First record of endoparasitism of Pycnogonida in Hydrozoan polyps (Cnidaria) from the Brazilian coast 49
Bettim,Ariane Lima; Haddad,Maria Angélica.
Despite the relatively high number of recent studies on Cnidaria off the Brazilian coast, we have observed only two records of parasitism on macromedusae and none on polyps. Endoparasitic associations between Pycnogonida larvae and hydroids have been well known since the early 20th century. Protonymph larvae develop inside the gastrovascular cavity of polyps, typically gastrozooids, which are then called gallzooids. This short communication is an unprecedented record of parasitism on the polyps of Brazilian cnidarian fauna. The parasitic association between Pycnogonida Anoplodactylus stictus and a new hydroid species of Podocoryna has been casually detected on the encrusting communities of experimental polyethylene plates installed at the Paranaguá Yacht...

Benthic Community zonation in a breakwater on the north coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 52
Masi,Bruno Pereira; Macedo,Isabela Maria; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
The present study presents the vertical zonation pattern of the intertidal benthic organisms on granitic boulders in the Farol de São Tomé beach (22º02'S, 41º03'W), Rio de Janeiro State. Four sampling profiles using 20 x 20 cm quadrats through a photo quadrat technique revealed four horizontal bands: (1) Littoral Fringe characterized by empty space and Littorina; (2) Upper eulittoral mainly occupied by Chthamalus and bare rock; (3) Lower eulittoral characterized by Chthamalus, Phragmatopoma, Ulva and Centroceras; and (4) Sublittoral Fringe characterized by Ulva, Phragmatopoma and Hypnea. The high variability in the relative abundance of the dominant species among the profiles may be attributed to the high topographic irregularity, reflecting in different...

Saline waters and macroinvertebrates in subtropical Andean streams 67
González Achem,Ana Lucía; Rolandi,María Laura; Fernández,Hugo Rafael.
Salinity of rivers is an expression of the concentration of salts dissolved in the water body. Secondary salinization is the increase in salinity of a water body as a result of human activity. Salinity may restrict the species composition of aquatic biota to tolerant species. In this study we analyzed benthic communities and their relationship with physicochemical variables in natural pristine systems and impacted environments. We collected benthic community samples using a D-net and water samples for laboratory major ions analysis. We noted a critical limit of electrical conductivity above 800µS/cm breaking up taxa pools of benthic macroinvertebrates. We observed that taxonomic richness is a sensitive indicator to detect effects of secondary salinization....

Distribution, persistence and change in the macrobenthos of the lagoon of Lesina (Apulia, southern Adriatic Sea) 5
Nonnis Marzano, C; Scalera Liaci, L; Fianchini, A; Gravina, F; Mercurio, M; Corriero, G.
The benthic community of the lagoon of Lesina was studied from July 2000 to June 2001. The distribution of the main macrophytobenthic species was recorded by visual census at 24 stations in July 2000. The macrofauna, from both hard and soft substrates, was analyzed at five stations with seasonal frequency; in addition, the main hydrologic parameters were recorded monthly. The lagoon was mainly characterized by brackish water, with salinity values decreasing from west to east (annual mean: 23.3 psu). It showed mild water temperatures throughout the year (annual mean: 19.8 degreesC) and moderately high values of dissolved oxygen (annual mean: 9.9 ppm). No dystrophic crises were observed during the period of study. In the eastern basin, Zostera noltii...

Trophic relationships in a deep Mediterranean cold-water coral bank (Santa Maria di Leuca, Ionian Sea) 5
Carlier, A.; Le Guilloux, E.; Olu, Karine; Sarrazin, Jozee; Mastrototaro, F.; Taviani, M.; Clavier, J..
Cold-water corals (CWC) are frequently reported from deep sites with locally accelerated currents that enhance seabed food particle supply. Moreover, zooplankton likely account for ecologically important prey items, but their contribution to CWC diet remains unquantified. We investigated the benthic food web structure of the recently discovered Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) CWC province (300 to 1100 m depth) located in the oligotrophic northern Ionian Sea. We analyzed stable isotopes (delta C-13 and delta N-15) of the main consumers (including ubiquitous CWC species) exhibiting different feeding strategies, zooplankton, suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and sedimented organic matter (SOM). Zooplankton and POM were collected 3 m above the coral...

Do natural disturbances have significant effects on sandy beach macrofauna of Southeastern Brazil? 103
Costa,Leonardo Lopes; Machado,Phillipe Mota; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
ABSTRACT The role of morphodynamic features such as grain size, swash climate and wave action on the macrofauna of beaches are well-known. However, few studies have investigated natural disturbances as potential drivers of temporal community variations. In southeastern Brazil, we sampled the intertidal macrofauna of two sandy beaches to test whether seasonal disturbances as the frequency of storm wave events (SWE) and rainfall have significant influence on their composition and abundance. The macrofauna assemblage differed significantly between the rainy and the dry seasons, but rainfall was not the main driver of community changes, although both beaches are in the vicinity of extensive river plumes. Actually, SWE explained most macrofauna richness...
