ABSTRACT Cell coverings can be observed in all major groups of organisms, which include animals, plants, fungi, protists and prokaryotes. They play a key role in assuring cell survival or adaptation to certain environmental conditions. Since the term algae refers to a polyphyletic and very artificial group, the cell coverings of these organisms are very diverse in molecular composition and with different arrangements. Differences have taxonomic value since they allow microalgae phyla or even minor taxonomic groups, such as classes, orders or families, to be distinguished. Identifying the factors driving community dynamics in hydrothermal vent communities, and in particular biological interactions, is challenged by our ability to make direct observations and the difficulty to conduct experiments in those remote ecosystems. As a result, we have very limited knowledge on species’ behaviour and interactions in these communities and how they in turn influence community dynamics. We conducted a laboratory study to determine drillhole siteselectivity patterns in the predatory behavior of Notocochlis unifasciata (Lamarck, 1822), which is a common naticid gastropod on the eastern Pacific coast of Central America, preying on two infaunal venerid bivalves – the thin-shelled and weakly ornamented Leukoma grata (Say, 1831) and the thick-shelled and strongly ornamented Iliochione subrugosa (Wood, 1828). ABSTRACT Populations show spatial-temporal fluctuations in abundance, partly due to random processes and partly due to self-regulatory processes. We evaluated the effects of various external factors on the population numerical abundance of curimba Prochilodus lineatus in the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, over a 19-year period.
