Discrimination of bile acids by the rainbow trout olfactory system: Evidence as potential pheromone Biol. Res.
GIAQUINTO,PERCILIA C; HARA,TOSHIAKI J.
Electro-olfactogram recording was used to determine whether the olfactory epithelium of adult rainbow trout is specifically sensitive to bile acids, some of which have been hypothesized to function as pheromones. Of 38 bile acids that had been pre-screened for olfactory activity, 6 were selected. The rainbow trout-specific bile acids, taurocholic acid (TCA), and taurolithocholic acid 3-sulfate (TLS) were the most potent compounds tested. TLS had a distinctive dose-response curve. Cross-adaptation experiments demonstrated that sensitivity to bile acids is attributable to at least 3 independent classes of olfactory receptor sites. Our data suggest that bile acids are discriminated by olfaction in rainbow trout, supporting the possibility that these compounds...

Evaluation of preprandial and postprandial serum bile acids and plasma ammonia concentrations in healthy dogs, and the effects of frozen storage on plasma ammonia concentrations Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.

Preprandial and postprandial (2 and 4 hours) serum bile acids (SBA) and pre and postprandial (2 hours) plasma ammonia concentrations were evaluated. Additionally, the effects of freezing (for 24 and 48 hours at -20ºC) were observed on plasma ammonia concentrations in 22 healthy dogs. The preprandial SBA concentration was 2.1 ± 0.3 mmol/l and 7.5 ± 1.2 mmol/l and 7.8 ± 1.4 mmol/l for samples obtained 2 and 4 hours after feeding, respectively. Fasting and postprandial (2 hours) plasma ammonia concentrations were significantly different when measurement was performed within 30 minutes after blood collection (118.2 ± 13.2 mg/dl or 67.3 ± 7.5 mmol/l and 227.9 ± 59.2 mg/dl or 129.9 ± 33.7 mmol/l), but the difference between pre and postprandial concentrations...

Evaluation of preprandial and postprandial serum bile acids and plasma ammonia concentrations in healthy domestic cats and the effects of frozen storage on plasma ammonia concentrations Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.

The evaluation of hepatic diseases in cats requires many laboratorial tests, and those routinely used are less conclusive. Considering the little availability of data and controversies related to the subject, we decided to study the preprandial and postprandial serum bile acids and plasma ammonia levels, and the effects of storage on these values. Preprandial (fasting) and postprandial serum bile acid (SBA) levels of 20 adult, healthy cats were determined using the enzymatic method. The measured values were 0.5 ± 0.1 and 3.6 ± 1.0 µmol/L, respectively. The preprandial and postprandial plasma ammonia (PA) levels, obtained 30 minutes after blood collection, 157.0 ± 18.7 µg/dL or 89.5 ± 10.7 µmol/L and 295.3 ± 28.2 µg/dL or 165.2 ± 17.3 µmol/L, were...
