Influence of genotype-environment interaction on the classification of Nellore bulls in Southern Brazil Animal Sciences
Bresolin, Tiago; Everling, Dionéia Magda; Rorato, Paulo Roberto Nogara; Braz, Camila Urbano; Breda, Fernanda Cristina.
The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction, as well as its effects on the magnitude of genetic parameters and the classification of Nellore breeding bulls for the trait adjusted weight at 205 days (W205) on Southern Brazil. The components of (co)variance were estimated by Bayesian inference, using a linear-linear animal model in a bi-trait analysis. The proposed model for the analyses considers as random the direct additive genetic and maternal effects and residual effects, and as fixed effects the contemporary groups, sex, season of birth and weighing, and calving age as covariable  (linear and quadratic effects). The a posteriori mean estimates of the direct heritabilities for W205 in the three States varied...

Genetic parameters estimates for gestation length in beef cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rocha,J.C.M.C.; Tonhati,H.; Alencar,M.M.; Lôbo,R.B..
Variance components were estimated for gestation length fitting the additive direct effect of calf, maternal genetic effect and sire effect as random effects. The statistical models also included the fixed effects of contemporary group, that included the date of breeding (AI), date of birth, and sex of calf, and the covariate age of dam at calving (linear and quadratic). Two different models were used, model 1 considering GL as a trait of the calf, and model 2 considering GL as a trait of the dam. The means of gestation length for the purebred animals were 294.55 days (males) and 293.34 days (females), while for the crossbred animals they were 292.49 days (males) and 292.55 days (females). Variance components for the purebred animals, fitting model 1, were...

Mineral deficiencies in beef cattle from southern Brazil Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Valle,Stella de Faria; González,Félix Diaz; Rocha,Dimas; Scalzilli,Haydée Beatriz; Campo,Rómulo; Larosa,Verônica Lima.
Minerals play an important role in the cattle metabolism with great impact in productive and reproductive performance of animals raised on extensive grasslands. At present, there is a lack of information concerning mineral deficiency throughout the analysis of biological fluids in Rio Grande do Sul State (southern Brazil). The Central Valley region of this State is characterized by extensive production on natural pastures with poor mineral supplementation. The low levels of minerals found by previous studies on pastures in this area motivated this research. The aim of the present work was to detect possible mineral deficiencies in beef cows by determining concentrations of minerals in biological fluids and in pasture. There were determined concentrations...
