• In order to assess the sustainability of fish resources in the Natural Marine Park of Mayotte (Western Indian Ocean), indicators and monitoring protocols must be determined. • This study relied on the underwater video technique STAVIRO for assessing fish communities and resources. A pilot survey was conducted in Nov. 2014 in the south-east quarter of the Mayotte lagoon, an area encompassing the marine reserves of Longogori, M’Bouzi and the Saziley Marine Park. Out of 115 stations collected, 104 were analysed for habitat and fish, based on a list of 527 species with fishing, ecological, or emblematic interest (cf. AMBIO/A/1). • 43 indicators were computed, analysed, and for some mapped. The PAMPA computing tool was used in this purpose. • 130 fish species... |

Bringing together France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco since 1976, the RAMOGE agreement is born of an awareness of the pollution of the sea. Its aim is to raise public awareness, develop actions and make recommendations for the preservation of the marine environment. In 2015, an exploration campaign of the deep zones of the RAMOGE area made it possible to acquire new data in the Natura 2000 sites of "Corniche Varoise" and "l'Estérel", as well as on other Italian and Monegasque sectors. . The RAMOGE project "exploration of deep zones of ecological interest" is based on 3 phases. Each country is invited to become involved in the implementation of one of these phases. After Italy in 2015, which facilitated the provision of nautical resources for... |

As an introduction to the entire volume, this article outlines the relationships among the five elements of the Census of Marine Life (CoML) that create new knowledge: (1) The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), a marine component of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, links marine databases around the world to provide an Internet accessible, dynamic interface for comparing species-level, geo-referenced biodiversity data in relation to ocean habitats. The entire CoML field project data will be managed in and accessible through OBIS. (2) The History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) is a unique new synthesis of historical and biological research that will document marine biodiversity, globally, up to 500 years ago, before significant... |

This paper shows, from three perspectives, how the environmental policies in French Guiana, trying to deal with the local cultural diversity, tend to ethnicize social relations. The Guiana Amazonian Park, which seems to be a reaffirmation of the state’s presence in the southern French Guiana, experiments modes of governance which increase interethnic competition. The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization has introduced a difference between different categories of the population : some of them must be consulted whereas the others mustn’t. Finally, people from immigration are a blind-spot of these policies. Migrants do not have any facility to access... |

Central to the development of an inventory of marine life and improved conceptual understanding of the mechanisms that dynamically shape species distribution patterns is the implementation of strategies aimed at enhancing assimilation and access to existing biogeographical information. Using the Internet as a medium, the Gulf of Maine Biogeographic Information System (GMBIS) project provides a framework and a set of reusable tools for the integration, visualization, analysis and dissemination of diverse types of biogeographical and oceanographic information. End-to-end viability of this approach is demonstrated in the context of a series of scientific storylines and a pilot application for the Gulf of Maine (GoM), a well-studied ecosystem that has been... |

The effect of climate changes on marine ecosystems and the ecosystemic services identified in the framework of the World ecosystem assessment program for the millennium (MEA, 2001), is a major scientific issue. In the first place, it seems necessary to identify these changes' characteristics from a physics point of view, as well as from a specific biodiversity (e.g., species distribution areas, exotic and invasive species), populational or marine ecosystem functioning point of view (e.g., trophic chain). However, one of the main difficulties in assessing these impacts results from the superposition and the interactions between natural variability and the different anthropic effects including economic activities (e.g. fisheries). A number of doubts remain,... |

• Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It aims at assessing the status and trends of habitats and mobile macrofauna in the Voh-Kone-Pouembout lagoon, in the light of demographic and industrial developments and accounting for the existing customary reserve of Oundjo. • It relies on 280 stations collected in 2007 and 2013 using the remote unbaited underwater video STAVIRO rotating technique, which were analysed to characterize habitat, fish assemblages, turtles and sea snakes, from a list of 490 species (AMBIO/A/1). • 143 species (including one turtle species and one sea snake species), belonging to 23 families were observed. The most frequent and abundant... |

The cost of ecosystem services degradation is a major topic as underlined by the TEEB program (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity), which proposed an assessment of the costs of policy inaction in the field of biodiversity conservation. In the same vein, the report of the French Centre for Strategic Analysis on the Economic Approach to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services turns its attention to the value of ecosystem services, suggesting some elements that could help measure the cost of biodiversity degradation. There is however some confusion regarding the notion of cost. Thus, in the case of TEEB the proposed cost assessment translates into monetary terms the loss of potential profits from ecological services. Yet, another way of assessing these... |
