Background: Introgression of transgenes from crops to their wild species may enhance the adaptive advantage and therefore the invasiveness of and weedy forms. The study evaluated the effect of Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) genes from ABS event 188 on the vegetative and reproductive features of the F2 populations derived from crosses with Sorghum bicolor subsp. drummondii. Results: F1 populations were obtained from reciprocal crosses involving ABS event 188 and its null segregant with inbred weedy parents from S. bicolor subsp. drummondii. Effect of extrusion-cooking in total carotenoids content in cream and orange flesh sweet potato cultivars Horticultura Brasileira

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a food crop that supplies energy, minerals and vitamins C and B. Some cultivars are very rich in carotenoids (pro-vitamin A). In this study were evaluated and compared the total carotenoids content of two cultivars and the losses on the dehydrated extruded sweet potato flour. Samples from organic and conventional crops were analyzed, in the form of fresh and dehydrated extruded samples. Total carotenoids content of the fresh product, expressed on wet basis, was of 437 µg 100 g-1 for the cream cultivar and 10,12 µg 100 g-1 for the orange cultivar. Os carotenoides são pigmentos naturais responsáveis pela cor amarela, laranja ou vermelha de muitos alimentos. Alguns são precursores de vitamina A e podem ser utilizados no combate à deficiência desta vitamina. A presença de lipídeos na dieta é fundamental para a absorção dos carotenoides. Neste trabalho foi descrito o processamento para a elaboração de óleo de soja enriquecido com carotenoides provitamínicos A para aplicação em snacks de milho obtidos por extrusão, visando contribuir para o atendimento à Ingestão Diária Recomendada para vitamina A. A palmeira Syagrus coronata, licuri, nativa do sertão baiano, é importante fonte de alimento para pessoas e animais. Sua amêndoa é usada como substituta do milho para a alimentação das aves. A composição nutricional indicou que o fruto é altamente calórico. Os principais constituintes das amêndoas são lipídeos e proteínas. Na polpa, o beta-caroteno é um importante constituinte. Discute-se a utilização dos frutos como complemento vitamínico de escolares da área rural da caatinga baiana.

Mauritia vinifera (buriti) is a palm tree that grows wild in different areas of Brazil, particularly in the Amazonian region. The buriti oil is rich in carotenoids, especially in β-carotene. The growing interest in other natural sources of β-carotene has stimulated the industrial use of buriti as a raw material for pulp oil extraction. Most processes are based on the conventional technologies, involving drying and pressing the pulp for oil recovery and further separation of carotenoids in a liquid phase using organics solvents. ผลปาล์มน้ำมันเป็นแหล่งบีตา-แคโรทีนทางธรรมชาติที่สำคัญ ยังไม่มีรายงานถึงปริมาณบีตา-แคโรตีนในพันธุ์ปาล์มน้ำมันต่างๆ ที่ปลูกในประเทศไทย รวมถึงการวิเคราะห์หาปริมาณบีตา-แคโรทีนแบบรวดเร็ว วัตถุประสงค์ของงานวิจัยเพื่อวิเคราะห์ปริมาณบีตา-แคโรทีน ในผลปาล์มน้ำมันพันธุ์ต่างๆ ใน 2 พื้นที่ปลูก ได้แก่ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรีและจังหวัดทางภาคใต้ของประเทศ การวิเคราะห์แบบรวดเร็วโดยวิธีสเปกโตรสโกปีแบบ NIR เทียบกับวิธีสเปกโตรสโกปีแบบ UV-Vis ซึ่งเป็นวิธีมาตรฐานที่ใช้ในการอ้างอิง เพื่อนำมาสร้างสมการเทียบมาตรฐานหาปริมาณบีตา-แคโรทีน ในตัวอย่างผลปาล์มน้ำมันสด พบค่าเฉลี่ยปริมาณบีตา-แคโรทีนในผลปาล์มน้ำมันตั้งแต่ 1.04 – 15.42 mg/100g fw ซึ่งแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติตามพันธุ์ปาล์มน้ำมัน ค่าเฉลี่ยของบีตา-แคโรทีนในกลุ่มตัวอย่างทางใต้ของประเทศมีค่าสูงกว่าในจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี คือ 9.41 และ...
