Anaerobic reactors with biofilter and different diameter-length ratios in cassava starch industry wastewater treatment REA
Kunzler,Kathia R.; Gomes,Simone D.; Piana,Pitágoras A.; Torres,Douglas G. B.; Vilas Boas,Marcio A.; Tavares,Maria H. F..
The use of anaerobic reactors with media support in the treatment of wastewater from the cassava starch industry has emerged as a viable option because it allows the application of high organic loads and a significant reduction of the HDT needed for the treatment. This research aimed at studying the process of biodigestion in two anaerobic reactors with bamboo support, in the treatment of effluent of cassava starch, by evaluating their performance. The two reactors used present the following diameter: length ratio, 1:6 and 1:3. The organic loads applied to the systems were 0.519, 1.156, 1.471, 3.049, 4.347, 4.708 and 5.601g.L-1.d-1. Regarding the efficiency of removal of COD, TS and TVS, no statistically significant differences were obtained between the...

Yield of lettuce grown in aquaponic system using different substrates AGRIAMBI
Jordan,Rodrigo A.; Geisenhoff,Luciano O.; Oliveira,Fabricio C. de; Santos,Rodrigo C.; Martins,Elton A. S..
ABSTRACT In the aquaponic system, the characteristics of the materials used as substrate directly affect plant development, because besides acting as a support base, they must present a surface to fix microorganisms, responsible for the conversion of nutrients into forms more easily available to plants. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of four growing substrates on the yield of lettuce grown in aquaponic system. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four treatments, which corresponded to the substrates, and six replicates. Plants were grown using the nutrient film technique (NFT) system. The substrates used in the experiment were: coconut shell fiber with crushed stone #3, expanded vermiculite, zeolite and phenolic...

Start-up adjustment of a plug-flow digester for cassava wastewater (manipueira) treatment Scientia Agricola
Ribas,Maria Magdalena Ferreira; Barana,Ana Cláudia.
Manipueira, wastewater of cassava (Manihot esculenta) processing, can be treated by anaerobic biodigestion. To study the start-up process of a plug-flow digester for manipueira treatment, this work consisted of two stages: gradual decrease of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) to the preset time of 4 days or maintaining a fixed HRT of 4 days with gradual increase of the substrate concentration. A digester of 1980 mL capacity was opperated, at constant temperature (32 ± 1º C), with substrate pH corrected between 5.5 and 6.0. The first stage had durations of 16.6; 13.6; 11.6; and 9.6 days and the organic loads were 3.1; 2.0; 2.3; and 2.9 COD L-1 d-1, (chemical oxigen demand) respectively. The second stage was characterized by a fixed HRT (4 days) and organic...

Energy Potential of Animal Waste in the State of Paraná (Brazil) BABT
Mancini,Fabrízio Nicolai; Milano,Jackson; Araújo,Joilson Gonçalves de; Iastrenski,Karen Techy; Silveira,Nicolli Sperança; Pertile,Rodrigo Creuz.
Abstract Animal biomass is a source of energy commonly discarded without or with low utilization, but its availability draws attention to its reuse [1]. The utilization can be carried out in different ways, varying in terms of generation time and efficiency. The use of biodigestion requires a relatively small area compared to landfills or natural composting, and it provides other materials besides biogas, that can be recycled as fertilizer and has a short residence time of residues [2]. The energy supplied as biogas can be harnessed as heat or electricity in case of conversion. Considering the energy needs of animal husbandry and the ease of reinsertion of energy in the production cycle, the possibility of distributed generation of biogas was studied as a...
