BSE Disease Outbreaks, Structural Change and Market Power in the Canadian Beef Industry AgEcon
Clark, J. Stephen; Cechura, Lukas; Berhanu, Adugna.
This study examines farm to wholesale prices spreads to measure the impact of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) disease outbreak on the Canadian beef industry. The study uses structure break tests developed by Gregory and Hansen (1996) and Hansen (1992) examine possible breaks within cointegrating relationships. The study finds evidence that the industry began a realignment as a result of the UK BSE disease outbreak, and the Canadian BSE disease outbreak was simply the largest realignment of the process beginning with the UK disease outbreak. However, the only statistically significant break was the BSE disease outbreak itself in May 2003. Stability was not restored until the border was reopened in 2005. Specific results indicated that the...

Identifying Processors' Procurement Preferences: Implications for Developing a Forward Contracting Scheme in China's Beef Industry AgEcon
Gong, Wen; Parton, Kevin A.; Zhou, Zhang-Yue; Cox, Rodney J..
Beef processors' procurement channel selection is a critical element of a successful supply chain in addressing challenges of food safety from consumers. However, preference-based studies of cattle procurement methods in China are scarce. In this study, the conjoint modelling approach is used to determine processors' perceptions of various procurement channels. Initial results based on a survey of 43 beef processors suggest that the beef processing industry is still at the early stage of development and processors place most value on regular suppliers and good trust. Findings will be used in developing policies that encourage forward contracting between producers and processors.

Sources of Competitive Advantage in the Uruguayan and New Zealand Beef Industries AgEcon
Serra, Virginia; Woodford, Keith; Martin, Sandra.
The Uruguayan and New Zealand beef industries have developed under similar climatic conditions that favour pastoral farming. Both industries are export focused. However, the development paths taken by the two industries have been different. Porter's diamond is used as a framework for analysing the competitive strengths and weaknesses of each industry. It is concluded that the lower prices received by producers in the Uruguayan industry, linked historically to Uruguay's foot and mouth disease (FMD) status but now caused primarily by tariff issues in the North American market, have been a fundamental problem. This has led to different input-output ratios than have been experienced in New Zealand, and made investment based on intensification less attractive....

Welfare Benefits: the changing face of the Queensland beef industry. AgEcon
Rolfe, John; Donaghy, Peter.
Australian agriculture has suffered from a long-term decline in its terms of trade and a persistent cost-price squeeze. The effects on farm viability have led to declining and aging rural populations, rising rural unemployment, and substantial agricultural restructuring. To cushion these effects and assist in rural restructuring Australian State and Federal Governments have provided support to primary producers including drought aid, reconstruction aid and other support mechanisms. In Queensland the principle agency responsible for providing this support is the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority (QRAA). This paper will examine the recent pattern of support QRAA has provided the Queensland beef industry and comment on its effectiveness and flow-on effects.

NAFTA AND U.S.-MEXICAN BEEF TRADE: LONG-RUN IMPLICATIONS FOR CHANGES IN TRADE FLOWS FROM TECHNOLOGY TRANSFERS AgEcon
Melton, Bryan E.; Huffman, Wallace E..
This study examines potential long-term impacts on the U.S. and Mexican beef industries of the reduction in trade barriers under NAFTA and likely associated international technology transfers (of beef cattle, feeding methods, and meat packing) and foreign capital investments. The beef industry is represented as four subsectors: cow-calf production, post-weaning beef production, meat packing, and leather production. The analysis is accomplished through a multi-sector model of the U.S. and Mexican beef industries, estimation of key parameters, and simulation of long-run outcomes under three alternative scenarios. Our results show that Mexico will dramatically expand the size of its cow herd. The expanded supply and lower post-slaughter processing cost in...

Digital-image analysis to predict weight and yields of boneless subprimal beef cuts Scientia Agricola
Teira,Gustavo Adolfo; Tinois,Eduardo; Lotufo,Roberto de Alencar; Felício,Pedro Eduardo de.
For several decades, beef carcass evaluation for grading or research purposes has relied upon subjective visual scores, and manually taken measurements, but in recent times there has been a growing interest in new technologies capable of improving accuracy of estimates. Equations to predict weight and yield of beef pistol subprimal cuts were developed in this work using digital image analysis (VIA) of the 12th rib steak. Equations to predict total pistol subprimal cuts weight (CUTS) had coefficients of determination (CD) of 0.84, or 0.87 to 0.88, when the independent variables were the VIA parameters and the half carcass weight (HC) or the total pistol weight (TP), respectively. The predicted values for the total seven subprimal cuts, as a percentage of...
