Effect of salinity on performance and body composition of Pacific white shrimp juveniles reared in a super-intensive system R. Bras. Zootec.
Maicá,Paula Fraga; Borba,Maude Regina de; Martins,Tatiana Germano; Wasielesky Junior,Wilson.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salinity on the culture water quality, performance and body composition of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles (1.16±0.30 g) reared for 36 days in a super-intensive system without water exchange at salinities of 4, 16 and 32‰. Groups of 200 animals (140/m2) were stocked, with three replicates, in nine fiber-cement tanks (1.11 × 1.29 × 0.70 m) with a useful volume of 400 L. Physical and chemical parameters of water, such as temperature and dissolved oxygen before and after midday, pH, alkalinity, total suspended solids, total ammonium nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate, were monitored. Performance parameters like survival, weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio and protein...

Underwater structures for periphyton in bioflocs tanks for Nile tilapia submitted to feed restriction Animal Sciences
Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e.
The objective of the present work was to assess the possible benefits of the installation of underwater structures for periphyton in bioflocs tanks for Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, submitted to feed restriction (artificial diet). The experimental treatments evaluated were: (1) BFT: bioflocs technology for aquaculture with no feed restriction; (2) BFT-30: the same as (1) but with feed restriction at 30%; (3) BP: biophyton technology for aquaculture, that is, integration between bioflocs and periphyton in the same rearing unit, with no feed restriction; (4) BP-30: the same as (3) but with feed restriction at 30%. The underwater structures for periphyton in the BP and BP-30 tanks were not able to reduce the concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate...

Partial replacement of artificial diets by wet bioflocs biomass in Nile tilapia culture tanks Animal Sciences
Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Capistrano, Hermano Hertz de Almeida; Rocha-Filho, Pedro Roberto Nogueira; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e.
The present work aimed to assess the partial replacement of artificial diets by wet bioflocs biomass in the culture of Nile tilapia juveniles. Fish were fed on different combinations of commercial dry diets (CD) and wet bioflocs biomass (BF), as it follows: 75% CD + 25% BF, 50% CD + 50% BF, and 25% CD + 75% BF, dry matter basis. There were also positive control tanks in which the fish received only commercial diet (100% CD), and three negative control tanks where the reductions of dry diets were not compensated by wet bioflocs biomass (75% CD, 50% CD, and 25% CD). Bioflocs were produced in one 500-L outdoor tank, which did not belong to the culture system, and it was called “separate BFT tank”, in which there was a daily adjustment of the C: N ratio of...

Assessment of the nitrification process in a culture of pacific white shrimp, using artificial substrate and bacterial inoculum in a biofloc technology system (BFT) Ciência Rural
Santos,Nathalia Brenda Veiga dos; Furtado,Plínio Schmidt; César,Dionéia Evangelista; Wasielesky Junior,Wilson.
ABSTRACT: Litopenaeus vannamei is the most cultured marine shrimp in all types of systems including the Bioflocs Technology System (BFT). Bioflocs are formed by microorganisms, among these, autotrophic bacteria are responsible for the nitrification process. This study aimed to identify and promote the development of nitrifying bacteria by adding artificial substrates and biofloc inoculum in L. vannamei culture in a BFT system. The experiment consisted of four treatments with three replics (4x3) as follows: (1) Control: clear water in which bioflocs were formed; (2) IN (10%): clear water with biofloc inoculum (10%); (3) IB: clear water with substrate (immature “bioballs”); and (4) MB: clear water with mature “bioballs” inoculum from a recirculation system....
