The weathering of petroleum was monitored by high temperature high resolution gas-liquid chromatography in northern Brittany seashore sediments, either contaminated by the Amoco Cadiz oil or experimentally polluted. Most aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were relatively rapidly degraded, but some compounds like isoprenoids (pristane and phytane), triterpanes and alkylated phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes appeared to be more recalcitrant. In high energy sites (Roscoff beach), cleaning of the sediments was achieved between 12 and 18 months, whereas the Abers muddy sediments contained after two years bacterially neosynthesised very long chain n-alkanes (>n-C50). Interaction between physical leaching and biodegradation was responsible for sediments... |

The evolution of the hydrocarbons in the marine sediments of the mediterranean coast was studied by two different but complementary methods. In the first part of this study we describe results obtained through a technique specially adapted to sediments. It leads to a relatively accurate and reproducible determination of the hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments collected at many sites of the mediterranean coast polluted or not by chronical petroleum inpout (Brusc lagoon, zones of Embiez, Fos, Carry-le-Rouet, and Etang de Berre). The hydrocarbon concentrations in the non-polluted sediments are always inferior to 300 mg/kg of dry sediment with important variations according to seasons (x 4 during winter). In the polluted sediments the hydrocarbon... |

Evolution of marine oil pollution made the study of microbial degradation a current matter of importance. The present work dealt with preliminary assays in vitro of a systematic study of petroleum degrading Bacillus species. Degradation of petrol during the different experimentations was followed with infrared analyses. Progressive elimination of alcanes and isoalcanes was controlled by gas- chromatography. Out of the 37 strains of Bacillus subtilis, B_. polymyxa, B. megaterium and Sporosar- cina tested, 10 could grow with petrol as unique source of carbon. The factors of growth as supplemented in these experiments hardly accelerated the degradation. |
