, a scientific survey, based on a stratified random sampling plan, was conducted aboard the F/R Thalia, a coastal research vessel of the French Oceanographic Fleet. Nearly 170 sampling points were completed in the whole area. Analysis of these data leads to an overall increase in exploitable biomass over the entire area. Outside the Bay of Seine,... |
